    But are they though?
There were some small dips over the last few weeks and then the numbers sky rocketed again. At what point could you say that the curve is being flattened with any degree of confidence?
Exactly. It dropped one day last week, then went absolutely nuts.

5476 deaths in Italy. That is a really really grim . I can only imagine the despair in Italy right now.

I really hope it gets absolutely no where near that level here in Ireland.

Bergamo - a population of 120k had had over 2,000 deaths alone. Imagine that in Cork. It'd be similar to 20,000 deaths in Dublin. Tragic .

Italy tends to have a much higher death rate from infectious diseases than normal.

16,000 apparently die from the flu there annually.

Hopefully they'll pass peak fatalities soon and a time difference with peak new cases established. Can that be taken as a consideration?
At some point I believe the end of March was suggested as peak for Italy.

    Italian figures yesterday
    New cases: 6557 , deaths 793

    Today 5560 and 651 deaths.

Still awful numbers but crucially lower on both counts.

Recovered is at 952 in the last 24hrs

Rate of increase in new infections is 9% - lowest since outbreak began.

Hopefully these numbers continue into tomorrow

Statistically today has been a better day for Italy. Loss of life is still horrendous, but the drop in new cases may be significant. Below 10% now. Is there a faintest hint of light at the end of the tunnel for Italy? A long long way to go.
Hopefully, metric I've been using from late Jan. is dead/recovered %, and on that metric Italy is 44.28%, down from slightly over 48% yesterday.

Usually when it gets under 50%, it's an indication of health system beginning to get on top of it.

All the usual caveats still apply,

Finding it hard to let go of simmering rage I'm feeling towards a friend who selfishly decided to go to London to see her boyfriend on Monday, 6 days ago, and has since come back to infect everyone.

People who just suit themselves and view this as a big holiday just make me sick tbh.

You needed to spend 15 minutes in the company of someone with the virus...

It’s gone from that, to stop saying “hello” to people..

    What was it all about?

I remember first hearing of the 15 minutes contact and thinking, wtf is this about?

It was all bull****e that`s what it was.

15 minutes isn't a time limit. I mean, you're not definitely safe as long you only spend 14 mins 59 secs in the company of someone.

    FFS.

I know not everyone is great with numbers and looking at graphs etc but from our base of 785 yesterday :

If we increase this by 30% a day we have 10000 cases by end of month.
If we increase by 15% a day we end up with 3000 cases.

I don't know how either figure will impact health service but I know which I'd prefer. Social distancing might keep us to 15%, big crowds will not.

If that 30% continues for an extra week the numbers rise to 60,000 by 7th April

If 15% continues for an extra week we are at 8,000 by 7th April, less cases than even end of March at the higher rate of spread and a week longer to even the workload

Come on people, slow down the spread, flatten the curve.

It might be a bit premature to make that conclusion. If the figures go down for a few days in row , then it is looking likely the lockdown measures have worked in slowing it down.

If you look at graphs for Italy, over the last few days, new cases, day by day, have been coming in below the 33% mark That would indicate that they are starting to flatten the curve.

You should really let it go. Its none of your business where your friend goes. If your that paranoid you can always de-friend them. Problem sorted.

Yeah it's one day. Not a sign of a pattern at all.

It's not one day, it's 3 days in a row that the percentage has dropped. Today is by far the biggest drop though

Console yourself that we will get through this and that you can rehearse the almighty bollocking your friend is in for after it's all over!

"Tends", "flu". WTF are you on about ?

The reason why the death rate is massive in Italy is people selfishly ignored the advice of their Health Executive because they didn't like imposition and their fantastic health care system became overwhelmed.

The surgeons now get the lovely job of not treating people over 60 years of age because a younger person needs the ventilator over them. Lovely death surrounded by no family in a non descript field hospital, gasping for air, morphined up to the gills.

From what I read it seems it's a matter of non compliance and the publican in question may have their licence revoked.

Anyway, my concern is non adherence to compliance of shutting all pubs in an effort to stop the spread of the virus.

I think we have a fair chance that this virus will not survive the Summer months. Long hours of sunshine and warmer temperatures should make an impact in killing it off.
Not certain of course just my gut.

If nothing else they will be much less colds and flu around and it will be easier to identify it

Dr.Fauci said testing would ramp up in the US massively and that it would be a good thing, so the numbers of new cases rapidly rising in the US at least shows their getting a better picture of the scale of their pandemic.
