Bullshít (to be fair) the Brits deserve special criticism for their herd immunity nonsense. They've only closed schools today

Schools will remain open for "key workers". So they haven't really closed.

Considering that over 1 million work in the NHS alone, you can imagine the number of kids that will be going to school when the "peak" hits.

What does it mean when Tony says some are hospitalised for public health reasons rather than clinical reasons?

At the beginning every one was hospitalised

What does it mean when Tony says some are hospitalised for public health reasons rather than clinical reasons?

I assumed quarantining. Initially all were quarantined upon diagnosis in hospital i think. Maybe now they do so if the person is a risk to someone at home etc. Could be really wrong though!

If you look at it in isolation (pardon the pun) rather than in the context of total number of cases.

Why are some people so determined that everything has to be bad, bad, bad.

And again he states that 15000 by the end of the month is a figure of unmitigated growth.

What does it mean when Tony says some are hospitalised for public health reasons rather than clinical reasons?

Could it be people refusing to self isolate?

At this point, I'm way more interested in the fact we jumped from 6 to 12 people in ICU. We're increasing testing numbers day by day, so I'd expecting that number to jump massively each day regardless.

I'd assume there'd always be a lag between the big jump in confirmed cases and the big jump in critical / icu patients anyway.

What does it mean when Tony says some are hospitalised for public health reasons rather than clinical reasons?

Would guess its where people maybe cant isolate at home with other vulnerable people. Not that they themselves need hospitsl treatment but to minimise risk to others. Thats just my guess though

What does it mean when Tony says some are hospitalised for public health reasons rather than clinical reasons?

For example, if cases were living with elderly parents, it would be more practical for them to self-isolate in hospital.

Since the start in Italy I calculate the rate of increase at 22% per day so I expect ours to do the same ; vital that the numbers in Italy plateau soon or the near future is bleak.

I'm relieved that the numbers aren't exploding. I was expecting somewhere in the vicinity of 400. Obviously the wider availability of testing kits will inevitably spike numbers in coming days, but I take some small measure of consolation from the 24 hour total to this evening.

Don't think you're comparing apples with aples there. Isn't the €203 our unemployment assistance whereas the 80% thing is a grant to an employer to keep someone on, rather than lay them off?

    Basically yes.

You dont "lose" your job, rather just told stay at home. Boss pays you (all/or most) wages and can claim back from the government. Some will.pay 100% of your monthly wage and claim back 80% some only pay 80% but still better than a kick in the nuts for most.

The gender imbalance is striking, anyone know why?

Dealing with small segments of the population so far, wouldn't necessarily expect it to be uniform.

What is quite stark is the gender difference in mortality rate in Italy.

15% a day is a number they would be pleased to see from the end of the month.

It was six for several days, then a belated jump, these are small numbers so we could see a jump, a plateau, a small jump then a bigger one and so on.

What does it mean when Tony says some are hospitalised for public health reasons rather than clinical reasons?
Maybe asymptomatic/minor symptoms, not individually able to self-isolate?
