My first tomato plants started to sprout yesterday from the nice sun. I should get about 200 tomatoes or more if last year is anything to go by. Eamon is right, plant seeds, the more food the better.

So I just came into my closed down school in Dublin to check something (I can do this without coming into contact with anyone) and the walls and shutters have been destroyed with graffiti overnight. Going to cost me 100's to get that cleaned up again, at a time when I can least afford to fix this.

Great to see the spirit of togetherness in our time of greatest crisis is strong....

Why are people so certain what is happening in Italy is coming our way?

From all accounts and info available during the initial stages of this virus the Italians had zero social distancing policies in place and the general public mixed and socialised the same as always.

We have closed pubs and restaurants, schools and all sporting organisations have also been closed. People from what I can see are keeping their distance when out and about and the shops for the best part are also taking responsible measure.

Ok some people are going to continue to be idiotic as always but that doesn't warrant people calling for the army to be sent in our a sudden and total lockdown of basic services.

We have taken measure to ensure this thing doesn't get beyond our control. Let's wait and see what effect these measures have on the transmission. We won't know for a few days more and I'm betting people will be pleasantly surprised .

It's the graph that people seem to point to, but that's likely to be exponential initially and look similar anyway.

They are useless in this situation. Virus is spread by droplets not skin.

If virus was on gym equipment then it's on the gloves. It's the exact same as your hands. So if he washes his hands then there's no issue.

Also, the majority of people are taking it seriously but you can't see them as they're at home.

Life is not going on as usual. Schools closed, many shops closed, pubs closed, most restaurants closed, many people working from home, thousands lost their jobs due to closures, roads empty, public transport empty, chemists, supermarkets and food outlets only open and they're trying to enforce social distancing.
Everyone I know is taking it seriously, no social engagements, no parties etc.

You're always going to get people who don't get it and they will be very visible, like the old adage, "empty vessels make the most noises" so there is no need to think that these people represent the majority.

What if you live in a 1 bed apartment with no garden? Can a couple of people survive long on windowsill produce? If only we had trained people who could work some sort of land to produce food.

Looking online, people requested tests on Saturday and are still waiting to be told a date today in Cork and similar from other people online. Seems to be a massive backlog here so could be a lot more people here then we think.

Right now, it’s more important to act as if we will be like Italy so everybody is extra vigilant. That includes telling off idiots for being idiots. This whole “stop scaring people” has to stop. There is a massive threat and people need to be alerted to be on top of this.

Sorry but non essential mental heath (I need to be out) things need to be avoided. We are such a pampered society all we have to do is stay the f**k home. You can see people in this thread justifying things they don’t need to do but want to do. Why are they waiting until the authority’s force us to do what they won’t do? We know what’s probably coming (much stricter lockdown rules), why do people think it’s grand to go about their day relatively unconcerned until this is forced on us?

And hopefully we won't need a lockdown if our social distancing measure and shutting of social outlets works.

As Dr De Gascun has said we won't know how these measure have worked for a while yet.

To early to make decision about a total lockdown which will have a savage effect on people for years to come until the data is available.
