A couple of new drug reports:

In China they're reporting success using an antiviral drug called avigan (also called favipiravir), which, in the same way as remdesivir, interferes with the enzyme that replicates the viral genome.
Patients treated were reportedly cleared of virus more quickly, and had improved lung conditions and better recovery.
News report only, no scientific papers yet as far as I can see.
Oddly, it's made by Fujifilm, whose share price is now soaring.

In Marseille doctors have been using hydroxychloroquine (anti-malarial, also for rheumatoid arthritis) and an antibiotic called azithromycin to treat patients in a non-blind trial.
Compared with patients treated in a different hospital, they report lower viral loads and faster clearance of virus, but we really need data from a proper double-blind trial to know that it's working.

Not exactly correct, once block grant is allocated from central government it's true regional assemblies have control over it.

But for example, if the Executive in the North were to decide to close the schools they would have to pay teachers salaries, and all other consequential cost from the existing block grant.

If is is a decision of central government to close then it would be funded separately from the block grant.

So Scotland & Wales don't get block grants!
I didn't know that. Slightly confused now!

    Blood groups?

People with blood type A might be more vulnerable to the coronavirus, while those with type O blood could be more resistant, (well according to a {small} preliminary study from China)
Type O patients, meanwhile, made up a smaller proportion of both those infected, and killed by the virus.

The sample group was early/small, might be more useful to obtain the latest stats from somewhere on the 200k confirmed cases that are having issues.

Not sure about Rhesus factors, only 15% of folks are 'Rh-negative'.
The Rh-negatives (according to some old folklore) are a 'bit special', but best to view that with a grain or 23, of salt.

This Type O Rh Neg diabetic with other conditions has my fingers crossed in a please let it be so selfish way.

Can you really do proper double blind during this crisis? I'd expect there would be ethical issues.

So is it 10 or 20% of cases requiring hospitalisation? A lot lot more then.

Did he go skiing in Northern Italy lately by any chance despite being advised against it? Sounds like the sort who'd do that.

Oil prices down to mid twenties a barrel. Could go below 20 dollars for the first time in decades soon. Cheaper diesel petrol and home heating at least.

The price at the pump won't change unfortunately

not kidding - it was the central part of the report.
Existing mortuary getting a pre-fab extension. The workmen literally started this morning.

where are those more detailed stats? for some people like me it whats get through to us

are the HSE still counting travel, local community or is there no point anymore with many possible sources? I'd certainly like the stats on this from the last week, they stopped giving them out on the 13th https://www.gov.ie/en/news/7e0924-latest-updates-on-covid-19-coronavirus/ to me it'd be interesting to see when it was the unknown community sources passed out travel and local sources.

local known contacts passed out travel on the 12th

HSE said in their last conference they will release detailed stats of last 7 days from Friday, which will go into a county case breakdown, as well as number of community transmitted cases, recoveed cases etc.

Makes sense. I'd imagine current mortuaries don't have a huge amount of extra space for mass increases in deaths.

How the Brits f*cked up their response to Covid 19.

The 'Herd Immunity' notion would have cost over 1/4 million deaths.

Time wasting and their late conversion to the global consensus on how to deal with Covid-19, means that they are now probably too late to stop an unmitigated disaster.
At the time, scientists advising ministers appeared to believe it could be treated like influenza, and that a “controlled epidemic” would generate “herd immunity” that would help protect the most vulnerable against the infection. The scenario called for upwards of 60% of the population to contract the virus.

The government’s strategy changed dramatically on Monday when the prime minister announced that new modelling from Imperial College London demonstrated that more draconian measures were needed to slash the estimated death toll from 260,000 to about 20,000.

The numbers are going to start stacking up in hospital a couple weeks from now. If anything we need to enforce isolation and social distancing more going forward. Its going to take at least 3 months of this to get the numbers under control.

Anyone get the feeling that the government are loving this crisis. Never saw the likes of Harris and Donohoe so animated, they are almost giddy.

No fan of Leo and crew but do you seriously believe anyone is taking delight in this crisis when the results will be the death of many of our citizens and a severally damaged economy.

When Vallance came out with the herd mentality idea, he was almost universally lauded by the UK media as a genius. Turns out he was nothing of the sort.

London is turning into one hell of a hotspot.
    621 cases there alone.

Photos of people packed on the Tube in today's newspapers online. Frightening stuff. ( tube should have been shut down a week ago..)

Really? “Surreal” is the appropriate word? Given that 1,080 people died every single day in Iran in 2019?

I know its a question that nobody can answer for certain, but, any thoughts and when the Government might extend the 29th March deadline?? I think we can safely say theyre not going to lift the ban on that date.....Just wondering do people think they'll give some notice or will they leave it like the initial announcement?
