    Just a practical question.
So how are those people supposed to reach their homes? Take the 747 and be crammed in to a bus for an hour? Take a taxi and afterwards advise the driver to self isolate?
Will be at least given masks?

    Don’t know.
You get home as quick and as straight as possible.
No heading into town to wander around. Bite to eat in a few different restaurants.

Pity this virus isn’t like everything else that comes out of China.

Works for a week then falls apart.

I think this absolute ignorance of China is a large part of why we were so unprepared in Europe. China has been the primary high end global manufacturing center for well over a decade.

Wife just back from a trip down town. A lot of oldies wandering the streets and shops, just generally pottering around.

The most at-risk groups are not taking the self-isolation thing seriously.

Some of our elders are scared or dont know whats going on. Try and be a little bit sympathetic to the ones who actually dont realise (for whatever reason) how serious this is.

I brought my mum supplies 2 weeks ago, gave her money to stock up on fuel until the summer and have been preparing her emotionally for this. Alot of people havent had a warning and the panic buying today and yesterday is a manifestation of this. I would hope come monday or tuesday this will calm down and people will realise the world is not ending, its just changing and we just need to adapt.

But seriously, people need to try and show a little compassion, especially to our older or vulnerable. This is the biggest event in practically everybodys life and has the potential to change us all over the coming months.

Should be the same for people coming back from Cheltenham.

Serious question, how do you think that this could be done in reality?

People will be coming from different airports, at different times and on different days.

    It would be impossible.

I know someone working in an electrical goods shop. She said they were out the door yesterday with people buying freezers. If you are the kind of tart to buy another fcuking freezer to squeeze all your goodies into so there’s none left for people who need it, you’re a wojus arsehole of the highest order.

Give us a shout when it's ok to buy one! Thanks hun.

I'd expect the mortality rate to pan out at around the 1% mark over time - similar to the normal flu.

Fun Fact: Around 1% of the population die ever year.

This would be in addition to that existing rate.

doesnt necessarily mean that coronaviruses have increase that much, could just be loads of anxious people calling the ambulance because they think they have it

Yeah, but that's nuts. Are people really so irrational? 5pc increase in ambulance service is pretty big.

Local Aldi store delayed opening by 1 hour to give the staff a break, store manger walking down the queue explaining that there is plenty of stock no need to bulk buy and just chill out, it seemed to work, no mad dash, everyone seemed to be buying everyday essentials. It was busy but nothing crazy.

(Store originally due to open at 9 hence the queue)

I've been thinking about the numbers on that approach. Herd immunity is normally considered to be 70%, but lets take the UK number of 60% population infected. That would mean 3.6 million people will need to get it. At a (conservative given Italy's numbers) 5% ICU rate, that would mean around 1.8 million requiring ICU. Lets assume they need ICU treatment for a week. UK has 4000 ICU and High Dependency beds. Lets assume they somehow manage to double that to 8000 by taking over operating theatres (although they wouldn't have the specialist nurses to actually run those beds properly). So we have 1.8 million needing ICU for a week and 8000 beds available. The infection rate would have to be spread over 4.5 years for that to work! If the ICU patients actually need longer than a week then that goes up. I can't see this being a viable approach. I think we are probably right to try and stop it in its tracks and figure out how to deal with it over the summer - and we will have to figure it out cos it will be back with a vengeance once the restrictions are relaxed, something China will find out in the next few months.

You might want to go back and check your numbers

The situation in the US is just insane, theres evidence of nationwide community transmission and still no ramping up in testing and no sick leave for those with symptoms so people with coronavirus are being forced to go out and interact with the public just to make ends meet. Europe might escape this because of all the recent lock downs but the US is going to be so so much worse than China, in fact the 'worst case scenario' figures we have been discussing in Europe recently look like the inevitable figures for the US epidemic.

i did this simple exponet on Tuesday. Not totally accurate but gives a general idea.

By the middle of next week the US will pass Iran in terms of recorded cases.

Please don't make this the last thread on Coronavirus.
After a heartfelt plea we will reconsider the decision to make this the last thread on the topic, or maybe just make the next few, like this one, about CoVid-19

BTW if I post in an unboldsome way and end with a smiley it's probably not worth taking my comments too seriously:)

Now back to work you lot - it's not a holiday camp!!:p

They should station soldiers on the doors and anyone who shouldn’t be there should be ”forced” out.

Too many SF voting “types” using A&E as a “GP service” for far too long.

Also, any ”intoxicated” people should be refused entry, point blank.

Poor Emmet has been ''struck down'' with inverted comma-19

If it goes to anything above 10% infected this will be a generational event. The complete failure of our health system in that case will shake our society to its core. Nothing will be the same again.

Good to see our Northern comrades putting pressure on UK to follow suit. I really hope they unilaterally just do it and take their own steps.

It's funny to see the other side taking mock offence at the "Dublin Government" closing schools etc with notifying them but then saying that they would have sided with the "London Government's" advice anyway..

As with everything up North - it not what's being said, it's who's saying it that matters.

Not going to mention them like that

However I have stated for a number of years that I don't mind the middle one winning the EPL so long as it's not in my lifetime. I was getting seriously concerned for my own health before this all blew up. However today's announcement they will postpone the finish of this season's EPL until the first gap in the Global soccer candle, being sometime in the year 2075, makes me feel a whole lot better.....

    :pac:

Thats not very helpful! I may have made a mistake, I know another analysis was talking about 100 years but I figured that was just overestimating how long the ICU beds would be needed for. Can you tell me were the mistake in the numbers is?

Fun Fact: Around 1% of the population die ever year.

If this were true for Italy, for example then with their 1,200 dead, then their number of cases will have to go from 15k known to 120k, with no further deaths. It might happen (it might already be the case as many don't know they are infected) , but I think the true death rate is higher than 1%

Also the normal death rate assumes everyone can be treated, if they can't due to resources (which is already the case) it will be much higher.

this type of hysteria is ridiculous.

Getting married, birth of my kids, first car, first kiss, first ****, first job, first time I went to Anfield, first time I touched a real boob.

That's just off the top of my head. Way bigger events.

People need to take a break from the echo-chamber of social media and go for a walk if you're going around thinking the the way you are.
