The Government is to introduce emergency legislation in the Dáil to amend the rules on sick pay, which will see Illness Benefit rise from €203 per week to €305.

It will be available from the first day of illness rather than after six days as at present, and conditionality will be waived to allow the self employed to receive it.

There will be no minimum number of PRSI contributions, but medical certification will be required.

The Taoiseach said the objective was to ensure that workers would not be afraid to self-isolate on financial grounds.

That's brilliant. Well done to them. Will really make a difference to people.

I am in a lucky position that I can and will pay my staff if they need to take a couple of weeks off due to sickness. Believe me I am a very fair, kind and good employer. I can go to bed every night knowing I have done my best for both myself and my staff. My issue is not with that. My issue is with the panic this is causing amongst the public through misinformation by people who don't really know what is happening.

I really hope you are right.

If we do not try and contain this then the economic impact may be much larger in the long run. Not even mentioning the human costs.

I agree with you. You are missing my point.

It feels so weird to see them do something proactive.

    1% is far from reality
Today the rate is at 6.79% and no longer trending down
It means that an infected patient has 6.79% chances to die

My reality would rely more on South Korea statistics , where they are doing more testing than anyone - the death rate ther is 53 out of 7,500 infected - that is not 6.79% scarmongering figure you are suggesting.

How is a person suppose to recieve a medical cert if they don't get tested? or can't visit a gp/hospital because they might have it.

How is Germany managing to have no deaths with 1151 cases?!
I would hazzard a guess that its because it seems that most of those with the virus are returnees from holiday to italy over the recent mid term break, so are kids and young-ish adults . Only 0.2 % of people with the virus under 60 have died, so if thats who is getting it, you have few deaths if its families with kids who have the virus.

in Italy the virus is spreading among the normal population so hitting a higher percentage of old people, I would assume

GPs can issue certs electronically now, not sure they are all set up to do it though

In fairness in here there a lot of posters who have been sticking in data and facts, and I think if you were to look at some of the data presented together you'd see the same hockey stick in country after country. We now have enough datapoints to see a predictable fashion in which the virus will spread if it is not contained, and people being aware enough to change behavior will drive that containment or spread.

Needs to be brought in here too.

I actually need to bring one of my children to a GP, its non-urgent, but Im wondering whether to go now or hold off.

I went to the GP today was reluctant as I have two lung disorders (both under control) before I left I heard a Dr on the radio saying that if you have already got a respiratory illness you should ring your GP before just showing up - So I did, to see if there were any extra steps I needed to take - they weren't making any exceptions at all unless you suspected you had Covid - just wash hands etc. My GP asked me why I was wearing gloves - I felt like a bit of an eegit - the only thing I'm glad I got it over with and I hope I don't need to visit again for a while so if I were you I'd go now rather than wait in case it becomes more widespread.

You have my sympathy. There is way too much panic, hysteria and misinformation at the moment. People are talking as if it as an accepted fact that tens of millions of people will be wiped out by the virus (when the global total so far is under 4000 fatalities).

Would VideoDoc or something similar be any good to you?

Thanks for suggesting. I’d prefer to see our own gp but possibly could do consultation over phone.

It will be fascinating to see studies done at the end of this with those very clear graphs run out for different countries, noting the steps they took and at what point, for the result they garnered. Put to bed for example the hypothetical studies about whether or not more democratic or more autocratic governments do better in these situations (and I'm including S Korea and Singapore on the more autocratic side, when it comes to this sort of thing)

It will be hugely important and have social consequences.

As a business owner and an employer in this country I have to say I have never ever come across so much misinformation as I have over the last few days whilst reading through this tread.

Plenty of people spreading panic and it's terrible to see. As of today we have had two big things cancelled this week that will ultimately lose us a huge amount of revenue. Its really worrying times for the majority of business owners I can garuntee that. Its OK when you are sitting at home still getting paid by your employer laughing and smiling at the rumours being spread around the table about how many people COULD die.

Please stop spreading idle talk about what might happen because you will regret it when your employer turns around in a month's time and says "sorry I have to reduce your wages or let you go" when all this could have had minimal impact.

    dan 786 (the posters name) just posted this;

    It might help...

That figure can't be applied to an individual without adjusting for all other factors.

It does *not* mean that Ms Smith, who just tested positive, will be assigned a 6.79pc chance of dying. Or any other estimate of cfr either.

    That's why it's called average

Well if the Irish authorities had placed those people on the plane in quarentine ir acted like a reaponsible grown up government like many others around the world.

What are all these many governments that placed plane loads of people in quarantine?

you are counting unresolved cases in your stat, that figure inst indication of anything
Korea only has 166 resolved, the vast majority of cases are still open to an outcome

Simon Coveney right now on Newstalk announcing IB going up from €203 to €305 also waiving the 6 days disqualification, if you have a GPs cert that you should self isolate, also available to the self employed....but he was a bit confused about that bit...
