Not many are on social media, so they don't have social media scare disease - which is far worse than covid 19.

My mother is 89, she couldn't give a rats arse about it at present and will be at bridge 3 times this week.

She will take normal precautions, but aside from that her life will continue as normal and she'll go out shopping and meeting people.

She's not on facebook, or twitter and she doesn't read tabloids. So currently she's safe from scaremongeringitus

i also have an elderly mother. she's curtailing her activities for the moment.

Well in the spread of a virus, everyone needs to wash their hands to keep those at risk away from contact.

That is true. But I have no doubt some people have bought enough hand sanitiser and toilet paper to last them until 2025, and left others in the lurch.

    Such is life.
Not saying it's right. But let's all be realistic, people don't give a bollocks. Gimme gimme gimme.

The Italians aren't covering themselves in glory here.
To be fair, that’s a very central location in Milan that would normally be packed with people.
And the lockdown in Italy is not as it was in China with people being quarantined at home.

As a business owner and an employer in this country I have to say I have never ever come across so much misinformation as I have over the last few days whilst reading through this tread.

Plenty of people spreading panic and it's terrible to see. As of today we have had two big things cancelled this week that will ultimately lose us a huge amount of revenue. Its really worrying times for the majority of business owners I can garuntee that. Its OK when you are sitting at home still getting paid by your employer laughing and smiling at the rumours being spread around the table about how many people COULD die.

Please stop spreading idle talk about what might happen because you will regret it when your employer turns around in a month's time and says "sorry I have to reduce your wages or let you go" when all this could have had minimal impact.

Yes, there are, I was speaking to a colleague who has a friend in her whatsapp group who apparently bought liters of the stuff from different sources last week and was showing off pictures of it, for a big "Ha ha Janine (or whatever her name is...) what are you going to do with THAT MUCH?!"

Same parents risk sending their kids to school and creche with all sorts of illnesses so their days won't be interrupted. Go figure.

another measure to dampen the spread in Germany has just been announced.

Anyone with cold or flu like symptoms can get a 7 day sick note from their doctor over the phone, the employee on full pay and their employer getting reemboursed the wages from medical insurance(source here )
This both avoids needing them to go to a doctors surgery and needlessly infect others, takes them out of the work environment possibly infecting others and also lets them recover from an early stage, hopefully to full health.

Compare this to the US where low paid workers have no come back and inevitably will go to work and spread it to other members of staff and customers, I have more hope that the virus will spread less quickly in Germany than in the US .

Why do you reckon the Chinese government shut down their economy and started welding people into apartments over a minimal impact?

We don't like the word "maybe" around here.

Try "definitely", it's easy get away with it.

It was a freak event. The virus got every lucky break imaginable, coming at the end of a four year world war and with millions of troops carrying the flu being dispersed across the globe.

That lucky break is as nothing compared to Covid-19 coming along when air transport sees a million people in the air, globetrotting, 24/7 365. Talk about mother of all vectors!

People are dying. A fellow EU member state has locked down 11 million people and their ICU units are overwhelmed.
You seem to be implying that mis-information is the cause of cancellations.
    We can't speak to that.
But I haven't seen anyone laughing or smiling at the projections featured in the national press.

Classes can't be done online with ease. Where do you get this notion from?

Aside from primary schools, a lot of secondary have actually been testing with google hangouts and video calls and having multiple meetings to teach online video streaming and videos to be put on google classroom, so secondary for the most part is actually very well under control.

My school finally had soap today too! :D

It seems a bit crazy that Northern Ireland isn’t cancelling Patrick’s Day parades yet. It’s not like virus will stop at the non border and have its passport checked.
