As a business owner and an employer in this country I have to say I have never ever come across so much misinformation as I have over the last few days whilst reading through this tread.

Plenty of people spreading panic and it's terrible to see. As of today we have had two big things cancelled this week that will ultimately lose us a huge amount of revenue. Its really worrying times for the majority of business owners I can garuntee that. Its OK when you are sitting at home still getting paid by your employer laughing and smiling at the rumours being spread around the table about how many people COULD die.

Please stop spreading idle talk about what might happen because you will regret it when your employer turns around in a month's time and says "sorry I have to reduce your wages or let you go" when all this could have had minimal impact.

We’ll all just shut up, head dutifully to work and keep making you money so. Sorry for getting uppity boss.

It seems a bit crazy that Northern Ireland isn’t cancelling Patrick’s Day parades yet. It’s not like virus will stop at the non border and have its passport checked.

They are nowhere as big as in ROI. I would not be surprised in they follow/cancel them.

Head of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (which runs the airports like JFK) has tested positive for the virus. 142 cases total in New York so far.

When high profile people are getting it, you have to wonder about the overall spread (ala Iran when they said they had barely any cases but MPs and Ministers were getting it).

They should tell the rest of the world !

I imagine that it may be due to the fact that they have enough Critical Care beds and perhaps the use of ECMO (heart lung machines)

another measure to dampen the spread in Germany has just been announced.

Anyone with cold or flu like symptoms can get a 7 day sick note from their doctor over the phone, the employee on full pay and their employer getting reemboursed the wages from medical insurance(source here )
This both avoids needing them to go to a doctors surgery and needlessly infect others, takes them out of the work environment possibly infecting others and also lets them recover from an early stage, hopefully to full health.

Compare this to the US where low paid workers have no come back and inevitably will go to work and spread it to other members of staff and customers, I have more hope that the virus will spread less quickly in Germany than in the US .

I have cold symptoms and took today off but have no choice but to go back in tomorrow. Would be great to have something similar here, employer could claim of their PRSI contributions

Are you for real? One way or another your business will be affected by this. Either by staff not coming in due to illness or a drop in whatever service your business provides.

If any of your staff may have this illnes then the socially acceptable thing is to cover when they are out. This is an exceptional circumstance.

If we do not try and contain this then the economic impact may be much larger in the long run. Not even mentioning the human costs.

At a 1% mortality rate, 1000 deaths means an outbreak of 100,000

How do you think the gov are going to contain an outbreak of that size?

    1% is far from reality
Today the rate is at 6.79% and no longer trending down
It means that an infected patient has 6.79% chances to die

Excellent post. Complete scaremongering and figures picked from the sky throughout this thread.

The government is doing exactly what’s required so far.
Italy’s aged population has caused elevated death rates among terminally ill/end of life patients.

We need a measured response to do all to prevent the spread of this while ensuring business are protected best as possible.

Looking like tourism and hospitality are going to struggle this year.

    Thats not really fair.

People are dissing consideration of business and the economy -forgetting there was a pretty large death toll in wake of the recession too :(

He is lashing out and shooting the messenger in blaming people discussing the situation.

There are extremes here on both sides but most people are fairly balanced and are not overhyping the situation. We are looking at whats happening in Italy as an example of the what could be our reality in a couple of weeks. That is being realistic not spreading fear.

    Say what?

Inclusive of all cases the CFR is 5.79%.

Also the IFR is different and a lot lower.

Great idea Irish life do a digital doctor thing for free if you are a member, they schedule it via phone or video chat then fax prescription to chemist for you to pick up

The Government is to introduce emergency legislation in the Dáil to amend the rules on sick pay, which will see Illness Benefit rise from €203 per week to €305.

It will be available from the first day of illness rather than after six days as at present, and conditionality will be waived to allow the self employed to receive it.

There will be no minimum number of PRSI contributions, but medical certification will be required.

The Taoiseach said the objective was to ensure that workers would not be afraid to self-isolate on financial grounds.

I am in a lucky position that I can and will pay my staff if they need to take a couple of weeks off due to sickness. Believe me I am a very fair, kind and good employer. I can go to bed every night knowing I have done my best for both myself and my staff. My issue is not with that. My issue is with the panic this is causing amongst the public through misinformation by people who don't really know what is happening.

That figure can't be applied to an individual without adjusting for all other factors.

It does *not* mean that Ms Smith, who just tested positive, will be assigned a 6.79pc chance of dying. Or any other estimate of cfr either.

Well if the Irish authorities had placed those people on the plane in quarentine ir acted like a reaponsible grown up government like many others around the world did we would not have have the situation we have now with 200 St Patricks Day parades and the big one in Dublin cancelled.
