I see Slovakia is having all people returning from certain countries quarantined for 14 days.

Are we doing anything like this here?

Nope. Its been left to private businesses to decide this.

Here is the HSE advice page.

    https://www2.hse.ie/conditions/coronavirus/advice-for-people-returning-from-affected-areas.html

    Hong Kong
    Singapore
    South Korea
    Iran
    Japan
the following regions in Italy - Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna or Piedmont
Tenerife is not an affected area. Read more if you have been to the H10 Costa Adeje Hotel in Tenerife or been to Tenerife and are concerned.
What you need to do depends on if you are:
    not feeling well
    feeling well
If you are not feeling well
If you have been to one of the places listed above and you are not feeling well, check if you have symptoms of coronavirus. These are a cough, shortness of breath, breathing difficulties, fever (high temperature).
If you do have symptoms of coronavirus, phone your GP or local emergency department (ED) without delay.
Do not go to your GP or ED. Phone them first. Tell them about your symptoms. Give them the details about your situation. Avoid contact with other people by self-isolating. If you do not have a GP, phone 112 or 999.
    If you are feeling well
If you are feeling well, carry on with your normal routine.
Follow the advice on how to protect yourself and others from coronavirus and other infections such as flu.
Avoid spending time with people who are ill with a cough, high temperature, or breathing problems.
If you develop symptoms of coronavirus:
avoid contact with people by self-isolating
phone your GP or emergency department
tell them your symptoms and the details of your situation

They are still advising that if you return from one of the infection hotspots and you feel ok, you can continue your normal routine.

The US, as of about 4 years ago, had spent 4 or 5 hundred million on anti terrorism measures per head of the of 9/11 fatalities.

I can't help but wonder if it wouldn't have been better spent on cancer research.

The military-industrial complex, the oil companies and friends of Dick Cheney would not agree. Apart from that, yes it would.

I guess we'll see somewhere in the region of 50% infected this year, and about 20,000 deaths.
And I think in the long run, most if not all of us will get it.

Fair enough. I respect your opinion even I think you are way off. We'll see I guess.

Unlike the uk who are advising to stay at home for 14 days. Our government should be advising the same.

In 1918 there was the Spanish Flu pandemic.
Estimates vary as to the total number who died.
An estimate from 1991 says it killed 25–39 million people.

My lack of self reflection and my own self absorption is how you survived 2008?!!!

To be fair your response is the equivalent of bringing a shotgun to a water pistol fight.

Self absorbed and putting myself in other peoples shoes is exactly what you need to do as well.

You have insinuated I will be fine or somehow protected from this economic downturn when you are not in a position to do so. I am worried about my business/family but I can be equally worried about others.

You are the one brining a shotgun to a water fight by suggesting the end of the world stuff economically, not me. The economy and markets have always recovered from crisis, I dont see any decision countries make during this pandemic making much of an alteration to this cycle. South Korea seem to be handling this well, why do you feel any decisions made are going to cripple the country ?

Is this thing overhyped. In Germany here in the subway. Business as usual.
For many it is, but the updates need to keep coming if countries are required to move to a different phase.

I think I read that if it was a matter of the corona virus simply exasperating a pre existing condition, then they were not counting it as a corona virus death.

I don't really get this trolley thing.

You can't put Covid patients on trolleys in A&E. You can't put them in A&E full stop. They will infect all around them if you did.

Just look at some of the images in China. People wheeled into isolation centres while on trolleys in something akin to that used on premature babies.

We're not really prepared, lets be honest.

One MAJOR positive overlooked is that the drunks etc and people who should not be in A&E in the first place will be told to leave plus those same people will think twice about going anyway.

By the looks of the drop in numbers on trolleys, there's a lot of folks who have decided they can ride out whatever at home.
