So most people who contract this prick of a virus get mild symptoms. Can someone tell me what the definition of mild is here?

Something like Flu or walking pneumonia but without complications needing hospitalization.

Surely we're now at the "inkling" of an outbreak now with 19 cases out of a population of 4 million?

So full steam ahead with total lockdown in Ireland for the next 3-4 weeks? Close all shops and businesses tomorrow, ground all flights, stop all schools and colleges, no cars/buses/trains, no GAA training, no public gatherings, everyone stay in their houses in order to make sure we don't spread it to other countries?

Because that's what you're suggesting Italy should have done but when it comes home you can see exactly how unpalatable it actually is.

Exactly, i fail to see what Italian were expected to do other than trying to contain the best they could a huge outbreak that was undetected
We are not doing anything here at all, we still think there are 18 cases due to Italians but we still have people coughing and sneezing on the bus, offices, pub

    Yes we should,
All shops and businesses should have spray disinfectant at the doors.
Till operators should have hand gel and gloves.
Flights from affected areas should be stopped (Including UK if necessary),

All schools and colleges same as shops, buses and trains,

no GAA training or other sports traiining,

    no public gatherings,

Stay in your house as much as possible in order to make sure we don't spread it to others.

They had two Chinese tourists confirmed that day.

We should have banned flights from Italy last week so. Just look how crazy the whole situation is now.

Outbreak (in my mind) involves mass transfer. Most of our cases don't involve that, and so far (based on the numbers we have) it's being contained. I don't think you should be comparing Italian and Irish numbers. We're at VERY different stages.

And that's all it is, is time. We're not containing $hit. Because truth be told, we couldn't even if we wanted too. This will just have to rip through us and burn itself out and we can be thankful it's only going to kill mostly the old and compromised.

I don't think there's anything special about recovered cases. Realistically any recovered cases probably had flu symptoms. Not something to really write about, to be fair.

You never had influenza have you?

Does anyone believe the figures declared all over?

I'm on the fence on this. Hopefully they are true.

I'd take even the Italian figures with a pinch of salt - they said tonight that the sudden increase of 1200 odd was due to the fact that figures from a certain area had not been previously taken into account: it's not that they weren't there, it's just that they hadn't been added to the rest. I call that doctoring the numbers.

Just wondered how many from here go to Cheltenham races. A lot I would think, but UK has allowed it to go ahead just the same.

Crufts similar. We are not alone in the economic argument are we?

    Mammon rules.

Cheltenham being allowed go ahead is madness also. Fully expect there to be some sort of fallout from it. Just imagine all the drunken degenerates not looking after hygiene and the huge volumes of cash being handled all over.

We should lead not follow sometimes.

But the Irish people who were in Italy at the time would still have made it home. And would still have been carrying it.

I think it was one more case here in ROI.

Hopefully that won't change much. Ever the optimist me. ;)

A lot of people here are still flying out to Italy and the rest of Europe, what do we do with them?

Isnt it time that we had a 24/7 hospital service. A service where all departments work shifts. Exray, bloods, labs, theatres etc. Then maybe we could deal with backlogs, trolleys etc.

In situations as we now have labs would be working around the clock so many more people could be tested and either registered and monitored or cleared.

Um radiography and laboratory services are available at night and weekends.

I think I, and we, might be going about this all wrong.

In six weeks - 2 months, there’ll be a worldwide shortage of masks, ventilators, hospital beds, paracetamol, anti viral medication etc. And I’d say it’ll be worse here than other countries, as you can be damn sure the HSE have no stockpiles. No way production can be ramped up in time, most of it is made in China.

We would, in fact, be better off spiking early. And as an individual, I’d be better off getting it next week than in ten weeks. Of course I might not catch it all, and if I did, I probably won’t need hospitalisation. But why wait to find out?

So I’m stopping this hand washing lark and am rubbing my eyes every chance I get.

No elderly relatives in your family? Sick comment to make.

All of ours came from Italy. They didn't drive and they didn't get a boat.

I’m not sure what people are struggling to grasp. Everybody is trying to slow down the disease, this isn’t rocket science.

The recommendations is to keep your distance, up to 2 metres they say, not easy to do on plane. Not to be in big gatherings, not easy to manage in airports, stadiums, major sport events or parades.

So basically it’s super serious unless money will be lost. If the entire financial system can’t handle a natural event , maybe we need to rethink this system when this passes. Money is being prioritised over lives.

The health of our elders, our vulnerable and our healthcare workers are not as important as keeping finance ticking over. They are not doing what can be done to give these people the best chance to get through this. Not just that, what happened in Italy is coming our way and we still fumble about what to do. Well Italy is our future.... Nobody in this country can call Americans stupid ever again.

Meetings with key stakeholders have been taking place for weeks now by the HSE to ensure procurement of adequate supplies of vital materials and medicines. Do you research anything or just form opinions out of thin air?

The death toll in Italy has passed 230, with officials reporting more than 50 deaths in 24 hours. The number of confirmed cases jumped by more than 1,200 to 5,883 on Saturday

A lot of people are ignoring the fact that the Italian government, the Irish government and many others have prioritised the economic benefits of the airline industry over stopping the spread. We would have zero cases if flights to/from Italy were cancelled earlier. It's not speculation, it's a fact.
