Yeah but I thought I read they had something like 1000 cases, we've got what? 19?

So we're doing even better then, not only have we no mortality rate but have contained it for the most part and only have 19 cases, even better than Germany.

I think that may be a fair point. Many of the arguments against restricting air travel are from the POV of other places restricted flights from hot-spots. Some of them, eg people will travel anyway, would not apply in this case. How many of the ski-trips would have gone ahead for example?

I suspect they'd have been afraid of the economic impact. Whereas now when there's feck all coming or going (based on anecdotal reports of near empty planes) that ship has sailed.
Yeah very true. Unfortunately money is coming before lives in many places.

They banned flights from China on 31 January. Their case numbers only ballooned on 21 February.

They banned flights from China before any proper diagnosis was made?

Should we close all shops and businesses tomorrow, ground all flights, stop all schools and colleges, no cars/buses/trains, no GAA training, no public gatherings, everyone stay in their houses in order to make sure we don't spread it to other countries?

Wait, maybe that's ridiculously excessive. So if you're suggesting that Italy should have done that then 4 weeks ago, surely you expect us to do that now?

The thing is it was just as crazy a decision for the chinese as it is for us to contemplate. They had all the same worries and problems. I'm not saying it's the right thing for the west but it puts the Chinese actions in perspective.

I'm on about flights to/from Italy. If they had locked down the region completely and closed Milan airport, we (and many other European regions) would have no cases.

Looking at how the virus spread across Europe I think it's delusional to believe that banning flights from one country 2 weeks ago would stop this. Look how fast it's moving everywhere in the world right now. Did they all get it from Italy?

How do we not have enough test kits... South Korea has tested huge amounts of people. Are they making their own kits? Would it not be useful to start testing everyone with flu like symptoms here rather than rely on contact tracing. I imagine that’d throw up a few random cases

It seems the obvious thing to do but the HSE are a cluster **** of an organisation.

It is highly likely though that there are very few test kits. If the US are short we definitely are

All of ours came from Italy. They didn't drive and they didn't get a boat.

They had two Chinese tourists confirmed that day.

Same reason we have no mortality rate. Surely we are doing something right?

The first death usually happens 30 days after the first diagnosis.
If there's still nobody dead in 3 weeks we can start congratulating ourselves.

I said 'at the inkling of an outbreak'. We're not even close to an outbreak. 95% of our cases came from Italy. Their numbers ballooned on the 21st of February, and they didn't react.

Surely we're now at the "inkling" of an outbreak now with 19 cases out of a population of 4 million?

So full steam ahead with total lockdown in Ireland for the next 3-4 weeks? Close all shops and businesses tomorrow, ground all flights, stop all schools and colleges, no cars/buses/trains, no GAA training, no public gatherings, everyone stay in their houses in order to make sure we don't spread it to other countries?

Because that's what you're suggesting Italy should have done but when it comes home you can see exactly how unpalatable it actually is.

All departments do run 24/7. It's not like they close up shop at 5 and say listen lads handle the rest your selves.

They don't. Acute assessment units for example are Monday to Friday, so cases at the weekend or late Friday ends up in ED

Outbreak (in my mind) involves mass transfer. Most of our cases don't involve that, and so far (based on the numbers we have) it's being contained. I don't think you should be comparing Italian and Irish numbers. We're at VERY different stages.

I'm on the fence on this. Hopefully they are true.

So most people who contract this prick of a virus get mild symptoms. Can someone tell me what the definition of mild is here?

Confirmed. It's a draft decree, but it does read "no changes" (i.e. no changes to be made to its contents).

But they don't close and even if they didn't, in the context of SARS-CoV-2 - Having every member of staff at work won't speed up the trajectory of illness or result in quicker discharge.

True. The illness will run its course, but having full 24/7 hospital services as exist elsewhere, would allow for quicker throughput of patients, fuller testing, and would allow for smoother running of health service in general.

There was an interesting report on Sky News yesterday saying even total lockdown of a country might not have the desired effect : you could dramatically reduce the cases alright but the virus could simply rebound in the autumn / winter instead.

Overall they were positive though, saying such viruses tend to come in peaks and troughs and follow a similar pattern.

An advisory should be from the HSE and not the golf club, even though it has an apparent HSE logo.

There might be timing issues, EG our today were based on the picture at 2pm, but broadly I would trust the figures in any western country for what they say they are. The likelihood of it being leaked if the declared figures were wrong is high.
