Maybe it would be a good thing for healthy people (in isolation) to contract Covid-19, so that our antibodies become acquainted with it, therefore the next time it arrives our immune systems will recognise & destroy it?

Maybe its a terrible idea too? The kind that might leave you sterilised, if male, or with permanently reduced lung capacity, lifelong kidney issues or even in some cases death. Apart from that sounds great. Highly recommended roller coaster ride.

Do we have any information on whether or not the virus is less likely to last on outdoor surfaces than indoor surfaces? I'm kind of assuming that between wind, rain, ice, direct sunlight, etc that the virus would last for less time outside than indoors? I'm just thinking in terms of leisure activities it might be safer to do things outdoors rather than indoors? Would an outdoor playground be likely to be 'cleaner' than a soft play area? Would outdoor gym equipment be 'cleaner' than equipment in a gym? Would an outdoor skatepark be cleaner than an indoor one? Etc?

First big spike outside the main areas....

Certainly hope it is a big spike and not a little spike.

Again traveled to Italy. I don't know about you guys but I believe there's a pattern developing.

South Africa has a huge AIDS problem. Over 30% in some regions. It'll knock a chunk out of their population

Stupid question here but what is the point of hand washing? You have the virus on your hands so you go to wash your hands, you touch the tap to turn it on, the virus is now on the tap, you wash your hands, the virus is now removed, now you touch the tap to turn it off and so surely the virus is now back on your hands?

    1. Wash hands
    2. Turn off tap either by bopping it with an elbow or grab a paper towel to turn it off

I have visions of people having similar questions, not being able to come up with a solution and thinking “Ah sure why bother washing them at all?”

    Next phase...zombie apocalypse

People forgetting that yes while 80% of the cases are mild, 20% are not and while most will recover, the damage can be life changing. I really want to see more research/reports on the 20% that recover and the damage.

In a scenario where a person contracts this virus,

If you have been in contact with the person who got infected:

I get the whole 14 days isolation, to stop the spread, but is there any info on how to get tested, and how long it takes to get results back etc

Do you isolate for 14 days, then get tested

Do you get tested after a set number of days

.....or does the test only work, after symptoms show, rather than straight after you make contact with the person that has it?

Where did this person pick it up???

    Western Australia

a woman in her 30s who returned to the state this week after travelling to Iceland and London, and flying home via Dubai. The woman remains in home isolation.

There are cases in Iceland transmitted by people returning from Italy. London and UAE have cases too.

There still may be an Italian connection.

Yup, strenuous exercise that elevates your heart rate is great in normal conditions. But with an illness like this it can be deadly. I exercise a lot so I'm a little paranoid about this.

You would think from the time Ireland had to watching how other countries have dealt with the out break. They would have put more proactive than reactive measures in place.

Italy seem to have been part of the problem, too slow to give firm direction to citizens in the affected areas. Some people observing low contact and others just feckless and spreading it to both locals and visitors.

The HSE have been utterly dysfunctional for 2 decades. I don't think people really grasp how badly organised and managed it is.
Well paid managers with zero accountability that cannot be fired even if they add little value or make things worse.
I don't understand how people expect them to suddenly improve.

I believe the virus is estimated to be able to last up to 28 days on a cold 4° metal surface. It's currently 3-4° where I am.

Or do what Irish people seem to often do in public facilities - just leave the taps running :(

3 deaths in Spain now of elderly vulnerable people; very disturbing the level of spread already out there.

a 38 yo woman, also healthy and no pre-existing conditions was interviewed yesterday by the Italian press, she has been in intensive care for a about a week. There is no guarantee whatsoever that young people are not going to be affected

BBC News - Crufts goes ahead in Birmingham amid coronavirus outbreak
    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-51750512

The annual event has some restrictions in place due to the coronavirus outbreak but is still expected to attract about 26,000 dogs and more than 160,000 people.

Mini st Patrick's day numbers. Let's see in a week or so how that goes.

Well, they are all connected to China at the end. The thing is, banning flights from Italy is kind of silly at this point because
    a. the virus is in Ireland and spreading,
    b. people fly from all EU locations to Ireland daily and all countries have plenty of cases by now

I see they're still finding ways to exclude previous cases to make the graph look exponential, albeit with a really small y-axis scale which nobody will notice.

No it's silly not to ban them. Ban all travel for a couple of weeks, the world won't end if you do. Hmmmmn Are you Michael o Leary?

And we may add, it's as well we have social media and even local and tabloid media who are prepared to give out real hard information as to where issues are arising. RTE have been utterly useless in their public service broadcasting role in terms of assisting the population to make rational informed decisions.

Speaking to the press from a sealed glass room while wearing a full hazmat suit, Simon Harris says there is nothing to worry about and the Covid19 hasnt reached pandemic levels in Ireland yet

The competence of those in charge at such a time is vital. Obviously it can make a huge difference.

It’s reasons like this that however this turns out, it will be worse then it needs to be. Governments saying one thing (accepting this could get very bad and saying its level 4 footing ready) and then allowing these events to continue. Sharp pain now buys us time to really see how this is going to play out. Maybe this is going to blow itself out but if it doesn’t decisions like This are going to be very costly.

Nobody in authority can say with confidence what’s going to happen but they can see what’s happening in Korea and other countries so they actually have a pretty decent peak into the future of their own countries. And yet they leave the most likely super spreading events to continue. Again, there is a disparity between what governments are saying and the steps they are taking to contain the virus. Completely inconsistent, dysfunctional thinking.
