Sinister Coveney says not effective to restrict flights from parts of Italy. Is he following the epidemiological history of the virus? Getting advice probably from the halfwits in the HSE or maybe IBEC

People claiming that this thread is a great resource and informative - two different Western locations have been claimed here by different posters as being where the latest cases have occurred. Both instances providing no evidence, but being read and thanked by many. Totally unsubstantiated.

    Your point is?

A few nonsense posts doesn't mean the whole thing is useless.

Yeah but you said it would be worse than italy. China numbers have decreased.

Chinas numbers hasnt decreased, new cases per day has dropped, but the total keeps rising, the reasoning to that could be everyone in lockdown isolating and not testing as many as before in china.

I think that's right, but I can't help worrying about potential long term consequences that we just don't know about yet.

This is not an invitation to spam me with horror stories

It would be helpful to know what town/school the western cases refer to. It may not be yours?

I don't really understand what people suggest they do. There's somebody from the HSE talking about the virus anytime I turn on the news.

We've 6 cases in the country at the moment. Six. The subject is all over the media 24/7. Should we just get on with it and declare martial law and call in the army. People need to get a grip.
Do you think it'll stop at 6? This morning they said that the number was 2 and they didn't believe there were anymore cases. Just seems like they haven't seen how the numbers have been multiplying in every other country.

Probably because if they have symptoms and live in that area they're less likely to ignore it

My understanding is that if you have symptoms ie regular cold/flu symptoms, but haven't been to an affected country you won't get tested.
Plenty of people with flu symptoms, they're not all getting tested for covid 19

The furthest I think I ever got was the Omagh folk park. There was like a Us mock bank there and one of my classmates said to the actor "stick your hands up. It's the IRA" messing. Anyway, the police were called got a police escort back to the Irish border and school banned from the park. We were 9 years old

That is a worry! I am asthmatic (but otherwise healthy), so it worries me too.

Self isolate for two or three weeks if possible.

I've not seen anything confirming this is a single family. Possibly 2 couples which could make tracing contacts even more of a nightmare. If they were sat together on a plane those around them must have increased exposure with 4 of them potentially contagious (still better than 2 pairs on different parts of the plane I guess)

No, the latest is that they travelled together but might not be family members.

There doesn't seem to be any anecdotal reports of people on planes contracting the virus though

No point attempting rational discussion. Not capable of understanding or engaging in it.

If you look at Kegan's stages of Adult development, 58% of the adult population are incapable of progressing passed stage 3 the socialised mind.

"In Stage 3, external sources shape our sense of self and understanding of the world"

This is ideal for certain people. Be experts on their laptops in their bedrooms having a cut at people that are doing their jobs. Pointless engaging them, you will be shot down with conspiracy theory and sarcastic "jokes".

It really is akin to a social experiment, and it reads pretty poorly.

There are lads here who are on 24/7 obviously with nothing better to do and all they do is criticise and think they are smart. It's incredibly sad.

Ask for a room with a decent view, it'll be nice to have a decent view during your 2 week quarantine.

Yeah I agree with this, not disputing we are likely to have a large growth in cases based on trends in other countries, but we aren't even close to epidemic stages here yet.

I work for another government department and they've been in planning mode for weeks about this, but they're not going to blather it all out to people because what will that cause? Mass panic.

And that's exactly what we don't need right now.

I understand people are afraid for relatives or even themselves but there is a tendency on these topics for the extreme opinions to be the loudest voices in the room and thus that's what everyone hears. Such as...

"Tis only a mild cold, twill be grand"

"lock down the borders and cancel all air travel"

There is a happy medium, I think we'll be fine. It will be a rough few months but people just need to keep calm.

You think the HSE hasn't been monitoring the situation in other countries? You might be on to something. You should contact them immediately.

As I said earlier, the Chinese numbers decreased because of their drastic action.

    1) Quarantined 70+ million people
    2) Shut the entire country down for over a month
    3) Everyone wear face masks so the virus can't be spread while they are pre symptomatic
    4) Temperature checks everywhere in china (yes I know not everyone infected will have a high temperature but it can catch some)
    5) China built a bloody fully functional hospital in a couple of days

...I could go on all night

The government have everyone using an App with their health status colour coded. If you are red are break quarantine. The authorities track that person down

****e. You figured out that we spend 1 hour every day discussing how to undermine the pinnacle of truth that this thread is.
    Just today I read:
The virus was in Italy since October.
Anybody flying from Italy would need to go into 14 day isolation
Somebody linking the homeless crisis to COVID 19
    And on and on.

Well you did turn up in the guise of a wise HSE guru :pac:

That said - this is boards and if anyone expects anything other than the good, the bad and the ugly - then probably they are are in the wrong place.

But yeah - knowing we dont have the resources to cope with a significant increase in demand on emergency services and resources in the event of an epidemic and that people are going to die because of that - but being told we'll get over it / isn't the EOTW - isnt the news that most people want to hear for sure ...

So we should all go "communist"? I'd love to live in an authoritarian state with a command and obey economy.
