Reading through this post and the former ones for the last few weeks.
Without posting. Reading and taking some good points some new info and disregarding some not so good posts.
    First post...
Now that the Covid has been confirmed in the west of Ireland I'm considering taking my kids out of school. When it was confirmed in the Republic I said I would take them out if it came west.. Now it is I'm hesitant and confused.
    Would love opinions though.
Would it be hasty? Or an absolute smart move. I don't trust the government to have my family's protection at the forefront of their governing, I'm certain they dont!
So too early to' go into hiding'?

Honestly, despite my recent posts, I'm not a HSE shill, eg I hate this east of the country, west of the country nonsense, but I'd still follow their main advice:
The risk of catching coronavirus in Ireland is low to moderate. This may change. However, most people may continue to go to work, school and other public places, as usual.

    https://www2.hse.ie/conditions/coronavirus/coronavirus.html

Incidentally, "risk ... is low to moderate". That's new? It had been just low. Anyone cop when it changed?

For a start wouldn't it be great if the Dept of Ed contacted all schools and asked if they had a ski trip to Italy over half term? One box ticked and information known.

I do realise that would not cover individuals, friends or families who were there to ski independently, but more information is better than less now.

Just thinking out loud. Maybe the powers that be actually DO know at this stage I dunno.

    My thoughts are, don't.

We're only at early stages of this yet, it could be a long and arduous road in front of us.

If you take them out now, when do you put them back in?

When cases are increasing? How long would you be willing to take them out for?

When Holywood makes those flu movies, usually their fictional map of (early wave1) look a bit like this (non-fictional) one:

    lylzaGm.png

Anybody know if there is a patron saint of the flu (avoidance of),
there's one for lost property, when you loose the iphone etc.
    St Edith Stein

Saint of the Day: Patron Saint against fever, plagues,

Vincent Browne would be great...but I think he wouldn't fancy a battle with the corona

He would question why Leo ia waiting another 5 days to meet with the soecial cabinet.

Why is the HSE not giving more precise info on where cases are. Even the county. We as citizens have a right to know. GDPR has them terrified.

Ask Tony Holohan why he continues to downplay the viruses impact here and will he and his family be at the parade?

Im sure there are alot of people doing their jobs in the HSE, DoH and other agencies but we pay our Taoiseach a huge salary to represent us.

Time to earn the money and make the hard decisions

Unless you’ve been to north Italy with the family lately yes it’s very hasty to be taking anyone out of school until directed to by the government.

    What government?
We have some caretaker who will be delivering that important bowl of shamrock soon across the globe.
I really wouldnt trust them to 'direct'. (cervical smears)
Point taken though. We do have a chronic asthmatic which would worry me.

I would think it's hasty unless you or close relatives (the kids are in contact with) have underlying health issues/are elderly (over 80).

I would not be overly worried about kids/teenagers getting the virus. It's who they can potentially pass it on to that I worry about.

I think that's right, but I can't help worrying about potential long term consequences that we just don't know about yet.

This is not an invitation to spam me with horror stories

Situation is evolving rapidly and you should be thinking 2 steps ahead. I find myself in similar situation.

You should have a plan and update regularly.
    • Has the situation changed?

If yes you should adopt a stance that is proportional to the risk. We have a cognitive bias when it comes to low probability high impact events. Chances of your kids contracting is still low. However the 6 cases only is bollox Given the incubation period and bias towards people only seeking treatment if and when it gets bad like the last 4 people then that 6 is 6 last week.
Exponential growth has been observed in every other major national outbreak We would be naive to think that it won't occur here by which time we'll have to adopt drastic measures.

It is beyond bizarre and incredibly worrying that the HSE are raising questions about this thread.

I'll put it to you this way.

NAS upper management have somebody specifically employed in tallaght to trawl social media, facebook, whatsapp and twitter etc to look for staff who say things they shouldn't be saying.

I think its fair if it's confidential info but for the most part they spend their time looking for staff who whistle blow or complain about the frustrations of their job. HSE management are bullies of the highest order.

With the current pandemic they must be working in overdrive.

I think the HSE would be more upfront. It's not as if they created the virus and have to cover it up.

Just a rough area of where these cases are would help people decide what level of precautions they should take e.g. in terms of avoiding large group.

"The West" could mean one of the Aran Islands or close enough to me here in Limerick.

The latest case is a family in Inverin.

In all seriousness, important to review inhaler technique with a chronic asthmatic. If you pop into your local pharmacy, they should be able to make sure he's getting the best use out of it.

Once the family of four was identified. Contact tracing on four people is a bitch. Chances of missing some potentially infected people is much greater.

Not sarcasm by the way, although tempted.

That is a worry! I am asthmatic (but otherwise healthy), so it worries me too.
