Jesus this paddy day business is getting a bit out of control here

Harris clearly said they are taking a risk based approach to this under advice from the chief medical officer

For reference deaths per year in ireland from...

    Smoking related illness 6000
    Alcohol related 1000 plus

Neither of these are banned or illegal. Should they be looking at those figures? Its a matter of opinion i suppose, but ireland as well as most places take a risk based approach on these similar to whats being discussed for the festival. Now before someones says drinking and smoking are different from this, i know they are but its the same approach. Could say the same about anything really, Roads, air travel, knives ect

Id be amazed if more people die from corona than smoking this year

Im no great fan of Harris at all but hes been very transpatent on this.

First of all, Harris and the government have been far from transparent. Everything is up in the air. In a PR sense this is being handled terribly.

Secondly, you're missing the point. A sudden spike in people requiring intensive care will create a huge strain on a system that's already under pressure. The day to day stuff in the health service will suffer, serious accidents, other illnesses to be treated alongside a largely unknown outbreak will not be a good thing.

You want to put some money on that? I'd say Paddy Power would give you incredibly attractive odds. If it's less than 6000 - <0.15% of the population - we'll be able to count ourselves very lucky.

We are still not restricting travel to and from Italy. I don’t understand the logic of not restrictions being put in place.

Waiting for some other country, if any, to do it first.
Not much point in France/Germany/Switzerland/Spain doing it at this stage.

Currently 0.004% of the Italian population has it, confirmed at least. The chances of anyone on those flights having it is minuscule.

Have three of the cases in Ireland not been imported from Italy?

if st patricks parades go ahead across the country, that effectively makes the only containment measure the HSE have in effect useless (contact tracing), as well as increasing the risk of transmission massively. it's moving us straight into the mitigation phase for the sake of a few bucks revenue.

Yeah but neither of the above is contagious. Smokers and alcoholics are the cheese to the chalk of a virus. There are cohorts in the population who are a high risk of dying if they catch this FROM OTHER PEOPLE, no diabetic or kidney transplant will die from getting snotted on by a smoker.

No need to cancel anything, this is being blown out of all proportion, its a glorified flu virus and this thread is full of absolute nutters

    People just panicked a bit.

We have all had time to take things onboard and get the shock out of our system.

There was a poster on here who came home from holiday ill he was taken into hospital for testing.

    People called him a troll.

He has emailed me prove that yes he is in an isolation unit being tested with other people who feel ill.

On reflection people return from holiday with bugs all the time in this climate the HSE are just being careful and giving these people tests to make sure.

People me included screamed HSE coverup.

Others said bull there is no isolation unit.

The HSE just wanted to be able to test people without media glare or a pitchforked mob.

Back to planet reality we have two confirmed cases and the HSE are testing ill people in isolation for things they normally would have went to their GP for.:)

Having said that this is more than a flu Governments are taking it seriously.:)

I have lived with the mistaken impression that the first responsibility of government in a democratic society was to protect and safeguard the lives of its citizens.

That HSE news conference was a disgrace.

But I suppose it is nice to know what the governments and HSE's real priorities are.

    - Business is more important than citizens lives.

    - Cattle health is more important than citizens lives.

    - Older people - f*uck em

    A sad day.

I think the issue people had with the poster you referenced is that fair enough he may be in isolation due to whatever illness but that isnt covid, would have been tested for that at the start. Plus it was mentioned about being able to go for a smoke.

Whatever he has I hope he gets better.

.... and what do we do, throw massive pointless parades up and down the country ensuring everyone spreads their germs all over the shop.....

Thialand has been at 42 cases for a week or two now. They appear to be able to keep it in check. Italy is really surprising me. It's just a machine at spreading this.

The cause of the typical 20-a day fag smokers this year, may well actually be directly due to COVID19 (lungs), so very difficult to seperate to a single AvB cause.

And yet they have a huge spike in pneumonia cases. Weird that. I would personally take Thai figures with a pinch of salt.

I hope he gets better too.

HSE did tell people who felt ill not to go to GP or A&E so it looks like they have been working away quietly in the background.

They let him have a smoke big deal.

I don't think they would somehow although there are some in here who think it will kill 250k+ Irish people so 6000 seems conservative in comparison but I don't think it will be anywhere near that high either unless this thing keeps coming back to haunt us every year.

Italy are closing down all schools and looking at much more.
It is the most heavily infected country in Europe, and we may have more than 5,000 of them coming over here in the coming days. Ludicrous that the match was cancelled and the flights bringing all of the people (the real worry) weren't.
Yet Harris says banning flights from Italy will not be effective.
I'd be willing to take the chance.
You can be pretty confident if there are a few with it getting on the plane, it will likely mean the majority of the plane is infected, getting off.
If people need to get home, have specific flights for them, and tell them that they need to contact an office, make that flight or stay there. When they arrive, quarantine, no bus or trains.

We knew it was coming, but do we really need to invite it in en masse?

Christ almighty. Harris appears to be pulling that logic out of his rear end.

We have a huge spike of infection right around the world arising from people transitting from Italy.

Yet we are being told - that suspending flights from the affected Italian areas would not work for “a variety reasons”, including that "it would not prevent people from those areas arriving into Ireland through other member states"

Wtf? Suspending flights would certainly significantly reduce numbers travelling to and from Italy.

It's a bit like saying there's no point telling people not to drink and drive as people will do it anyway.

Italy can shut down universities and schools and yet we cant take our finger out even temporarily limit small numbers travelling to and from Italy!!!!

We can quarantine anyone travelling from Italy via other destinations if need be. It's not rocket science....
