And you really felt the need to post that here?

I remember looking at a weekend away in europe a few months back for the missus and myself i refined it to low to high price, to travel to italy was so much more cheaper than the rest of europe, point is its probably the same now and so much people would jump at a weekend away or a few days for nearly the same price as 1 night in a hotel here and the same people wouldnt be batting an eyelid at whats going on.

They say its only confined to certain areas in italy does this mean there is no transport or people moving around for work, truck drivers delivery drivers and all these different 1s will be travelling from these "confined areas" while people in rome on a few days break is thinking like awh sure were alright its only in a few small cities and towns up north.

I swear the politicians think were all still in the 18th century with barely any travel.

Lack of testing. One of the NI cases confirmed today wouldn't even have been tested here because he hadn't travelled to Italy or China.

That's incorrect, they would have been tested here because they were in contact with another confirmed Coronavirus case, the same reason they were tested there.

In fairness the gym should've sorted out it's pandemic policy after the Spanish flu.

    They've had over 100 years.

How on earth is the death rate so much worse in Italy than South Korea?

SK: 33 deaths from 5621 cases
ITA: 107 deaths from 2706 cases

It has been noted that South Korea is pretty much at the top of the glass globally with numbers of hospital beds per capita. There must be something else going wrong in Italy however.

They must have had a large number of cases before realising they had one either knowingly or unknowingly. I recall they couldn't trace patient 0, maybe they announced only when they had to in order to prevent panic spreading. In terms of deaths SK has tested far more cases. Italy has much higher rate of hospitalisation although Korea is now seeing long waiting lists for beds too.

    Time will tell of course.

Nothing. Only a minimal increase would be possible anyway. That's why it's critical we slow the spread of the virus as much as possible.

There might only be 250 ICU beds officially. But there is also capacity to use Operating Theatres and Theatre Recovery beds, as these would also be set up for ventilated patients. There may also be additional ventilators for routine maintenance/spare parts. Last option is Minister passing a statutory instrument or seeking cooperation from private hospitals to cancel surgeries and either make ICU beds available and Theatres, or just taking their Ventilators.

Professor Kingston Mills, School of biochemistry and immunology in Trinity thinks travel from regions with high numbers of cases should be limited to increase our chances of containing this. (Rte news)

How is it we arent having a similar infection rate to other countries?

    Is it lack of testing?

People being convinced its only a cold so not reporting when mild symptoms appear (who arent tested i suppose if they havent travelled)

    Or just plain luck

Appaling performance by Bord Failte. Another public body that can't do anything right. Bad as HSE. Pathetic Ireland:rolleyes:

Is this a similar virus to SARS? Does anyone know why it's spreading so much and so fast compared to SARS?

Italy are closing down all schools and looking at much more.
It is the most heavily infected country in Europe, and we may have more than 5,000 of them coming over here in the coming days. Ludicrous that the match was cancelled and the flights bringing all of the people (the real worry) weren't.
Yet Harris says banning flights from Italy will not be effective.
I'd be willing to take the chance.
You can be pretty confident if there are a few with it getting on the plane, it will likely mean the majority of the plane is infected, getting off.
If people need to get home, have specific flights for them, and tell them that they need to contact an office, make that flight or stay there. When they arrive, quarantine, no bus or trains.

We knew it was coming, but do we really need to invite it in en masse?

It really doesn't spread that easily. There have already been multiple cases on planes where it didn't spread to other passengers.

For all those people looking for a cancellation of the St Patricks Day parades, will you be looking for the pubs to be closed too or will they be packed as per usual?

I was asked about Runaways yesterday and I have received an email from him today with pictures inside a HSE ward doing tests for the virus.

I would post the pictures but I have been told not to.

Edit I can provide proof to mods if asked but I will respect his wishes.

He obviously doesn't have the virus if it's not been reported in the media.. hope he gets better though.

There you go now. No implications. None.

People will be flying from France/Germany/Spain/Switzerland and so on, and they all may be infected too
Stopping flights from Italy won't do much

save the trouble and jazz it up

Get a message from a friend in the UAE saying they’re thinking of closing all schools by Sunday (that’s their equivalent of Monday btw) and funnily enough they have no alternatives to teaching from home despite saying “there WILL be alternatives” (according to him)

Similar thing was happening in Italy prior to the major outbreak - Padua University Hospital recommended testing people with no symptoms, the Region wrote a stern letter demanding that they didn't (waste of money, or something).

    Now look who was right.

    lettera-regione-veneto.jpeg

There's also a case of a Neapolitan solicitor who was displaying symptoms after a trip to Milan (who wasn't a "red zone" area at the time) and was told he wouldn't be tested. He had to threaten legal action against the hospital. He learnt from the papers he was case 1 there. I'm certain he's not the only one in that situation.

What I find interesting is that Norway with all its money and oil are not closing anything down of yet... whereas if we are to read deep into this forum as a idea of what the public think.... we would be closing down the country as if it was 2 inches of snow...

I'm not saying we shouldnt but I'm also not saying we should... Norway could cope with closing things down as it's very rich... dont think ireland could

Good point. Interesting to see what neighbours are doing. I heard that they've ploughed a sizeable chunk of their wealth via research globally in trying to combat low probability high impact pathogens like this one.

One difference is they have a **** load of money. They also have mandatory conscription so huge chuck of population can be called on if needed. They've reduced this in last 20 years but still a lot of people. They aren't part of EU but are part of EEA. Switzerland is very similar and likewise hasn't shut off borders.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegian_Armed_Forces#Conscription

We might be just due a good cull. Global warming and all.

He says he still feels a bit off.

Being tested for a few things.

It looks like the isolation ward he is in are doing testing.

A lot of people get sick after holidays it could just be the HSE being careful and there may be not confirmed cases in the ward.

Looks like he was telling the truth.

Anyway I hope he gets better soon.

Are people avoiding all air travel, or only to virus hot spots?

My brothers are going to Liverpool for their game at the weekend, and with a case confirmed there now I'm hoping they decide otherwise.

I'm sure they'd be fine, it's our mother I'd be worried about them passing them on to when they get back.

Am I overreacting or should I be insisting they stay home?

Definitely insist they stay at home for their own sakes. Liverpool are playing absolute muck currently.

Yeah I just think saying it that way will get peoples backs up. Just say you're still assessing the situation. Like we're really thinking about this and trying to make the best decision. Not... We can't see a single issue with a massive gathering of people during a global pandemic. (Yeah I said pandemic!)
