save the trouble and jazz it up

I think it’s also concerning how, you need to remember a LOT of people visit the parade in Dublin from America and other countries as a “cultural experience” ... and with America about to blow up with cases Possibly in the next few days, well... why is the government hesitating in this decision?

If this gets worse in Ireland, how odd will I look wearing a facemask, using disposable gloves and alcohol wipes in public.

Paddy's day is an American tradition, that's where it started. They should not come here!

We will look back at the decision not to cancel the parade and heads will roll. Parts of Europe have effectively shut up shop and we still have a chance to contain this before it erupts altogether and what do we do, throw massive pointless parades up and down the country ensuring everyone spreads their germs all over the shop. The fact that livestock were treated with more respect back in the foot and mouth crisis than the most vulnerable here is actually depressing. But hey, there was money to be made from that market. Older people shouldn’t be seen as disposable collateral damage because they happen to be ill already.

There’s still 13 days to go. There’s every chance it will be cancelled yet.

If it wasn't so worrying, I'd laugh so much at that!

I can't remember the last time I went to a St. Patricks Day parade and I'm not about to start again now!

South Korea seems to be taking longer than anywhere else to reach recovery stage?

And yet three of the cases on this island have flown from that part of Italy. Beating those odds I'd say.

How is it that Northern Ireland, a region with 1/3 of our population, a far more homogeneous demographic and a main airport with a tiny fraction of the traffic going through Dublin has 3 cases while we have 2?
It just doesn’t stand to reason.
Are the HSE’s testing protocols, procedures, equipment as effective?

A drive through testing facility was opened in Antrim shortly after the Koreans opened theirs. I'd imagine they're testing more readily and given my experience of the NHS in the North (dad was long term seriously ill) they, at times, are happy enough to plough into something if needed and not worry about the cost until later. The nurses and support staff in particular were fantastic and a lot of them come from all over to train and end up staying.

It's not perfect but it's better than my experience in England.

An infected marching band from Texas mutating into zombies on O'Connell Bridge and devouring the crowd and Marty Morrissey on live TV has the makings of a fantastic scene from a horror movie.

HSE: "No cause for concern folks, all perfectly normal and part of the show."

That'd be the 9/11 that was the casus belli responsible for 100s of 1000s, if not millions, of deaths, and still dominates geopolitics and military adventurism 20 years on. No biggie.

It’s another option, if you start feeling sick just drive up north.

Jesus this paddy day business is getting a bit out of control here

Harris clearly said they are taking a risk based approach to this under advice from the chief medical officer

For reference deaths per year in ireland from...

    Smoking related illness 6000
    Alcohol related 1000 plus

Neither of these are banned or illegal. Should they be looking at those figures? Its a matter of opinion i suppose, but ireland as well as most places take a risk based approach on these similar to whats being discussed for the festival. Now before someones says drinking and smoking are different from this, i know they are but its the same approach. Could say the same about anything really, Roads, air travel, knives ect

Id be amazed if more people die from corona than smoking this year

Im no great fan of Harris at all but hes been very transpatent on this.

Been watching thjs thread for a while feels a bit like watching a car crash in slow motion. We could easily be northern Italy in a months time!

The HSE is probably hoping that coronavirus will come and pass with no problems for a lot of people. Then others who struggle with what appears like a bad chest infection, they will be seen to and treated with oxygen. It's a bit of a raw deal for those in a high risk/vulnerable group who would like a proactive approach.

I think it's because they're detecting much quicker so there'll be a greater lag between detection and recovery. Apparently up to 100,000 tests which is impressive comparing to the UK efforts.

There is vast amounts of resources put into trying to stop people drinking to excess and smoking.

How many lives should be lost or at risk before we postpone a parade?

Why is it different to protecting cattle?

Higher percentage of the population in the North of the country. The rugby region.

The people who contract the virus, who otherwise may not have if the parades and other events were cancelled, and possibly become seriously ill or worse will no doubt be comforted by your wise words.
