Linear: arranged or extending in a straight or nearly straight line.
In this case it would mean a fairly constant level of new cases every day, EG 20 today, 22 tomorrow, 19 day after ...

Exponential: becoming more and more rapid. EG 20 today, 40 tomorrow, 70 the day after.

Yeah, but to be a bit less scary it seems to double every six days

The story that helped me get my head around exponential growth was something I heard when I was a kid - The story of the invention of chess.
There's a famous legend about the origin of chess that goes like this. When the inventor of the game showed it to the emperor of India, the emperor was so impressed by the new game, that he said to the man

    "Name your reward!"
    The man responded,

"Oh emperor, my wishes are simple. I only wish for this. Give me one grain of rice for the first square of the chessboard, two grains for the next square, four for the next, eight for the next and so on for all 64 squares, with each square having double the number of grains as the square before."
The emperor agreed, amazed that the man had asked for such a small reward - or so he thought. After a week, his treasurer came back and informed him that the reward would add up to an astronomical sum, far greater than all the rice that could conceivably be produced in many many centuries!

One grain of rice on the first square, doubling all the way to the 64th square - leads to 18,446,744,073,709,551,615 grains of rice.

Aer Lingus not flying to Milan until after 10th April, full refunds available or waiving change fee. Confirmed by Aer Lingus this morning as we had flights to Milan booked on 17th March.

You can still book on their site?

Flight back this morning was only quarter full. A strategic cough and I could have had 3 rows to myself with little risk of coming within 1.5m of anyone

Can you self quarantine on a lilo out in Dublin Bay for 14 days, please?

14 Italian tourists in India test positive...jaysis Italy must be bursting at the seams with corona
As someone quite astutely pointed out on this thread last week, Italy made a balls of their initial response.

They focussed on shutting down inbound travel from affected areas rather than on containment.

As a result, by the time their first cases were confirmed, the thing was already embedded.
They put no restrictions on gatherings or outbound travel, hence why the vast majority of cases outside of China have come from Italy.

Realistically we should be looking at suspending all major gatherings in Dublin for the next 3-4 weeks. Now that we have two confirmed cases, there are likely others.

Paddy's Parade, gigs over 1,000 people, sports events, etc. Encourage employers to have employees work from home as much as possible to reduce public transport use. Outside of Dublin I wouldn't be too concerned unless there's reason to believe the new case could have spread it beyond.

And cancel all flights from Northern Italy. If nothing else it might discourage anyone planning on flying there if they can't get back again.

No need for major panic, but we have the opportunity here to learn from the mistakes of others.

Point of order. It doesn't make them an expert beyond the niche in which they studied in order to obtain their PhD.

Point of order. Did I say it did? He is referencing other expert opinion.

Not from this wknd until 10th April! They are stopping all flights from this weekend- or so they told me on the phone this morning. Funnily enough Ryanair is allowing me to book a flight to Milan on 17th March (the same day our Aer Lingus flight has been cancelled).

My own cynical mind has me thinking the Government and those in power are afraid to take responsibility as if they cancel these events now someone is going to look to be compensated by the Government because as a result of their decision they are out of pocket.

Coronavirus in blue. It's been closer to linear than it has been to exponential so far.

I’m hoping I’m not the only dumb dumb here but I’ll take one for the team.......

Could someone explain linear and exponential please?

    :embarrassed:

Imagine a chess board - 64 squares. You put one grain of rice in the first square then in the next you put the total of the previous square (1) and add one grain of rice, and so on, till you have 63 grains of rice on the last square, that's a linear progression.

Now do the same, except each square has 2 times the number of grains as the previous square, that's exponential. On the last square you would have 72,057,594,037.9 Tonnes of rice (64 grains to the gram) - more rice than is grown in a year.
