Jesus, she can't win can she. If she was out in public she would be putting us all at risk or some other bull****.

Maybe she is looking after her kids, the absolute monster.
    I don't' think its anyone's business.

Exactly. i'm no fan of Mary Lou but her name being public on this shows why DOH are right not to identify school. Of course a stupid parent went public anyway.

I think this idea was put forward a few times now.

The issue is, everyone wants to be taken serious so will post in the so called factual thread. And I don't think the mods want to spend all their time deleting posts on one out of the many threads they have to mod.

Yeah but they'd stand out more and have to up their game. It works well for weather usually.

In the factual all updates from reputable sources. Medical statements etc.

In general i was talking to a lad on the bus from Templetuohy who said the HSE wouldn't test his brother when he had a temperature type stuff.

Could it not just be because the day is not over and more case are to be reported? Or is there a daily cut-off time for these stats?

Strange that they reported some... I will check the numbers later.

The advice from the HSE was not to go to school but for everyone else in the house to continue on as normal.

By isolating herself, Mary-Lou is just adding to the hysteria around this.

I'm not a fan of Mary Lou, but for god sake she's also a mother. Her kids are probably fearful, I know mine would be. Maybe she wants to be with her kids when they get tested?

    Novel == "new"

COVID-19 is the disease caused by the virus. The actual virus is called "SARS-CoV-2". (Think of the distinction between HIV and AIDS, former being the virus and the latter being the disease). SARS-CoV-2 is a corona virus. It is the most recent to be identified/encountered which is why it is currently the "novel" or new one.

If you buy a new BMW car, you can refer to it as your new car. If you buy a different Mercedes car in 5 years, you will then presumably refer to than one as your new car.

i.e. when you call something "new", you don't associate that qualifier with it until the end of time!
I'm referring to the grammar of articles and it's the grammar that affects the word novel here. A novel virus means any example, like your list here. The novel virus means a specific or known one or it's part of the title. If it's not part of the name then use the name they have given it.

Given the outcomes for some with Pandemrix you could see why people might be reluctant to be vaccinated if and when a vaccine becomes available.

I thought the guiding theory was that it was the viral infection that lead to increased levels of narcolepsy or at least it was inconclusive.

Distribution of laboratory confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the EU/EEA and the UK, as of 3 March 2020

Big drop in the numbers of daily cases in Europe today, mainly because of Italy's smaller numbers.

Did Italy change their reporting procedures ?

Good news or statistical glitch ?

    Time will tell.

Italy refused to test for too long. There weren't 500 new people being infected every day it was that the few k had built up over a few weeks and when they started to test they were finding 500 per day. Now they may have found the majority of people so there are less cases to find.

The Mater is the only hospital in Dublin set up to handle this. They recently announced that they have set up a 6 bed ward to handle Covid 19.

CUH also has a ward cleared out and ready. I know you specified Dublin but I imagine most hospitals probably have plans in place at this stage.

Has anyone been through security at Dublin Airport?

Those "trays" that you have to put your valuables in for x - ray.....is anyone from Aer Rianta giving them a clean?

Italian ministry normally has another statement at 5:30pm their time, so about an hour from now, with further updates.

Cautiously optimistic about the drop in new cases from Italy. We'll have to wait and see if that continues.

Either that or because Italy announced that they were changing their testing criteria to a more lax one like ours. Not sure what their final decision has been.

And germany went the opposite way, increasing testing massively and so they'll be off to the races. Until they've had enough and switch back. Fair play to South Korea, they kept it up despite the hardship.

My OH ordered some Hydrogen Peroxide yesterday, it came today. We've been using alot the past few months for cleaning, great stuff, gets the taps really shiny. Looks like a good minute of it will work.

If it's 14%, be prepared for a Guard to be knocking on your door one evening, asking what you bought it for.

My sister in Oz has told that people are in full blown panic buying mode over there. Some shelfs empty, particulary toilet roll.

Media in full overdrive over there, new travel insurance policies are now halted all over the country.

    Over reaction ?

A worrying barchart when you superimpose what happened in China a month ago on top of what is happening in the rest of the world right now.

The y axis on the left shows the actual numbers to date.

I am unsure what the y axis on the right is... worst case scenario perhaps?

Maybe this thread should follow the course of some weather event threads. A reasonably technical, factual one and one for general discussion.

All the sizeable minority who love being smart a*ses and want to crack one liners can be quarantined in general discussion. A lot of what you read through are comments 13 year olds make when trying to be cool but are really lacking in confidence at the back of it.

Take note of those posters that post the BNO twitter feed as it has been a valuable source since the beginning of January. Follow those posters and also watch who respond to them. That will help you filter the general chat and make scrolling quickly easier.

DONT scroll past all the posts though. There’s some seriously funny one liners in here that can brighten anyone’s day.

What do they mean by the novel case?

They keep saying a new novel case is found. What makes it novel?
Novel means new whist not resembling something formerly known (original).

BNO Newsdesk tweeted that news at 8:50 on Saturday about the positive diagnosis. What time was the band practice on the Saturday?
Regardless of whether he knew the result of test beforehand, what kind of parent would think it's a good idea to let him out and about until he had the all clear?

Would it not have been better to keep the kid in hospital for a fortnight, even if he isn't seriously ill? Even if it isn't recommended practice. he's only one case (so far fingers crossed etc.)
