Yeh, when you saw Dr Bruce talking about China, it really did look like the first few weeks (month or so) China reacted slow and thats what caused more issues. Its probably why countries outside are reacted quite quickly when their cases go up. In fairness it does look like countries are maybe better at reacting when it gets bad (learning from China) then they are at containment (where they certainly appear more apathetic publicly).

    I'd agree.

This is all about minimising loss until an effective treatment can be brought into play; if your not going to take China's lead (i.e. locking down the whole country), that's your only other option.

I wonder how long it will be before someone smacks someone on the bus for sneezing.

Was on a jam packed bus this morning and the guy sneezing in the back was getting some serious looks.

Saw videos of Asians being attacked in Italy because coronavirus only comes from Asians or whatever bull**** these racist Italians want to come up with.

The funny thing is..all victims were Filipino, not Chinese...a country with 3 cases 2 of which have recovered.

Watching the WHO and I think they said transmission in families is 5-10%?

But my layman understand was also that they also said they still dont fully understand how it transmits and accepted that most of the people in these figures were not tested (from a zoological perspective or something like that) so in effect they could have the virus but have no symptoms.

Yeah, it really depends now if countries implement the containment measures being recommended by the WHO.

A few experts who I respect are beginning to think the Summer may help with containment

WHO advising that it is not in pandemic territory yet as most cases are localised to China, all within one region.

Outside of China most cases are a result of cluster spreads from Chinese travel and not as a result of community spread, so a good sign.

Community spread in US, Italy, S Korea and China.
And Thailand has a viral pneumonia..

Time to barricade the doors and give food thru a window then

Bit of a jump to go from kids not self isolating to that.

Is this not very contagious? Stopping travel and strict quarantines would be something that can be done as was done then. I don't see disinfectant being sprayed on buildings or public transport like then either.
Possible contagion is not a reason to go postal on the country, when better hand washing seems a moderately effective solution. It will spread, like colds and flu but until there are larger clusters the approach to date makes sense for us. No harm in some disinfectant actually being used on public transport anyway.

The sheer pig ignorance of lots of people on public transport is something to behold. Coughing with open mouths, or into their hand which they then immediately wipe on a seat or pole. I know some people have allergies and reasons for needing to cough or sneeze but for the love of God, how are people so self involved that they won't follow basic hygiene precautions at a time there's a global virus making people really sick?

Or, there's not as many people flying to Italy now, so rather than having half full planes, they cancel 25% and have full planes! Ryanair are a business first!

Well you are putting faith in one poster who is putting faith in his child who is putting faith in other children who are saying by txt that they are in Omni. It could be called a chain of faith and you know what the say about chains.

Its astonishing. Too many people think it's more important to have their phone in their hand rather than a tissue

Regardless of whether the HSE discloses any identifying information, that information will still become widely known.

There are 400 pupils in this school, all self-isolating at home now, doubtless texting their friends, Snapchatting, and posting on the Internet. You think they don't know the identity of the infected student and are not spreading that information around? I'd guess thousands of people already know his or her identity.

If the concern is someone not getting dirty looks in the supermarket (as another poster put it) because the entire community knows they've been infected with the coronavirus, that is unavoidable in this day and age, regardless of what policies the HSE puts in place.

You are either missing or are ignoring the point. I know that the pupils and others connected with the school will have spread information around. I am quite sure the HSE will have recognised this too.

But the message from the HSE is to all people who may be harbouring this virus (or, indeed, any other infectious disease) that you can contact us with confidence that we will not disclose potentially identifying information. Do you not see that if they are seen to undermine this then it risks some people not coming forward at all? Is that going to be helpful to the community, never mind the individual concerned?

It is in all our interests that any individual can feel they can contact the HSE in confidence.

Any body else wonder why many of our reporters aren't asking relevant searching questions on this topic on TV etc?

Like for example why aren't more tests being done, like in Italy etc. etc.

That is for testing numbers, not confirmations.

We need to keep track of testing

    11th Feb 65 tested 0 confirmed
    19th Feb 78 tested 0 confirmed
    25th Feb 90 tested 0 confirmed

I thought they were just giving the numbers for those tested in a given week but the news report linked above for 25 Feb said 90 tested so far and reads like 90 is the total since testing began. Can anyone shed light on whether the above is a inning total or a weekly one?

But stopping flights to Italy a couple of days ago would have been impossible or insane according to some here. Watch % cancelled flights going up anyway to 50% -75% by the weekend.

We just kept importing cases from a hot country for the sake of a week or two more of 'be grand'. No foresight at all.

If they're saying that the R0 is less than seasonal flu, then that is huge news and means that it should be easy to contain. I don't believe it though. It will all depend on how many cases have a long incubation period. If the majority are 2-5 days, we're grand. If there are high numbers asymptomatic for ten days or more, we are screwed.
