They’re asking the “ sure more die from the flu?” Question

    Basic answer
If 2% of people die and we decide not to try stop this, then I don’t know why I’m doing this job.

Well you are putting faith in one poster who is putting faith in his child who is putting faith in other children who are saying by txt that they are in Omni. It could be called a chain of faith and you know what the say about chains.

And that Is my right to believe who I want to believe about what I want to believe.
I'm failing to see your point.

    I'd agree.

This is all about minimising loss until an effective treatment can be brought into play; if your not going to take China's lead (i.e. locking down the whole country), that's your only other option.

They didn't lock down the whole country though. Only affected regions.

We need to keep track of testing

    11th Feb 65 tested 0 confirmed
    19th Feb 78 tested 0 confirmed
    25th Feb 90 tested 0 confirmed

I thought they were just giving the numbers for those tested in a given week but the news report linked above for 25 Feb said 90 tested so far and reads like 90 is the total since testing began. Can anyone shed light on whether the above is a inning total or a weekly one?

They said they were having difficulty with procurement. I now think they were talking about testing kits.

They did a wholly inadequate amount of testing

It's bad enough when you have idiots around the place but when those people are those in some kind of authority such as teachers, well it's quite dangerous.

86,000 approx with Corona virus. Over two months since this started Is that not a small number considering the world's population and how accessible it is to travel the world now? Or am I being very niave?

Like for example why aren't more tests being done, like in Italy etc. etc.

They have said they will only release how many tests they’ve done in a weekly basis. This will be released Tuesdays based on Monday’s final figure. From one of the press conferences iirc

But stopping flights to Italy a couple of days ago would have been impossible or insane according to some here. Watch % cancelled flights going up anyway to 50% -75% by the weekend.

We just kept importing cases from a hot country for the sake of a week or two more of 'be grand'. No foresight at all.

Northern Italy is feckin freezing in a damp miserable way this time of year. The plains of Lombardy make Ireland look tropical :D

They locked down about 780 million people.

    59 Million in Hubei alone...

But the message from the HSE is to all people who may be harbouring this virus (or, indeed, any other infectious disease) that you can contact us with confidence that we will not disclose potentially identifying information. Do you not see that if they are seen to undermine this then it risks some people not coming forward at all? Is that going to be helpful to the community, never mind the individual concerned?

It doesn't make much practical difference whether the information that "Joe Bloggs has the coronavirus" comes from the HSE or from people in the community spreading the word. If the concern is people shunning Joe in the supermarket, that will happen regardless.

    This is from the website:

    18. Who should be tested for COVID-19?
People who fit the ‘case definition’ of a possible case of COVID-19 should be tested for COVID-19. A case definition is a set of criteria which indicate that a person is at increased risk of having picked up an infectious disease. According to the Irish case definition, a possible case ofCOVID-19 is someone who has
possible exposure to a person with confirmed COVID-19 AND respiratory symptoms, as explained below:

    1. Possible exposure to a person with confirmed COVID-19:
In the 14 days before the start of your symptoms you:
    • Were in close contact with a case of COVID-19;
      OR
    • Were in an area with presumed ongoing community transmission of COVID-19
      OR
    • Worked in or attended a health care facility where patients with COVID-19 were being treated
    AND
    2. Respiratory symptoms
    • Have a severe acute respiratory infection that needs to be treated in hospital and where your symptoms or radiology (x-ray/scan) results suggest that you have pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
      OR
    • Have acute respiratory infection of any degree of severity including at least one of the following: fever, cough, shortness of breath
      OR
    • Have fever of unknown cause with no other symptoms
    19. Why are the case definitions of possible cases of COVID-19 different in different countries?
Ireland is following the ECDC case definition, which includes people with acute respiratory infection who have a history of travel to areas with presumed ongoing community transmission of COVID-19.
    20. Where can I get tested for COVID-19?
If your doctor thinks that you need a laboratory test for COVID-19, they will advise you where and how the test will be undertaken. They will make contact with and refer you to the appropriate health facility. They will also tell you when the test results can be expected.

    I'd tend to agree.

But my gut is telling me this is the only good news we're going to get until a treatment is being mass produced.

Yeah but the HSE don’t want to pay legal fees if they are sued by Joe Bloggs :)

Only half the country, 700 million people the population of Europe. And cities like Shanghai and Beijing, Shenzen were effected by travel restrictions for weeks.

Saw this yesterday, simple but genius idea. Much less of a chance of negative folks picking it up than in a shared waiting room.
