My OH works in a primary school, the amount of parents that send their sick kids into school is frightening. Its basically child abuse in a way.

It's the economy. Everyone has to be working all the time or they're not a productive member of society. If you have to take the day off work to look after your sick child, how do you make up the lost money? If they're able to stand, you might think sure chance it, it'll be grand.

And given the highly individualistic nature of capitalist, so called liberal democracies, why should you care about anyone other than yourself and your family? I'm not saying it's right but this is the type of society we've created. Thankfully we're not in the advanced American phase yet but we're heading there.

Will be interesting to see the numbers out of France and Germany today. France has stopped testing patients with mild symptoms as numbers were too large.

I presume then the CFR will spike due to this (i.e only the serious cases are counted).

Makes sense. Whats the point in testing them? If you've got flu like symptoms, stay in and don't spread it around. If it gets worse call us.

Soon In a few weeks cases will probably not be counted coronavirus related deaths likely to just be released. Releasing the count cases seems to be instilling alot of panic. It might be just better for the experts to be aware of them at this stage

Don't believe that. Can't see even Covid19 wanting to go to Tipperary.

Believe it or not we were told my my 2 boys school to send them in if they feel ok. There off and will be staying off for 2 weeks. School is to send an updated email later.

Were lucky we have two bathrooms, trying to keep my daughter in her room mostly and keep the upstairs bathroom for her use only. Were using paper and plastic plates and forks etc. Kids washing hands more regular.

We have enough food for a week and will be getting take always too. Just going to have a lazy film day today.

Theres parents currently at school which again is madness.

Ill update further throughout the day.

    Its a disgrace Joe!

Honestly it's no different in the corporate world. People show up at work with 40c Fevers coughing and sniffing away, nobody sends them home. It's our working culture here in Ireland where being sick is seen as taking time off from work to relax. Contractors in my office come to work no matter what as they can't afford to be sick due to not getting sick days paid. Once it hits us properly it will hit hard. I have 3 people that are very sick around me right now.

    What?

20% chance of it being announced today or maybe 40% or 60% or 80% or even 100%, as in guaranteed to happen between now and 12PM? What do you think?

6 new cases in Belgium ,all recently returned from Italy. A large percent of the Italian population must have this virus for it so infect such an enormous amount of tourists

You mean they have the sniffles? Or a bit of a cough?

Very few, if any, parents sends sick children to school.

    Child abuse!? Jesus Christ.

Yes they do send their children to school sick continuously I’m afraid. Some schools call the parents for the child to be collected as they are completely unfit for the classroom environment. They eventually collect and send them back in the next day as sick or even worse. The behaviour of some parents is shocking which is why I’m so concerned about schools spreading the infection like wildfire.

Don't believe the hype, you and your family will more than likely (massively more than likely) be fine.

But you are right; it's madness those kids are out playing. You can only look after yourself though.

Rightly or wrongly, I agree with this. When you are bombarded every day with people (grown adults who should know better) coughing and sneezing freely into the air without any effort to curb the spread of germs or use tissues, wash their hands etc. and those heroes who come to work dying so they can validate themselves as "indispensable" etc. why would you be conscientious enough to say, "I'm going to do (anything really) to protect others from this illness I/ my child has". It is clear that nobody really cares about anyone else.

In fairness most "sickness" is little more than a snuffle. I know someone who self-isolates with a cold!

Diarrhea and vomiting Im talking about, also if a child has a fever or cannot concentrate because they were up all night coughing.

If its true about that kid in the school being sick for a week, the parents should get into trouble.

There is such an attitude of "someone else's problem" with a lot of people. Until people are told specifically to do something, then they wont bother thinking about .it.

Actually I agree and disagree with this. Everybody should be at least aware if the virus at this stage but the majority of people still aren’t taking it seriously. Most people are ignorant to anything that doesn’t affect them, you can read plenty of it in this thread and it does seem to be a general human trait.

In terms of the parents, I’d say like most parents, you don’t want to think about something potentially severe effecting your child. What will others think etc? And our authority’s are mostly telling us the chances of getting it or spreading in Ireland is low. That’s where the communication strategy “to not cause panic” leads to people interpreting that message as “everything is fine”.

The authorities can’t have their cake (“it’s low risk, it’s grand”) and eat it (“be vigilant”). There is a price to be paid for this “let’s not cause panic” strategy and we won’t know if it’s going to cost us more, until this crisis has passed.

Anyone else secretly hoping that their kids school gets hit with a closure order so you can "self-isolate" - a nice family holiday to the west coast while telling everyone you're cooped up at home would be lovely.
