the whole containment strategies in whole europe are a joke and nothing else. wash your hands, can't hear it anymore.

In Germany, the city Heinsberg, where the first case is from, who still seems to be in a serious condition, was quarantined for a few days. It's all open and flowing again there. Ever heard of an incubation period of 14-28 days?
For containment you should probably use the word management, in the sense that health systems don't go into meltdown with masses of concurrent cases. We don't manage the annual flu, apart from jabs.

Just got Email from Son's Secondary School asking Parents to notify them if any of the students have been in a list of specified areas (incl Northern Italy) in the last 3 weeks.

    Nothing from daughter's Primary School.
There has yet to be a reported case of a child under the age of 10 being infected.

Did it mention the south of Spain ?

No, Northern Italy was the only European place mentioned.

China, South Korea, Japan and Iran were the other places.

I was able to cancel the hotel without cost. Plan on rescheduling the flights to later in the year.

I've also had heart surgery in recent years.
Planning on s Groupon break for a few days instead.

Fair play I'd do the same in your situation. It will put your mind at ease, and holidays can always be booked again at a later date when you can fully enjoy it

So what your saying is, we all need transfusions from 10yr olds?

Don't know, that sounds pretty drastic..

This is one school of thought, another is that the heat will take care of the virus. I think only Algeria is affected so far.

EDIT: Nigeria has been added to the list.
Every country has its own unique characteristics.

Africa is an enormous continent with very low population densities in general.

Some countries are denser than others and obviously cities are a risk. But South/East Asia, India and Europe are at the most risk.

Africa as a continent probably won't be that badly affected.

A guy posting on here who got banned.
Seemingly in hospital for something or other (pics posted by someone else of him with a canula) and had a big long story about seeing a ward or similar with hazmats etc while going for a smoke.
So in other words a dedicated ward likely being setup (not a bad thing)

I think it's obvious at this stage that by the time confirmed cases come to light, it's already rampant, or it will be in about 4-6 weeks if the person was out in the community at all.

All we can do is buy ourselves as much time as possible and hope the summer weather will alleviate the situation in Europe, especially Italy.

    Untrue.

Kids can get the virus, and presumably if symptomatic can spread it on.
Just less kids are getting it \ and less severe doses.

    https://qz.com/1810299/can-kids-get-coronavirus/
As the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently stated, “children with confirmed Covid-19 have generally presented with mild symptoms, and though severe complications…have been reported, they appear to be uncommon.”
“We just don’t understand whether children are getting infected at low rates or just not showing very strong symptoms,” said Marc Lipsitch, head of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics

With all the talk/news seemingly focused on current overall stats, has anyone found any of the following info?

Is there anyone close to working out a cure? Wasn't there some sort of breakthrough in Australia in the early stages of the whole thing? Something like recreating the virus or something similar? What then? What are they doing now? Anyone else working on it?

Also, if you do have the virus, how long does it usually last? How long approximately is it contagious for?
There was talk of a vaccine entering clinical trials in April or so, it would take a year for it to become available.
In Spain they’ve treated one of the coronavirus patient with a HIV treatment and according to the press it was promising.
I can’t post links as I’m newly registered.

The Independent are reporting that the patient is being treated in the Mater hospital. Aka the center of the city, pretty much the most overcrowded, dense hotspot in the entire country.

Can anyone tell me how is this not literally the very last place, like the absolute last possible place, youd want to put a patient with such a disease? Am I missing something here, or is this one of the dumbest decisions you could possibly ever imagine?

Children under 10 have caught the virus, but their symptoms have been mild and none have died.

Now would be a good time to open up the regional A+E's again you would imagine but then again doctors and nurses are stretched to the limit as-is.

They probably need the doctors working between normal patients and coronavirus patients.

Amazing the ability that denial can play in people's reaction to a real threat, not much different to Donald 'no American will die from the Coronavirus' Trump.

The USA now appears to be in the same position now where China was in the middle of January.

The composition of Trump’s team to battle the virus...
Although Grogan and his friends may have a lot to gain from his participation on the task force, it is not clear what expertise he and most of the others serving on the group bring to it.

Of the task force’s 16 members — 17, if you include Vice President Mike Pence, who is heading the effort — only four have any training in science or medicine.

The others mostly hail from the business world, including Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, an investment banker who was sued for asset stripping; Ken Cuccinelli, a lawyer and self-described “opponent of homosexuality” now serving as acting deputy secretary of homeland security; and Christopher Liddell, a former executive at Microsoft and General Motors, who worked with Jared Kushner on the modernization of federal IT systems before directing the country’s response to what may be the biggest public health crisis in over a century.

    https://theintercept.com/2020/02/29/cronyism-and-conflicts-of-interest-in-trumps-coronavirus-task-force/

What could possibly go wrong ?

    !

I think it is the main hospital in the country for infectious diseases I think? I am not sure where else would you expect him to be brought?
A dedicated ward there would make the most sense to me.

This is not correct. Children can also be infected by the virus but often show no symptoms. This is a particular concern as they can pass on the virus unknowingly to those more vulnerable to it. The virus doesn't kill children however, - as far as we know at this early stage.
