Right call to make. We may not avoid it ultimately, but if we sort of take turns at getting sick it may relieve the pressure in the system. There’s some logic in that, I think :D

Ok you first take the day of tomorrow and hand out sweets to all those people arriving on flights from Italy.

    No it wouldn't.

There are trains, boats, buses, cars, walkers crossing from Italy into other European countries pretty much every second of the day. Stopping flights wouldn't make much difference to containment.

Also - what do you do for the Irish citizens in Italy whose flights you've just banned? Leave them hanging around in Italy for an undefined period of time - because of a measure that probably wouldn't even be successful?

Most people travel by plane, that cuts the risk down... slows covid... and yes leave Irish people in Italy or the Irish government hire a private jet and put them in quarantine ... take extreme measures early is the easiest solution

Yes, but I feel better today, cos I'm not constantly checking bbc, and other news sites.

Reporting on every single new case and the bs on social media doesn't help either.

Also stopped watching John Campbell, he has the facts and figures but he projects the absolute worse scenario - too much.

Imagine if RTE/BBC reported on every single car crash...would give you an unrealistic sense of danger.

I'm sorry you mustn't be watching the same John Campbell as me so. He's about as level headed as they come.

Cases reported in Pakistan, Macedonia and Finland
All had links to Italy or Iran

There is now more cases occurring outside China than within

A 2nd in Pakistan now apparently and 17 more cases just now in Italy which brings total to over 400 there. Big jump in Italy today.

The Asian food place I go to lunch sometimes has been a ghost town all week.

Would it normally be busy? Good ole Daily Mail probably contribute to the fall in business.

If Europe had just stopped flights from Italy a week ago containment would have been so much easier... seems so obvious.....

Simplicity is too complicated in this modern neuroticism.

Its finances first then human health.

Does that friend have special needs?

Cheap vodka is 37% alcohol at most mixed with the soap much lower again.:D

    Now, now!

I gave my opinions earlier in the thread. I think what friend meant is ....

Get the empty reusable hand gel bottle.

Fill it 20% with liquid soap, top up with 80% of alcohol. Shake well. 100% hand sanitizer. Voila!

Jayzis I was only passing on a borderline hypochondriacs version.

The important thing is that alcohol is the key for killing viruses, not anti bac gels. The hospitals are full of the alcohol gels.

I'm no expert, and would prefer to imbibe the vodka orally myself, but there ya go.

TLDR - wasting your time with Savlon.

The efficacy of various disinfectants was examined both on viruses in liquid suspension and on viruses dried on surfaces URL="https://www.uptodate.com/contents/coronaviruses/abstract/94"]94[/URL. Human coronaviruses, including CoV-229E and SARS-CoV, as well as several animal coronaviruses (eg, mouse hepatitis virus and transmissible gastroenteritis virus of pigs), were studied. These viruses (both in suspension and dried on surfaces) were very susceptible to 70% ethanol, with reduction of viability by greater than 3 log within seconds URL="https://www.uptodate.com/contents/coronaviruses/abstract/95-97"]95-97[/URL. Likewise, hexachlorophene URL="https://www.uptodate.com/contents/coronaviruses/abstract/98"]98[/URL, 2% glutaraldehyde URL="https://www.uptodate.com/contents/coronaviruses/abstract/95"]95[/URL and 1% povidone-iodine URL="https://www.uptodate.com/contents/coronaviruses/abstract/95,97"]95,97[/URL each produced satisfactory killing. It appears that susceptibility of coronaviruses to 6% sodium hypochlorite (the active agent in bleach) solutions has been variable, but satisfactory killing was achieved with concentrations of 1:40 or higher URL="https://www.uptodate.com/contents/coronaviruses/abstract/96,97"]96,97[/URL. Coronaviruses were not killed by benzalkonium chloride or chlorhexidine unless 70% ethanol was added URL="https://www.uptodate.com/contents/coronaviruses/abstract/95"]95[/URL

I have a copy of a little red book you may be interested in full of fairytales too.

China tried to cover this up. They tried to punish the deceased whistleblower doctor in December by making him confess in writing to being a fear monger so they could prosecute and have been putting out their random narrative creating bingo numbers that no one believes.

    Good job! Heroes
Bruce Aylward, who led an international mission to China to learn about the virus and China’s response, said the specialists did not see evidence that a large number of mild cases of the novel disease called Covid-19 are evading detection.
    https://www.statnews.com/2020/02/25/new-data-from-china-buttress-fears-about-high-coronavirus-fatality-rate-who-expert-says/

The panel of international public health experts who visited China could find absolutely no evidence of a cover up once the gravity of the situation was realized.

But I suppose you know better

    ;-)

The guy from Croatia who has tested positive was at the Atalanta Champions League game in Milano last week.

Nuts that the game in Lyon tonight isn't behind closed doors.

Did you listen to Bruce Leywards interview?
    Sobering stuff.
We haven't a hope of doing half of what they did, nor do we have the specialist equipment they have for respiratory issues nor do we have their experience with SARS.
He said the mortality rate outside China will be higher..

I think an important distinction should be made between the Chinese regime and the Chinese people especially the medicial staff. The regime attempted to bury the story for weeks until the death toll was too high and they couldn't hold back social media reporting (thankfully) and have more than likely lied about the death toll ever since. The Chinese people and the medical staff in particular are heros who have put their lives on the line to save their country and that's not a massive exaggeration.

Personally i think when all this is said and done there will be a massive price to pay for the Chinese regime never mind from the international community but from within their own population.

You can only commend these volunteer nurses.
Who know death is a huge risk as 9 of their fellow work mates met.
We haven't a clue really how bad it is do we.

Yes. It just got seriously ****ed up this afternoon. I am ****ing furious that the game is cancelled. Political. Correctness. Gone. Mad. Taking high profile action, and hitting innocent rugby supporters, just to be seen to be doing something. We are still going to have 5000 Italian fans in Dublin, cramming into the pubs and restaurants, shops, and Guiness Storehouse. So thats all fine and dandy. But letting them into the open air stadium of Lansdowne Road is a health risk too far.
Depressed is not the work. ****ing. ****ing Furious !

Tonight imo will be the last champions league games played this season with a crowd present. Anfields famous home support will be worthless in a few weeks unfortunately as i forsee games played behind closed doors if at all.

I know it doesn't solve that problem, but would there be anything to be said for playing the matches behind closed doors?

    edit, ^there we go

Maybe this has been addressed but what will happen about Saint Patrick's Day? And the tourist season if we get an outbreak here?
