How do they think people from the airport get to their next destination? Some taxi it, some bus it and some are picked up by relatives. That’s a lot of people that the passengers will come in contact with getting from a to b.

I would have hoped that the contingency plans would have discussed the scenario that has happened last night and that the passengers would have been transported to their locations by private, controlled transfer.

    Don’t think that happened though.

They'll probably do it tomorrow! Can't be dealing with this stuff over the weekend.

People don't just become infectious after spending time with a sick person. You need to get sick yourself first.

I don’t understand. I thought some people with the virus were not showing symptoms.

Btw, the woman who was on the plane and posted the notice is very sick. She’s receiving cancer treatment in Russia.

The shocking display of incompetence and lack of any proper plan is not surprising, and is exactly why no one has any faith that if/when the coronavirus comes to Ireland that the HSE will be able to deal with it.

ok. What is the benefit of promoting the belief that the virus was released from a covert bio-weapons lab?

And I have no problem with you speculating about it, but the claims of this being a bio-weapons lab haven't been allowed to die down. Posters aren't coming into the thread, discussing it and then leaving it at that. Instead, they're posting it, again and again. Personally, i find it annoying, and one of the reasons there is a conspiracy forum separate from this forum for these kind of things.

(although I suspect the lack of traffic in the conspiracy theory forum is the reason why it keeps being reintroduced into this thread)

I don’t believe this virus is a bio-weapon. However I do believe it could be a lab virus that got out. You don’t have to be a conspiracy theory loon to think that the idea of a worker in a virus research lab accidentally getting contaminated is a possible explanation for this outbreak. Accidents happen, as as technology advances, the consequences of such accidents will be more severe

What do you want them to prepare for though?

Containment and prevention of the virus. Fairly obvious i would have thought

The logistics of that would be almost impossible.
The window would be less that 24 hours.
    Ban what flights?

There are only about three direct flights between China and Ireland, probably less at this time of year. That would be no more than a handful of flights per week.

For passengers arriving via multi leg flights (like yesterday's Moscow flight) you need to rely on each airport in each previous leg to effectively screen passengers, or have stopped direct flights from affected areas.

I don't believe that is accurate. Apparently this disease is transmisable in the incubation phase

    We have had ZERO cases.
You can’t try to contain something that’s not there.

    Yikes!
Dr on the radio who is in charge of Irelands infectious disease specialist unit in the Mater on the radio right now. He said the plan is that patients with the illness be treated in their local hospital, not a national centre equipped to deal with a highly infectious illness of consequence. He said that the infectious disease specialists were not consulted on this and do not agree with this as best practise. UK are using a dedicated national centre which is best practise.
He also said the patient taken off the plane last night did not come to the national centre in the Mater hospital, which he also didn't agree with. He doesn't know where they went.

He also basically said that communication on what will happen with someone who is infected is completely inadequate at the moment.

He thought that people from the plane should not have been quarantined.
What station or show was this on? Thanks

No but you can have proper plans in place. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

You can be a host and not show symptoms.
Screening is going to do nothing.

I saw that post from that lady last night (my wife knows her) and to be honest, hysterical nonsense.
Now first of all, I have some sympathy for her, she is having a hard time, and is (medically) very vulnerable, but that type on panicked post is plain silly : for instance "Moscow is very close to China" - er, no its not!

Proper precautions should be taken of course, but some of the crap here and in the media is more fueled by racism than by genuine health concerns.

I think the best course for this country is to be proactive and prepared rather than be reactive if or when it occurs.
Unfortunately our health system although modern sometimes does not meet our needs I.e. frequent A/E congestion during the flu season

No mention on RTE lunch time news with regards to last night's flight from Moscow to Dublin.

Jesus. No but you prepare for it. That's what we are talking about. That's what the conversation above was about.

What is your point don't prepare untill we get one.

It was on RTE on the Brendan O'CONNOR show. The Dr was Professor Jack Lambert who heads the infectious disease centre in the Mater.

This level of paranoia reminds me of the Ebola outbreak.

We have had zero cases, zero!
If someone is tested positive, then the get isolated.
    It’s straightforward enough.

I’m putting out an SOS to Beasty, Steve, Axwell or even Niamh@boards.ie to come in and clean up this mess of a thread. The ban hammers need to be coming down thick band fast at this point

The media have people whipped into a frenzy. This is nothing but a strain of flu that no vaccine is available for yet unlike the regular flu shot available ever winter in Ireland. If you are an at risk person due to existing health issues then take some precautions if traveling near China.

I'm in Singapore right now and you would hardly know this is a thing and this is a country at China's doorstep and massive transportation hub.

Ok someone that knows please run me through the steps.

Person A has Coronavirus and is displaying symptoms of coughing. They are in close proximity for 5 hours of Person B, C & D

Person B currently is undergoing treatment that leaves their immune system compromised.

Person C has no medical conditions that they are aware of.

Person D is 70 years old, gets the flu jab annually but apart from arthritis and similar conditions relating to their age, they are in good health.

Does Person A with Coronavirus have the ability to infect any of the other 3 within that 5hour window? If so, who and why?

I want them to report national news.

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/passenger-on-moscow-dublin-flight-is-tested-for-coronavirus-1.4159243%3fmode=amp

"Spokeswomen for the HSE and the Department of Health would not confirm any details relating to the incident. In a statement released on Saturday night, the Department of Health said that as of February 1st, there were no confirmed cases in Ireland. It said it wouldn’t comment or confirm suspected cases or whether response plans to suspected cases had been activated."

Spread like other respiratory illness like common cold or flu
sneezing or coughing, which disperses droplets of body fluids such as saliva or mucus. coughs and sneezes can travel several feet and stay suspended in the air for up to 10 minutes.
droplets can come into direct contact with other people, or can infect those who pick them up by touching surfaces on which the infected droplets land, or touching a surface and then their face.

Maybe RTE are waiting for Medical experts to confirm instead of speculating.

I wonder will headlines be changed to

MAN REMOVED FROM PLANE AFTER CONTRACTING COMMON FLU.

    I doubt they will.
