Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

They've finally posted an exact date! 4th of February guys and gals. Prepare yourselves.

Took a look through the "Guidance for applicants" document and it appears to me that they want this application process to be quick.

According to the document, the IST is to be completed for end of March, ACs to begin in April and they aim to have the merit list passed to the PSNI by August. Meaning PCA and Medical probably starting in September.

I assume that fast tracked people could possibly even be starting Garnerville before the end of the year?

I'm sure there could be delays etc so these timings may not be completely accurate but it would be great if they were.

Good luck to everyone applying, I hope to see you all in Garnerville and on the streets soon!

Finally we got something to be working towards still a long process but thankful we are moving now

Is there much "homework" to do while at college? Does it eat into your free time much?

  • Registered Users Posts: 27 BruceWayne1

Yes. The first 12 weeks are very hard. The reading and paperwork you have to do as well as keep up with the gym requirement is a heavy workload. After that it eases off quite a bit but be prepared to give every waking minute initially. But it is totally worth it

Does anyone know of any websites to practice the aptitude tests that are specific to PSNI? I have purchased courses for garda recruitment but these tests are different. Thanks in advance.

Great news, looking forward to getting stuck in.

Bit nervous about the IST though, I never test well on aptitudes but feel I could really smash the rest of the process. Any tips/tricks that have worked in the past?

    Hi

I always find IST type tests a bit of a hit and miss. That's just my opinion anyway. I practised loads of verbal reasoning and situational judgemental awareness tests for the 2017 campaign and failed. For the 2018 campaign IST i done very little and I passed it. Studying does help but i feel there is a bit of luck involved with those tests. Again that is just my opinion. A good website is www.practiceaptitudetests.com

With regards to the AC I think they are changing it in the 2020 campaign slightly? I'm not 100% sure of that so please double check. I remember reading something about them changing it to the mainland version of the AC. There are many books out there that based around the mainland AC. How2Become are good for these. I've used them when i applied for a mainland force a few years ago. If the AC is the same as the AC from previous years then there are courses you can do. I've never used these so cant comment on them.

    Goodluck!

Avoid anything written by Richard McMunn. His how2become books are for lack of a better word absolute tripe.

They are full of inconsistencies and straight up false statements.

Does anyone know if its likely to be deployed in the district of your choosing once training is complete?

  • Registered Users Posts: 250 ✭✭NeeNaw21

Districts are allocated as per operational demand.

You will get a list of available districts in your induction pack.

You have up to 4 choices. Equally weighted.

There are no guarantees that you’ll get any of your choices though.

Thanks. So is it the case where you are presented with 4 districts where there is operational demand and you get deployed to whichever one of these you choose?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4 Gm9962

You will have a list of all districts available you will then select 4 that you would like to work in but you are not guaranteed to get one of your choices. You could get posted anywhere depending on operational needs.

Understood. And if you don't receive your most ideal district are transfers possible at all?

Anyone know of anyone just choosing one choice or 2 choices in their available districts ? i know it says you can choose up to 4 equal weighing, but do you think thats an incentive to choose 4 so that you will get at least one of your choices ?

As stated... it says “you can choose upto 4 districts”

I am aware of some people who have chosen 1 district and got it.... im also aware of cases that people have chosen 4 districts and not got any of them.

Some districts may also not be available when it comes to that stage.

    Hope this helps

Nope. When we applied we ticked a box saying we are willing to work anywhere in NI. So it's tough luck

I'm on my second try, failed first one at IST by 5 marks and now I'm currently at the PCA stage. I applied again for 2020 just as a backup, hopefully I don't need it.

Have you tips for the IST stage?

Just find as many situational judgement and verbal reasoning questions online and just keep practicing. I just got the pass mark for the IST in the last campaign so progressed by the skin of my teeth. Also there are some people that run classes to help with the IST, I didn't use any of them so can't comment on how helpful they are.

It may take a couple of days

  • Registered Users Posts: 40 MUFC1

I have applied twice, 1st time done the classes and failed the IST.. 2018 done it again and passed, just waiting on my medical now, situational judgement I found easy enough, verbal reason tough as it can come down to one word to what your answer should be.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28 Martykel3

Is there anywhere that does private coaching for the IST test?

I have Applied roughly 6times now and I struggle with it. The 2018 campaign I missed the pass mark by 1 which was heartbreaking.

Would just love some guidance to help me through the IST stage.

Many from the ROI apply? I’m not gonna wait for AGS to launch a recruitment further on this year. I’ve applied to PSNI yesterday, still no confirmation, is this normal?

How can anyone live on AGS training pay? By design their payscales are aimed at young people who are still at home and do not have mortgages, families etc

Same as myself cian this recruitment for psni seems much more appealing if I'm honest

Applying from ROI - applied twice over the past 4 or 5 years failing the IST by one mark the last time.
I've gone for AGS 3 or 4 times aswell - again not passing numerical reasoning by only a few marks each time although I am getting closer to passing.

I genuinely think I just panic in exam situations - always do fine in the pre tests and online tests but once I get into a hall I freeze.

Found the PSNI testing a lot more challenging than AGS but PSNI is a way more attractive position imo.

Has anyone any tips or advice for when I go to do the PSNI IST again?

I think this will be my last time applying, there is only so many times you can take reading that you haven't been successful.
