I’ve a manual mk5 and I’m very much over changing gears manually at this stage. Wouldn’t even consider a manual when I do upgrade to a newer GTi or R.

Agreed. Had a few GTIs over the years and the last one was a DSG. I'm more into comfort and space now than 0-60 and wouldn't dream of going back to manual no matter what make/model.

The dsg will be faster going the 0-60 too even if you do want to do them.

I think the dsg/manual thing is about where you live & how you do most of your driving, if you're in the city & 90% of the drive is in traffic & junctions, dsg all the way. If you lived semi rural or did mostly long drives manual is the way to go. I'm in Dublin & have my dsg 6 years & if I had a manual I'd have changed car by now, I'd never had an auto before but I'd find it hard to go back to manual & I'm only 29.

I'm in the country mostly, last car was DSG and so is current R.
That said I would have 'settled' for manual but always sought DSG models.
It's childish but I never get sick of changing gears with the paddles :D

It's a hard one to choose between in a mk7, with adaptive cruise they are both very good to drive on a long relaxing cruise. I like the involvement of the manual. I am in a rural area and rarely drive in cities. My work is on the outskirts of Limerick city so I've very little traffic to contend with.

I drove a DSG R before and found it a bit disconnected to drive even though they are blisteringly fast.
My 2c try both and see what you prefer.

I’m rural and do a lot of long drives with some traffic on my commute mon to fri I’d still want dsg. I do have back problems too and the clutching is getting very tiresome.

DSG is personal preference, each to their own really.

I live and work in Dublin, I work shifts so always drive off peak hours but there's still a fair bit of traffic. I drive mostly back roads or dual carriageway but still enjoy the DSG, especially with ACC. Best thing about a dual clutch is that whether you're in an econobox Golf or a Ferrari the benefit is always there.

I don't know if it's because of the dual clutch or down to VW's software but I think there's a good amount of control with manual shifts, you seem to have a lot of control within redline and stalling points. Some cars I've driven were a bit mushy with manual shift points, it also helps the DSG is millisecond quick so it changes as you want it rather than feeling like a but press to tell a computer to do it eventually.

Saw this lovely R today, wasn't a fan of black Prets before when I saw them on a black R but they look well against the grey.

Las be careful adjusting Xenon headlights under the bonnet without first putting the lights into learning mode (neutral) with VCDS ,otherwise you could banjax the motors.

    Would love gloss black prets.

The manual has ACC it's not a DSG exclusive, it's not until your sub 40km/ph you need to change gear. I'm in and out of autos 20yrs+, I do a bit of city but not enough to make me wish I had an automatic. The dsg will never as much fun on the twistys. I'd think it's fair if to say if you spend over 50% of your life in traffic jams well then it's DSG all the way, outside of that save your money and enjoy the back roads.

I used to be all for manual but had a spin in a golf with dsg. My last 2 cars have been dsg, I don't think I could go back to manual.

I took a dsg Gti over the Alps a couple of years ago. Was perfect

I've done the manual hot hatch twice, i decided my next car would be auto no matter what, have taken the R over all kinds of terrain in all conditions and i''ve never wished it was manual.

For commuting DSG with ACC/Lane assist is perfect, i've often drove the all the way to the lights at the long mile road/naas road interchange without touching a pedal once.

It's all subjective. I don't think you can say the DSG will "never be as fun" when it completely depends on what a particular person prefers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,027 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

There something special when it all come together perfectly in the manual you just don't get that feeling in the DSG, guess I'm just bored of automatics I've been in them so long. Autos for a cruiser which I don't think the golf is.
Manual is no more anyway, thanks Greta.

Yep driven 2 DSGs before, so quick n snappy to change, you're in 4th before you'd be in 2nd nearly in a manual. So they feel faster for everyday driving. Just not a fan of more effort than I have to put in life. But sure thats why there is choice in life. Think more and more people are realising autos are easier to drive. There is definitely a higher demand now and resales are higher than manuals, so the little extra being spent isn't being lost. Just in the last year or 2 driving around local areas (or just not motorways) Im getting sick of constantly changing gears multiple multiple times per journey.

DSG is great, the manual is more involving for the driver... plus the autobox is 23KG heavier than the manual as far as I remember...

Does anyone know is it possible to enable traffic sign recognition on a VW Golf GTI 2018 it has a camera and has high beam assist and collision avoidance. But not sure is there a different type camera used by cars with Traffic sign Recognition.

Does it have lane assist ? There are 2 types of cameras one for standard headlight assist HBA and then another for full DLA and lane assist - this is the type of camera needed for traffic sign recognition - if you have that it can be enabled, i enabled it on the R.

No I don’t have lane assist and only have standard headlight assist. So looks like I am out of luck must only have the standard camera.

Yeah the DLA is a very rare option, i never use lane assist, but i DLA is unreal and the traffic sign recognition has come in handy a few times.

I drove another boardsies 420d with ZF gearbox, it was my first autobox experience since golf mk2 auto. Now ZF gearbox is said to be one of the best auto boxes, so it was perfect opportunity to experience it.
So it's great for normal driving, really nice and auto did got a lot better since last time drove one. Saying that, on twisty roads it's still not the same and you feel that pause when it tries think, if it needs to change a gear or put on toast.
I really believe dsg faster in straight line, but I am a bit skeptical about twisty driving.
Again, saying that, I think I am mature enough now for auto. Hot hatch still would be more fun with manual, but if I will go with something more premium or just normal, then auto all the way.

A 3 or 4 series a manual wouldn't bother me once you get to the likes of a 5 series it has to be an auto.

Took off in second from a standstill this evening and had broke the motorway speed limit without changing to 3rd. Who needs a DSG when you've got second gear :)
I was going to come on and ask about removing the rev limiter...

The only thing was, I had forgotten to put it in sport mode when you drove it. I'd say give it one more chance but try it in sport or sport +
