Was working at the RDS today, there was a 192 red golf R with black prets in the car park. It also had black door handles, didn't know that was a thing.

Probably either replaced them with OEM black ones or wrapped them.

Looking to buy a 172/181 etc GTD auto. There’s close to zero for a long time now . There’s one 191 I see in Kerry which I’d want but the price is stupid! €44k for a 191

Just spotted that Daltons have a very nice grey 172 MK7.5 GTD coming into stock next week. Its a manual but most likely worth a look.

I thought yours was a manual hooch...should have just said there's a mans car coming into Daltons:D

    Thanks guys :)
This evening checked AVG MPG, it showed 9.9L..my commute is 18km one way. I think it's not to bad for heavy traffic.

Could someone confirm regarding DSG box.. when stationary at traffic light do you leave it in D with auto hold on or it's in P?
    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,147 ✭✭✭blingrhino

never in p . thats why you have auto hold.

D with auto hold on will keep the car stationery until you touch the accelerator again.

When stopped lights I just leave it in D with auto hold and switch to Race mode...

Howdy folks, Plain aul 1.4 TSI owner here. Think of finally upgrading to the GTD or GTI club in February. I’m looking at getting a 181+ and manual. Commute approx 350-400km so I'm not sure which one would be best. My budget is 30k so it probably rules out a GTI right?

If I went with a GTD, anything to major to look out for?

    Thanks!

350-400km per week is not huge mileage. You would get away with running GTi with that weekly mileage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,902 ✭✭✭hooch-85

Yeah I agree. You'll easily get 400kms for €50/55 in a GTi provided your not city driving all the time.
If you can stomach that go for the petrol.

I have a GTI so am probably a bit biased but I would say really try get a GTI. A GTD is not really in the same league at all. At 30K you may struggle to get a 181 GTI but you wouldn't be far off. Even if you got a non Performance Pack GTI I would take that over the GTD any day. For the performance they deliver they aren't that heavy on fuel.

I'm averaging about the same mileage as you with a PP manual GTi. FWIW I'm very pleased with the car, it's the consummate all rounder yet still delivers as a performance car when asked.

If you can't get a 181 in your preferred spec for that price, would you consider a 2017 7.5?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,025 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

If it's a handy commute you'll easily knock 40mpg out of a mk7.5 in sport mode if not leathering it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,902 ✭✭✭hooch-85

I'm knocking 32mpg average out of a manual R. 36-38 on a long run cruising. I'm not noticing a massive difference in fuel consumption compared to my GTD. GTi will be better again.

Yes definitely. Although these are kind of rare from what I see looking them up on the internet? Would it be around 30k for one of these?

I really doubt you will get 2018 one for 30k.

You better off getting older GTI, then any GTD. From what other people saying, there is not much mpg difference between two, but massive smiles per miles difference.
You millage is not that high and if you doing it mostly motorway and N roads then mpg will definitely be fine. I drive 1.8 turbo 192hp petrol with 500km per week and averaging about 7l/100km without driving like a granny. Modern petrol engines got a lot better in mpg department and a lot of GTI owners can give you their figures.

I'd definitely consider a 172, as long as mileage is reasonable you won't know the difference between a 172 and a 181. I imagine most GTIs would be well looked after, they were a €40-45k car after all and the standard spec is very good so you won't be disappointed with whatever you get.

Just watch out for late reg Mk7 or lower spec UK imports. It wasn't until 2019 that the UK spec was brought in line with Irish spec but I can't imagine there would be too many.

I'm nearly finished an experiment I've done...for science.

I'm doing 300-350km a week so slightly less mileage but I drove my 161 GTI PP very "sensibly" since last fill. I am currently on 630km and have about 50km left in the tank. I'm on R roads mostly. So it is easy enough to get decent fuel economy out of them!

...but that's not why I bought it and I can't wait for this experiment to be over :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 612 ✭✭✭theintern

I average about 400 or so a week on a GTI. My commute is through some city traffic and usually averages about 31 on that run. Overall I've averaged 34.0mpg for the last 12,000km. Best tank was 38.2mpg. That's tracked through Fuelly and I'm religious about marking down all my fill ups.

I think either you have a light foot hooch, or I have a heavy one, but your figures for the R sound very good! Temptingly good...

Apparently VW are recalling Hooches R for closer inspection :D either that or he's really bought a kitted 1.6.

GTI in for its first service while I've had it. I asked them to look at a potential coolant leak.

Thermostat is gone and needs to be replaced. Was quoting me 580 until I reminded him it's still under warranty from when I bought it, I think it should be covered but waiting to get confirmation.

Seems from reading online and chatting to JoeA3 that it's common enough to happen. Warranty is out in 2 months so I'll be happy it was caught now. There was no coolant light or any noticeable pools on the ground or anything so worth keeping an eye on.
