    Don't see how Spoons is comparable to the Porterhouse at all.
    They're superpubs with centrally managed branding and an emphasis on the food offer.

    haha jesus I've never noticed them other than for drinks promos... I would only use it on a week-night and must have just missed european fixtures somehow... nevermind so.

    What's the criac like in the one on Abbey street ?

    Will be in Dublin for a gig Saturday night and will have an hour or so to burn before the rest of the lads arrive.

    Is it a decent spot to pop in for a few pints on your own or am I better heading off somewhere else and coming back with the lads

    It's big, it's busy, it's a typical Spoons.

    Unfortunately they haven't managed to get the toilet onto the app yet, so you still need to get up from time to time.

    I wish they had an emphasis on food. The grub in there is woejus and has been for quite awhile now. The beer is still well ahead of Wetherspoons though thankfully.

    A mate of mine worked as a bouncer in the Silver Penny, had a big wound on his face the other day. It's a very rough pub alright.

    Not sure how realistic these figures and timelines are - but it was in today's Indo...
    BRITISH pub group Wetherspoons is targeting cities including Dublin and Galway as part of a £200m (€238m) plan to open between 50 and 60 new outlets over the next four years.

    You know they operate in the UK as well? :) The Irish papers look to have more or less reprinted in full a press release primarily intended for a UK audience.

    Yeah but we need 50 new Wetherspoons more than they do :)

    I cant read the article because paywall.

    But it seems like they want to 'colonize' the Republic with wetherspoons in every town. I wonder what this will mean for the local pubs and with it the Trad music scene (which is not really a big thing in Dublin but out west it's a different story).

    I mean of course Diageo should allow locals to charge less for their pints, it's not a one-way street. But still.

    I doubt that. It looks like they're mostly going to be a lot poorer in the near future. A provider of low-cost treats for people of limited means will be much in demand (in case anyone was in any doubt as to why Timbo is so in favour of The UK leaving the EU).

    That's not going to happen.

    The 200 additional figure is for the entire chain, the bulk of which is in the UK. If they get to 20 in Ireland within five years I'd be surprised.

    They're here 5 and a half years, and have all of 7 open + 4 in some stage of progress (that we're aware of - but there won't be many more hidden ones)

    Carlow has had plenty of issues.
    They had a relaunch recently and dropped prices, as it had gotten a pretty bad name.
    I haven't been in since the relaunch but seemingly it's cleaned it's act up a bit.

    How is carlow doing now?

    Was in it over the summer with the good lady wife

    Was surprised how empty and quiet it was for a sat night.

    Nearly hoping there would be background music as the silence was a bit awkward.

    Group of lonely sad looking 40 + types at bar

    Then a crowd of college students came in all at once, had double shots and cocktails and left.

    Wife was not impressed. Food was only ok. Pizza was very poor considering it was a sit down venue.

    I live near blessington and wouldn’t be rushing back.

    Seems to be just a generic press release saying that they plan 60 in the UK and Ireland might get one or two more out of that figure. Opening 60 over 4 years seems ambitious, thats more than 1 new pub a month. I'd think hey would need more than 15 fit out teams to be over lapping each other to achieve something like that. Its probably just Tim Martin bigging things up in the hope of selling more shares.

    Hmmm isn't bullsh*tting potential investors supposed to be illegal? Or does he think wild west post-brexit deregulation of everything applies already?

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

    I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

    I couldn't really tell you as i haven't been back in. I get out so infrequently (once a month at best !), that I prefer to go to a decent boozer when I do manage to go out for a few.

    I do know that they've barred a lot of the more troublesome crowd and have changed things up on the food front and seemingly it has improved. Having saying that, you'd still notice people that work on Tullow street having their lunch in Tullys or Brooks rather than JDW.

    I'd drive past it most evenings on my way home from work and it looks pretty empty inside.

    Personally I'd be happy to use it as a starting point on a night out, but none of my mates are interested. It's struggling to shake the bad rep it got when it first opened.

    My only problem with Da Spoons is the low class types it attracts, a lot of their cask ales are delicious, pity really that its not all ales as the gougers tend to be lager drinkers.

    Was in the on on Abbey Street for a pint last weekend. Awful. It was so bright with all of the lights on and the lack of music made it feel so weird. Won't be going back.

    100% .....it would get rid of the trash....even when the casks are the lowest cost drink in spoons it still doesnt get purchased by them.

    I spent two hours there on a Friday night in November.

    Large, busy, but not in any way rough.

    Just for clarity sake I was pm'd on my statement.

    Profits are down across the board in Witherspoon even with revenue up.

    As I said they are losing money. The spin thrown at it is spin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,764 ✭✭✭✭Muahahaha

    Just looking at the last 5 years on their share price, it has doubled in value from a low in 2015 so Id say investors are happy enough atm

    Here is the profit before tax and exceptional items:

    2000 = 36m
    2005 = 47m
    2010 = 71m
    2015 = 77.8m

    2016 = 80.6m
    2017 = 102.8m
    2018 = 107.25
    2019 = 102.46

    They are not "losing money".

    Their profit growth has slowed down.

    Profits have fallen slightly, yes, as costs have been rising.
