What is the chance of getting seats / a table at 9pm on Friday?

    10pm Friday?

We got seats, the pub was busy.

Upstairs bar was order by app only, no cash or cards.

Double Jameson and mixer great value at 5.80.

Even better at 5.00 in Blackrock.

I like the app but it's a bit weird to make it app only, there's plenty of people who don't want an app just for the only time they're going into a pub.

It seems a bit of an anomaly to have a wetherspoons in such a prime A location with some of the dearest property values and highest earning workers in the country. But then again there are also plenty of lower workers in that neighbourhood who will certainly enjoy a good spoons.

You don’t have to be poor to enjoy spoons?

Those high-earning workers failed to make the last two restaurants on the site viable so it seems obvious that a change of tack was needed.

Be interesting to see how much a pint of Punk will be compared to what BrewDog will be selling it for in their new location around the corner.

    I'm guessing €6.70.

A soulless pub for a soulless area. It will fit in well with press ups new offering down the road.

HQ was never exactly brimming with character.

Must say Im surprised a bit at the location. 5.5m was the guide price for that premises though they might have gotten it for less given how other businesses have struggled there. It can be a bit of a dead area at night time so I wouldnt expect it to be that busy later in the evenings. I cant really see people attending Swan Lake in the Grand Canal Theatre popping in to Spoons for food and to get loaded up before the show.

Either way looks like they are back in proper expansion mode again as it was only about 18 months back Tim Martin said they were no longer looking for more Irish premises and now hes gone and bought a nightclub in Galway and the Hanover venue in the last few months. Waterford and Camden St due to open in the coming months too.

I think Abbey Street has shown that rules which would apply to a normal pub don't apply to Wetherspoon. It will get its crowd, from somewhere.

What is the progress like on the Waterford pub?

Abbey street has a lot of traffic at all times of the day. It's in the middle of town.

Grand canal area is mostly for (generally higher-earning) workers, though there are a couple callcenters in the area with lower workers who would definitely enjoy a spoons. Those won't be there late at night or in the weekend though. The happy few that can afford to live in the area are usually very affluent, why would they go to a rowdy spoons rather than a nice hip south dublin bar?

Could any Spoons in Ireland be described as 'rowdy' ?

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

The one in Belfast sometimes is.

The ideal of spoons is probably the best you could get....almost pub heaven. Think about it, lot's of flavoursome ales & IPAs, (don't know bout their shots , I assume good as well) at basically half price or less. Food aplenty (up to what time?).
No TV (just conversation, maybe a sing sing?).
People on here are saying the food is poor. I've only got breakfast s , burger type meals and fish and they've been fine.
Racist of me I know but will the Irish manage to **** it up . Already I hear a few TV's have crept in.

Ah in fairness it's a long way from pub heaven for most but it serves a purpose and is good at what it does.

They probably won't. They didn't go to the last two hip south Dublin bars on the site either, and nobody else did. But other people will go. If you want to make it about income (and I don't think it is) you have Irishtown and the working class neighbourhoods between Pearse Street and the south quays in the catchment area.

Carlow has had plenty of issues.
They had a relaunch recently and dropped prices, as it had gotten a pretty bad name.
I haven't been in since the relaunch but seemingly it's cleaned it's act up a bit.

I thought they would increase prices, (maybe that is what you meant to say?)

No, they dropped prices to get more people through the door, and barred the troublesome crowd. Prices didn't drop vastly, but did drop. They made some changes to the menu also.

As I said, I haven't been back since the relaunch as the crowd is very young (mostly 18-21), so can't say how it's affected their sales / atmos.

TBH, as much as i had been looking forward to it opening, it just reminds me of any number of sh1t stags i've been on in the UK.

£4 over here v £5.50 in the Brewdog bar 2mins down the road. Almost more punk IPA t-shirts on staff in spoons then that bar

What is pub heaven for most hots? Pints at 6 euro and no food, big TV's showing English foot ball or blasting music so you drink more.? Please enlighten us.:)

I'm not sure why blasting music would make you drink more?

What you've described isn't what "most" people want I would imagine. Even people who want something with no TVs/music would generally want something less sterile. Lots of people don't want the smell of food as you're sitting having a pint. Or want some sort of background music at least. Or /do/ want sport on tvs...

Spoons is arguably the best at what it does (although I'd say something like the porterhouse is just a better version of it), but it's hardly pub heaven.

Don't see how Spoons is comparable to the Porterhouse at all. The latter has sport/music, quality food, a range of its own beers and isn't cheap.

No TVs in porterhouse central is there? Similarities were decent range of beers, food, music low enough to allow talking... But fair, it's a level above in terms of cost and quality.
