N17: The dangerous Lisduff crossroads on the N17 where several people have been killed is to be rebuilt into a grade separated junction. This means 2 GSJs within 1km on the N17 at Claremorris, a bit unnecessary for a small town IMO.
So the junction is dangerous, and several people have been killed, but a much safer alternative is not justified? And no, a compact GSJ for this junction is not excessive, if you knew the junction at all, which I'm guessing you don't. I do - I travel it regularly and I was just thinking to myself recently that a compact GSJ is exactly what's needed there.

    In other news:
A contract has now been signed for a total upgrade of the N59 on a 5 kilometre section east of Maam Cross. Work is scheduled to begin in the New Year.

The total upgrade of 5 kilometres of the N59 at Maam Cross is seen as a significant step forward in bringing the main road from Galway to Clifden to a new level of development.
    ...
The contract for the work has been awarded to Clare Civil Engineering.
    ...
A spokesperson for Galway County Council said that the actual road construction will begin early in the New Year.
    ...
Traffic management plans are also being put in place and the work will go on for 18 months.

I said I thought another GSJ is excessive, because the existing N60 junction should have sufficient capacity for all traffic accessing Claremorris from the N17. It's the junction I use myself when travelling from Westport to the M17/M18. It never seems particularly busy, let alone congested.

When I heard of the Lisduff project, I had assumed the crossroads would be eliminated and a bridge provided across the N17 for local access. This would be the best option from a road safety point of view. The project as proposed is more substantial than I had expected and I'm not sure it's necessary to provide a GSJ rather than just a bridge.

I would like to see at least some the remaining at-grade junctions on the Claremorris and Knock bypasses closed or bridged too - there are way too many of them. It will have to be done if the road is ever upgraded to 2+2.

When I heard of the Lisduff project, I had assumed the crossroads would be eliminated and a bridge provided across the N17 for local access.
Claremorris is quite a long town and limiting access to the current N60 junction only would mean a long traverse for people wanting to access the southern end of the town and its hinterland.
the existing N60 junction ... [is] the junction I use myself when travelling from Westport to the M17/M18.
When you are travelling in the opposite direction - from the M17 to Westport - you cannot fail to notice the number of cars heading into Claremorris on the southern side at Lisduff.
I had assumed the crossroads would be eliminated and a bridge provided across the N17 for local access. This would be the best option from a road safety point of view.

What is a compact GSJ only a bridge with trimmings? What would be the difference in price between building a bridge, and adding on the extras to make the GSJ? AFAIK, it's the bridge structure itself that is by far the most expensive part, so if you concede that a bridge is needed, which you do, then the accessibility provided by a compact GSJ is worth the extra amount IMO. It's like the debate about building a wide single-lane road or a dual carriageway - the price difference is not much for massive increases in both functionality and safety. Build it once and build it right.

What they are effectively doing is creating two junctions at Claremorris - Claremorris South and Claremorris North.
I would like to see at least some the remaining at-grade junctions on the Claremorris and Knock bypasses closed or bridged too - there are way too many of them. It will have to be done if the road is ever upgraded to 2+2.
    Agreed.

I note with interest that the bridge on the N17 at Lisduff is specced with a "clearance envelope for future proposed N17 Type 2 dual carraigeway". Fantastic to see that.

While it's positive to see this mentioned, I wouldn't read too much into it. That road is ridiculously wide as it is, even if the bridge was built to suit the existing road, it would probably still be wide enough for a 2+2 underneath.

signs up stating n60 realignment at Lagnamuck starting 21st of Jan until the end of 2019.

It will be a major rush to get this completed by Xmas I'd say. Finding it hard to believe this stretch could take 12 months to complete, is it much more than 600yds..? I know there were flood works to carry out but it feels like it is moving at a snails pace.. The residents of Balla must be delighted though, they've got some of the widest footpaths and cycle lanes I've ever seen..!!

It's about 1500 yards but you're right to say it seems to be progressing very slowly for such a short scheme. I can only imagine it's because it's online, and because of the amount of fill required to raise the level of the road.

I shudder to think how long the Heathlawn scheme on the other side of Balla will take. That's nearly 3 times longer and all online. It could bring huge disruption to the N60 for the best part of 2 years. (Still great it's being done though!)

Yes, you're right it's fantastic so many road schemes are being progressed in the west at long last. It just feels there are more efficient ways of completing these schemes. Incentives to finish ahead of schedule, works occurring on a shift basis, especially during summertime hours. Heathlawn would be ideal for this, certain parts would not affect a huge number of residents.
Roll on the manulla upgrade as well..

Yards? Ok grandpa. 1500 metres and thank you.

I agree with the rest of the post though, progress is progress I suppose, no matter how slow.

  • Registered Users Posts: 749 ✭✭✭DumbBrunette

1400 metres actually. And if you were paying attention you'd see that I was using yards as a courtesy to the previous poster who referred to yards in his post.

As a golfer, yards is a perfectly understandable measurement for me which is why I estimated distance this way. Here's a tip for you, not everything that was around pre millennial snowflake life was wrong..

I mentioned the same about the N2 works around Emyvale a few months ago, it's a short and fairly straight forward realignment but they've been on site 18 months now and still not done

Agreed, although I think they both merit doing the Waterdyke section is like something you’d expect on a local road, let alone a road that takes so many HGVs.

I see they have started cutting those huge Tree's where the road is very narrow south of Farahy, I wonder are they going to upgrade this piece too as the land is purchased with year's..

N60: Tiny Lagnamuck scheme nearly complete.

Heard some discussion on local radio about this scheme recently. People were questioning the need to have such wide footpaths. They do appear to be nearly the same as the road width in spots..!!!

Once assume it's going to be footpaths and a cycle lane. The huge amount of back fill probably took the most time.

The next section of road upgrade around balla won't need as much fill.

The N17 Milltown realignment is badly needed, it's the last really brutal bit of the N17 in Galway or Mayo.

Couldn't find the detail on their site but if it's remove the narrow windy stretch just before Mooncoin on the Carrick side that would be great.

I see this ties into the infamous Piltown bypass.
Given that it will likely be upgraded at some point to 2+2 (and, I believe one of the junctions on it is to be upgraded soon), will this short realignment be 2+2 or just standard SC?

Design completed for the N73 Clogher Cross-Waterdyke realignment, but its awaiting TII approval.

These 2 N73 schemes (along with the Annakisha South realignment) are desperately needed

Isn’t that the Annakisha one? I do often mix them up but I did see that work while driving the N73 at the weekend

I believe the Annakisha one is close to construction but the other one to the east is some time away yet
