So glad so many of you saw snow, knowing how much it means to you!

Dry out here. Does not feel quite as cold but I think that that is that I am getting acclimatised ; the first cold day after mild weeks was a shock !

Good covering of snow in Monasterevin.

Upside - Dogs loving rolling around in it, their first time to see snow.

Downside - Dogs need a bath.

Roads and grass fully covered around Mountmellick and Emo. Roundabouts already lethal even with brand new 3 peaks tyres.
Will be plenty of accidents with the way most motorists maintain their cars.
Stopped snowing here now but lawns completely covered and driveway too until driven on.

Reminds me of when I lived in Orkney where it snows every year, watching my hens emerge into deep snow and looking down in horror when their feet went missing..

rain stopped here now but driveway covered in water again, will have to dig another shore to release more water tomorrow. With all the rain over the past 2 months, it doesn't take much for the place to flood again.

Very heavy rain in Cork City for most of the evening - still raining now, it’s a truly cold, miserable winters night :-)

Rain has picked up again in D14 after a lull, temp at 4.6c now down from 5.8c in earlier spell of rain.

It was yes. About at hour ago it was 1c at Naas and 4c at Kill Village. Maybe 3 or 4km between the two.

Just drove the M7 from Portlaoise to Tallaght. Snowing in Portlaoise with sticking on the grass around J16. Sleet up to J13 then rain the rest of the way. Temperatures rose from 1c at Portlaoise to 3c at J14 to 6c at J3 and back to 5c in Tallaght (Car thermometer) 3pm to 4pm roughly

Done the reverse of this journey between say 8.15pm and 9.30pm. Very interesting drive regarding weather:
Tallaght to Naas North was 5c to 4c all the way then around the Naas bypass it dropped to 2c by Naas south. Towards Newbridge it got quite foggy and going onto the Curragh temperatures dropped to 1c.

Around Kildare village exit the first settled snow appeared and from J14 Monasterevin to past Portlaoise there is a thick covering - peaking around 2in or 3in (estimated) around J16 Portlaoise north - a winter wonderland with trees covered too! Exiting J17 - old Cork Rd exit and after around 4 miles down the road there the lying snow dissipated.

Abbeyleix and Durrow have no lying snow - just some on parked cars and the odd roof. The temperature on the car remained at 1c all the way from the Curragh. Currently 1.1c here, light fog and looking at the radar we still might get a chance of further light snow.

      1.8/-1 in Arklow
      Sleet falling at the moment

      POUNDED with Snow:D:D

This turned out reasonably accurate RE geographic centre of the snowfall - less so on volume. Was this GFS?

    • Registered Users Posts: 1,499 ✭✭✭Hooter23

Wind gusts even stronger now Galway...strange as the forecast just mentions becoming "breezy" its more than breezy anyway:rolleyes:

Very akin to what happened in December 2017

If there is any chance of lower level snow well I think danno in Durrow will be the sweet spot.

So it turned out Portlaoise was the "sweet spot"??
You had the right county at least!

Raining in Carlow town now after a good fall or snow earlier today

    • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 16,738 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

back to pouring rain again after easing off earlier. I'd say at least 15mm of rain has fallen here today.

Rain is torrential all evening in Cork.
If this keeps up flooding is more than likely!!
Nice to see some snow in midland areas today

The blob of cold across the midlands and south-east has been slowly moving south-westwards, much milder north and east of this blob. Still 7C here at Dunshaughlin with rain powering down.

Lashing rain in cork city still. Heavy showers all day. Januarysnowstor is right about flooding, this mornings showers left a lot of big puddles everywhere that wasn’t draining due to blocked drained with leaves and little to no evaporation.

Sleet here in Durrow again since 10.30pm. Surprising that considering dewpoints are close to 0c and air temps are just around 1c. There must be milder air aloft. ENE breeze.

the milder air from the NE probably starting to filter through.

Some wild swings of temperature around Edenderry, I think that was about as far northeast as the cold air and snow got?

    • Registered Users Posts: 8,913 ✭✭✭Danno

I wonder would this be a good representation of the area that got lying snow this afternoon/evening? (Under 200m ASL)

      495296.png

Basically the upper river Barrow basin.

Yes, feeling very mild compared to earlier now that the Easterly flow has anchored in more. Can anyone confirm if there's still lying snow in places?
