Hearing that some of these riffs have been around for potentially 20+ years and given that the band haven't really evolved their sound much over the years explains a lot I think.

Seen them at Rock Werchter, it was incredible.

Also lucky enough to have been at the SFX show back in 2001 - Recording of show can be found here https://tooldriveproject.net/Details/?ID=629

Nice one. I was at the SFX gig too, I could have sworn it was in the 90s but there you go. The visuals on stage were amazing.

And also was at Toolfest in Kildare way back when. Never so glad to have a headliner (Ozzy) cancel on the day of the show !:)

Anyone else order the CD from WOWHD and are still waiting? I pre-ordered it on Aug 14th and got a shipping notice at the end of the month but no sign as yet :(

Mine arrived today (US postal address), I got stung for 20 Euro duty and handling charge, wife wasn't too impressed :). It better be worth it, still haven't taken it out of the packaging....

Exact bloody same! Import tax of €8.68 and An Post charged €10 on top of it, thieving gits. I was under the impression originally it was being shipped from Holland, not the US.

I downloaded a torrent of it when it came out. Gas, isn't it - buy the album and wait 3 weeks for it, or download it illegally on the day of release (even prior to release sometimes). Anyway, I've been listening to it pretty much every day for the last 3 weeks and it's pretty excellent. The only song that isn't doing much for me is 7empest, but I agree with other comments that Pneuma is especially good.

The drums are just insane. Love it. You'd almost be in a trance listening to the album. Even the wife and kids are intrigued and this would not normally be the kind of thing on their playlists.

Love the new album, favourite tracks are Pneuma, Descending and 7empest.

Funny that you mention Eminem, upon first hearing the album I thought there were parts of 7empest where Maynard sounds very like him. Like the passage that begins "Calm as cookies and cream…" and ends with "…state of serenity". Maybe they were listening to some Eminem records in the creation process :D. Like Passenger said, the song is like a prog-pilgrimage, similar somewhat to what Steven Wilson could create but in metal.

Saw them in Zurich on their recent European tour and it was amazing. The Pot, Forty Six & Two, Jambi and the two new tracks were great to experience live, along with that stage setup and visuals they had for moments like the guitar solo at the end of Descending, never seen anything like it.

I think I may have listened to Fear Inoculum maybe 20 times through now (Not obsessive, I've just left the CD in the car and never changed it) and I have to say there is some delicious layering going on here.

I know people who are far bigger Tool fans than me and blasted through a torrernted version on their laptop speakers once and dismissed is as "nothing new" and meh.

Listen, this album is far from perfection. And when you're hitting the 13 year mark, "worth the wait" goes out the window. You have make peace with that. Or not. Whichever.

But here it is. This is an absolutely fantastic album that literally no other band could have put out. It drags in parts and explodes beautifully in others. It's NEW TOOL! It's old Tool. It's very Tool.

When Pneuma finally breaks properly at the end it marks one of the most rewarding moments in music ... ever. Up there with the end of Paranoid Android or Three Days BY Jane's Addiction.

7empest is a brick sh1thouse epic. No doubt about it.

Yeah, I guess I love it.

Couldnt have put that any better myself. It's nothing new, but there's parts of this album that reflect Tool at their very, very best. Each time I listen I get spine tingling moments and as you said, there's literally no other band (maybe in history) that could put out an album quite like this.

Album of the past few years, for me, and maybe for this entire decade.

P.S that bit in Pneuma where the guitar cuts across the bass riff at 4.00 and then into the vocal part is one of the best things I've ever heard from anyone. Big statement but I stand by it.

There's no way to not sound pretentious when I say this but sher lookitt, it's the Tool thread, but I'm surprised by the amount of Tool fans I know putting up Facebook reviews of it before they'd even got through the whole thing.

It's a massive yoke full of nooks and crannies. I've only felt like I've really had a good look around it now finally.

I think maybe people are conditioned now to not give albums a proper listen. Tool albums need to be absorbed and digested over time. i still listen to 10,000 Days and hear new stuff that I didn't hear before, so I'm not sure how people could be qualified to give a proper opinion on Fear Inoculum after a day of listening or even after a single spin. Crazy stuff!

For the weird time signatures I would suggest Karnivool, not as polished as Tool but worth a listen.

Great point. I've recently starting listening a lot to Reflection on Lateralus - it never really grabbed me before but now I can't get enough, the last few minutes are epic. And I've listed to the Lateralus album a good bit over the years, would probably class it as one of my favourite albums.

My opinion on Fear Innoculum is far from fully formed but I think it will stand the test of time as another great album. While it's not a huge shift in their sound or anything like that I think what it does is highlight how amazing Justin and Danny are, always thought Danny in particular didn't get enough credit for his skill and creativeness. Tool's strength is that they are all exceptionally good at their various instruments and are able to bring out the best in each other, most bands don't have this.

I'd totally agree. Would also add that I think this is Adam's finest album. Some of his guitar work is absolutely off the charts. Particularly in Pneuma and 7empest.

€70 from Amazon.de. Does that sound right? Seems very expensive, even for a double CD.

It has a 4" HD rechargeable screen inside of it with a 2 watt speaker that'd do it cost wise yes.

I paid $65 USD for it off the official Tool site so yeah the price there sounds about right from Amazon. It's a limited edition so nice to have for the collection!

Yep! Glad I'm not the only one! The order says we'll be emailed as soon as it's ready to ship. Suppose there's a fairly long production timeframe on these, and they were having to run a second batch due to demand, apparently.

Still having my mind blown by this album pretty much every day. A modern classic.

Now that the dust has settled, I still listen to Descending, Invincible and Tempest. Those are solid songs. I like Descending a lot.

The title track is underwhelming and a bit by the numbers. Pneuma is fine, but I find it a bit forgettable. Culling voices is just okay. And chocolate chip trip is fun, but it's really just a filler.

It's a good album. I don't think the songwriting is as strong as their heyday and a lot of it is Tool content to sound like Tool, but it's good that it exists at all. It is also, to be fair, one of the best produced - or more specifically one of the best mixed rock albums - that I can remember for a long time.

I still can't get my head around it. My initial bugbear was that it was taking a big queue from previous albums but without the huge emotional highs/lows - quite happy to never get out of 4th gear. I decided to just accept that this is a different kind of album. It's very enjoyable whenever I do throw it on but for now, at least, it doesn't reach the classic heights of Aenima and Lateralus. I also still get the slight sense that the vocals are an afterthought to music that has been excessively pored over.

Its funny, its not my favourite Tool album and i would mimic the previous comments that a lot of it seems a bit rehashed but in saying that its never far from my playlists and gets played at least twice a week.

I've not been able to get it to settle with me and digest it fully. The title track I hated when I first heard it is in a daily play list now but the rest of it is a waste on me. Just does nothing for me after many breaks and returning to it.

I don't get this attitude. There are thousands of bands who are phenomenal musicians and create works which may or may not be to your taste. Do you persist with multiples of listens to something that you don't like/get out of respect with all of them too?
Life is too short, if you don't like something why not just move on and listen to an album you actually do like?
I only bought the digital version so I've already deleted the 4 tracks I've no interest in and may cull another yet. The remainder goes well with the 7 track version of 10,000 days I've curated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

I've probably listened to this less than 10,000 days and I really didn't warm to that album.

Found myself going back to this a bit lately.

I recently got a new fancy-dan pair of headphones and have been listening to a lot of old and new music with new ears. Sometimes having really good sound quality does albums no favours and actually makes you realise how badly mixed or compressed things really are, when you listen forensically. Fear Innoculum is one of the best sounding albums I've listened to. Everything is so pristine and mixed perfectly - it's fcking outstanding stuff.

Don’t know what cans you’re using but try streaming on soundcloud. I think it’s a higher bit rate than Spotify. At least it sounds like it. The sound card in the device your listening on can make a big difference too.

FI is an incredible album. Took me a while to fully appreciate how good it is. Invincible and Descending take the biscuit for me. I haven't heard a band push boundaries like that in a long time.
