Cheers for those interested in giving me a hand with my car hunt.

Unfortunately, as said previous, my 2007 Mondeo failed the NCT on a few things, making it unrealistic to bother fixing it up (which I still maintain is a shame as it still drove great, but how and ever).

So I Spent €900 yesterday and ended up with it's facelifted Brother, going from a 1.8 Petrol to a 1.8 diesel.

    The Old and the New:

    mondeos.jpg

I think water ingress at the boot is an issue, as there was a shallow pool of water there (under the spare wheel) when I pulled the car apart to give it some thorough cleaning today, but I'll keep an eye on it. It has an NCT til 08/20, so if i can get that far out of it, for €900, I'll be a happy camper. It's a tad noisy at idle after been driven for a bit.

I'm in two minds as to whether or not I'll send it over to my mechanic next week and get a quick look over done to see if he can spot any potential issues that might take it off the road, or if I'll just keep driving it and hope nothing drastic happens. I don't want to plunge a fortune into it, but at the same time if I can spend €200 now on some pulleys or belts etc. that will prevent the car writing itself off in 2 months, it could be money well spent.

Historically, I have had rotten luck with diesel cars. Hopefully this will be the one that doesn't hate me (until 08/20, when the NCT expires.. can do what it wants then!).
Those old mondeos will go forever. Two work colleagues had them up until a year or so ago one had over a half million Kms and the other heading for 400k

Has the m7 after Naas went back to 120 kmh yet ?

It was still only 80 last Sunday anyway (although everyone drives at 100).

Have a car booked in for NCT next Sunday but just found out now that I’ve to be away next weekend. Do you think if i brought it some evening this week would they bring it in for test? I don’t mind waiting an hour or so for someone not to show up so i can take their spot, or would they just say “no, come back Sunday” to me? Anyone have any previous experience?

Get someone else to bring if you don't need the car.

    Unfortunately not an option.

Feck it, I don’t live too far away from the test centre. Might just spin over after work tomorrow and see if it’s possible.

Most of the petrol 1.8s were scrap long before rot set in 🤓

Was talking to a guy today who had a 91 Mazda 3 as his daily. Had 5 people call to his house (opposite Morton Stadium, Santry) offering to buy it over the last while.

Anyway he comes home from holiday this week and its robbed. He had one of those big locks across the steering wheel and they cut through it. He also had his licence and other cards in the Sun visor pocket and they found those and chucked them on the driveway.

Friend of mine has one too and lives near enough to Santry Stadium. His was nicked last year but he got it back relatively unschated. He found the car dumped in Darndale..

I'd put money on it being there, but if he had people knocking offering to buy it I'd say a banger racer got fed up of asking and decided he'd just take it...

    New 2 Series Gran Coupe:

I'm just not feeling the love for the outside shape, especially that over the top front grill or saloon shape to the rear.

I bought a car off an indy dealer in dublin about 5 years ago. And to get it NCT'ed he said he could deal with it, or i could do it myself. To get it done quickly, he said just go over and wait, and they'll take you in when a gap frees up.

I was waiting about 2.5 hours all in all (from handing the car over, to getting it back), but they did test it even though I had no appointment.

But I dunno if there's just a few euro changing hands there or not. But either way, in my experience it is indeed possible.

They'll make a GC out of anything these days won't they?

Next up - the new BMW Z4 GC :D

Never mind the looks, the real problem is its front wheel drive. Nothing against front wheel drive cars in general but all wrong in a BMW IMO (especially one that's meant to be a Coupé of sorts). This could have been a modern day E36 or E46, it is the right size and everything :(!

It's like a FWD Audi , inherently wrong but a sign of the times.

Duke why would someone want a 28 yr old car in mint condition that's now in classic territory as a banger racer? Do the cars have to be a certain age?

Condition or age isn't important to them, they rip out all lights/glass/interior and paint them anyway. Heres an example of one (a 91 323)

    14934734337_78a1fc98b1_c.jpg

323s, Civics and Primeras etc are a common enough choice of car in 1600cc or rookie class races, hence the speculation.

Lovely car, but it's a sporty saloon, it is NOT a bloody coupe. Two too many doors. I wish carmakers would stop with this nonsense. "Oh the roofline is a little sloped at the rear, so this makes it a coupe(and gives neck ache to rear passengers), which makes it sound sporty". No it doesn't you marketing muppets. /Rant

My wife just had the front tyres on her G30 changed
I was amazed at the tyre wear and longevity. They were BStone Potenza, rear set needed replacement at 28K, front set did a very respectable 38K and there still more than legal.
She's on Michelin Pilot Sports now, much better grip and more feedback but they will be ate of it in no time

It stands to reason - more grip, more wear.

Absolutely, the Potenza are a decent tyre , I've never seen a set last that long.

I had Potenzas on my RX8 and Potenza RFTs on my 335i. I got rid of them both asap, i found them to be a horrible tyre especially the RFTs.

On the 335 I went through 3 sets of Goodyear Eagle F1, loved them. My current car came with Pirelli P Zero RFTs from the factory. I like them a lot so kept replacing like for like over the last 4 years.

Is it an x-drive? I find the potenzas awful for grip in damp conditions. Dangerously so. I'll be changing to michelins in the next few weeks

Not xdrive. Agreed ! I would have changed as well but she was happy enough with them. I had a couple of cars on Potenza and Turanza and changed as quickly as I could do
