Of course there's a housing crisis - some folk seem to think that the absolute only people who are homeless are those looking for everything to be handed to them.
There are also people who are renting privately who have to move out for renovations or the house being put up for sale, and they can't find somewhere else due to rents being unaffordable.

I had to move home a couple of years ago and have not been able to get out since.

All of us work full time.

So I'm sure you can sleep soundly at night, knowing there is no housing crisis in Ireland and all is right with the world.

    You can go and swing.
According to "Woke" though, there shouldn't be private landlords letting homes for folk like your brother and his family. There are certainly scummy landlords but obviously there are decent ones - and isn't it better that they let rather than leave their property abandoned.

That person's brother and his family shouldn't be in that position in the first place. Yet they are because landlords around the country are hoarding property for Air BnBs or hiking up the rents to take advantage of the housing crisis. Landlords caused this, not me.

Then there are the landlords who aren't Air B&B-ing or increasing rent by a stupid amount.

You are right, Woke Hogan, that there are a lot of scummy landlords - and there is a system here that fosters such scumminess. But saying every single one of them is... is just the T word.

If there were a regulatory system to root out the scum, it would just be a service - found globally, even in the most developed European countries with excellent social systems.

A regulatory system to root out the scum would be ideal. It's interesting how you don't hear the "good" landlords calling for such a regulatory system. I wonder why? Hmmm.

People who whinge and bellyache and moan about the state of the world or their lives but don't feel the need to actually do anything about it.

95% of the dross that is on the television.

Gossip...the sign of a small and limited mindset.

What other people think about me. For too many years, I constantly worried about what others thought of me, especially those who I believed held influence over my life and career. I did a lot of people pleasing and looking back, it was a complete waste of energy. As I get older, I find I am less and concerned about others' opinions.

Now I try to just worry about myself and my nearest and dearest.

I don't give a shite about the opinions of Katie Hopkins. I don't find anything shocking about someone verbally abusing overweight people or any of the other nonsense she utters. The media might as well pick someone who has been banned from Boards numerous times for personal abuse and hire them to write a newspaper column and appear on bullshit chat shows.

I find it insane that anyone is giving her any kind of platform when she's clearly just on a wind-up 24/7. Her "fans" are morons.

Air B and B isn't renting our house out, and TBH.
Even if we were in an Air B and B high demand area, it's not a letting method I'd choose.

Yes in theory it would greatly increase the property income, but as I said in a reply to a different poster we manage the property passively.
The only real input I wish to have is in ensuring that any maintenance and repairs are carried out promptly and in knowing that my tenants are happy with our pile of bricks and mortar.

Secondly, as trite as this may sound.
It's a family home, in a nice neighbourhood and ideally a family would live in it.

We have had the same tenants for over 4 years, they are shortly starting a new part 4 period.
They are happy tenants, we are happy landlords.

We do have a property in an RPZ, however we are far below the RPZ limit for what we charge.
That doesn't just limit us to 4% increases with our current tenant, but should they leave it restricts the rate we could charge any future tenant.

We comply fully with all regulation and when it comes to minimum standards, I would like to think that we do our best to better them.
Your call for "good" landlords to push for regulation is akin to asking Turkeys to vote for Christmas?
Left to landlords, surely the push would be to make the system entirely advantageous to them?

Landlords in particular of individual properties are not a hivemind.
Regulation needs to be designed for 2 purposes.
    1. To ensure that tenants have security of tenure and certainty of regulation regarding what rights they have and what obligations both parties to a rental agreement have.

    2. To ensure that landlords have a means to ensure an affordable and quick means to regain their property in the event of a tenant witholding rent.

The fact that overholding on both rent and mortgages can take in the order of years to resolve, traps quite a bit of supply
That single unit landlords are carrying blame for a broken system is IMO quite a stretch.

The council's, housing associations, institutional landlords and property companies all do far more to drive the formulation of policy than Mary and Joe who rent out a house one of them had bought before they met up.
To decide people are scum because they choose to rent out their property is quite an extreme reaction IMO.

Should they choose to leave it idle?
Place it on the market at a loss?
    Donate it?

    5 :P
There are 5 people posting on it, that's a 150% more than the couple you claimed....

In a serious note though, it's one of those threads where much like the G O'D and Antivax and other contrarian threads.

It's important IMO to challenge the naysayers and evaluate their proof..
If evidence was presented to change the consensus itd be quite quickly accepted.
I'd be surprised if course, but anyone who clings to a definite position when evidence says otherwise is more a fanatic than a religious extremist.

I don't think her fans are the problem, it's the people that claim to be offended by her but give her the attention she craves. If they hated her that much they would change the channel when she appears on some talk show or they wouldn't read articles written by her. That would send a clear message to the media that no one cares about her and they'd stop employing her. What could have really ended her 'career', at least in Ireland, would be if the Late Late Show audience had just walked out when she appeared.

The reality is these people want a 'celebrity' hate figure in their lives that they can whine about. They're the ones responsible for her fame.

I'm sorry to hear that, never nice to see people in those sort of circumstances. I hope you and your family can get back on your feet soon.

I worked along side and assisted a homeless department in a Local Authority for several years in the recent past. Unfortunately honesty is often at an absolute premium when people are declaring their homeless circumstances.

Now undoubtedly there were some legitimate, unfortunate cases (eg abusive relationships, repossessions etc), but in my experience the vast majority of people who found themselves 'homeless' fell into at least one of the following 4 categories:

    1. Living in their parents house, having as many children as possible to use as collateral for a council house.

    2. Have drug or alcohol problems and got kicked out. They were usually living with friends or a partner, but denied this vehemently.

    3. Are travellers, not too many of them looking for mortgages or legitimate work.

    4. Are looking for Homeless HAP rather than regular HAP as the rates are better.

Hearing about other people and whats going on in their lives - Gossip, I dont give a **** about it and I wish people would stop telling me about whats going on in the lives of people that I dont know or care about.

I also dont care about people who have gone travelling, they put it on all their social media, tell everyone they come into contact with, no one cares, the only person that cares that they went travelling, is themselves, no one else gives a ****.

To be honest, the more I watch the news these days, the more I realise that so much of it has no bearing on most people's lives.

OK so Brexit, Irish matters etc are important to us to a degree, but topics getting huge coverage, like the HK anti-extradition protests, I could care less about. I won't be flying to HK so the airport could be blocked for the next decade and I'll survive.
