Saw the Space Invaders and SF2 ones haven't shifted in Cork or Limerick TK Maxx yet. Down to €290. I'm still holding out for my original €40 clearance threshold cos I really don't need one.

Nice to see the PacMan cab become available for pre order at Smyth's.
It would be great to get it for 200 at some stage like the GameStop machines before Christmas.

I've got a Space Invaders machine. It needed a new screen, and while it took many many weeks to arrive (along with the clear deck protector) it was free, so fairplay to Arcade1up considering I only paid 200 for it.

I finally picked up a replacement spinner for my Asteroids/Tempest cabinet, from Amazon.com.
It's a pretty easy drop-in replacement and should make the performance of Tempest almost arcade perfect, at last!
It worked out at about €60 or so, shipped.

Was that including the customs fees prepaid?

    Prepaid, yep.
Still not shipped, I'm getting a June the 6th delivery date.

    Here's a thing...
I was on the 1up site this morning, and I see the spare parts section.
In there, for about €55, I could order the 12in1 motherboard and control deck.
Would this be all that's needed to convert the Asteroids cab into something more capable?
    https://arcade1up.com/products/atari-12-1-pcb
    https://arcade1up.com/products/atari-12-1-control-deck

Equally you could install any of the other PCB/Control Panel combinations, to get the cab you want, albeit without the specific art.

edit: Seems they don't ship to anywhere bar US and Canada, I've emailed them to see if they are available here.
Might be a cost effective way to expand the cab without all that messing around with a RPi

    You could use address pal.
I'd buy your asteroids pcb off ya:D
I'd like to make a small atari cab with just vector games.
Its the only type of cab I wouldn't mind putting an LCD in.

There is that, I'm waiting did the upgraded spinner to arrive from the US.
If I was to change control panel I would need a new upgrade set

One of the guys in the cork retro group on Facebook ordered a replacement control panel for asteroids that gave a more of a street fighter layout, 2 player 6 button per player kind of vibe. Maybe there's sellers offering what you're looking for?

He ordered. His from the U.S.

You may have jumped the gun on the spinner,

arcade1up released an upgraded spinner today for only $18.49 that uses optical sensors. :P

I guess it remains to be seen how good it is in use though.

My replacement SF2 screen arrived today. Fit it there a while ago, it's much better. Still absolute pixelated ****e, but much better than the first :o I'd say I'm going to mod my two cabs, I just can't bare retro games on lcd's without some proper shader support.

Speaking of spinners, mine has finally shipped from the US, should have it this week.
At last, I'll be able to play Tempest properly!

edit: Should be here today! Install it this evening and give it a go!

Took ten minutes to fit the new spinner and the Arcade 1Up cab is finally allowing me to play a great game of Tempest!
    Very nice indeed.
Major Havoc is still a sh1te game though!

    So,
AtGames are going to try and go for the cherry, the home arcade with just about everything!

I'll be fascinated to see what emulation they are using and how the licencing is going to work.
Apparently it's going to also have WiFi to download more games ... from somewhere... I sure it's not Elmoparadise or something....

edit: Apologies, wrong video linked to, now fixed!

The problem is more the source being sh1te rather than the emulation being sh1te :pac:

    Yeah,

I got an arcade stick for the N64 and, not only is it ugly, but it is useless, as in there is no content to use it with!
Aside, perhaps, from Robotron 64 and Star Soldier.
    And that's it.

I wouldn't normally dismiss something out of hand, but those clowns have a track record, and it isn't good. Very same to assume this will be a piece of crap, like everything else their name is on.

It's not sh1te, but it's not perfect. There's been several major developments over the last 12-18 months.

Something fooky about the perspective in that last pic on the Forbes article, either those lads are 5 foot nothing or the cabs are on plinths and the two lads are average height but with 2ft long calves :pac:

I heard they are going to make Cocktail cabinets too.

Nice to see some custom controls but after playing with the tempest spinner I can only imagine how poor the controllers will be .

Have to get that Star Wars cabinet. It's magnificent.

Now that one would be savage! Not something you see too often I don't think? The others have been released in all sorts of compilations through the years but don't think many would have played these.

Especially not with the control system. It's too amazing to even contemplate.

The controller will be dirt i bet.
There is a guy that makes "real" reproduction ones and they cost 2/300e

    On another note.
I see they sell the PCBs separate on the 1ups site.
I really like the astroids/luner lander one.Anyone gotten them to work on a CRT yet?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,630 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

Not sure, either, that the LCD they use is going to the visuals justice.
I know, with my Asteroids/Tempest one it's a poor replacement for a proper display, no options either to even fake the vector graphics, so it's jaggies for breakfast, dinner and tea.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,997 ✭✭✭Shapey Fiend

I don't get how they'd put something out that doesn't at least attempt to emulate the vector graphics. It's going to look dirt.

They can certainly do something, you can see it in other efforts to bring Asteroids to consoles, there's all sorts of options to add the effect of a vector monitor to proceedings, but 1Up done seem to have bothered so far.

Looks like Arcade1up metal adjustable stools are now available on Smyths for €50 each:

    https://www.smythstoys.com/ie/en-ie/search/?text=Arcade1up

They're $80 to buy from best buy in the states so it looks like we got the better price for once.

There's a Galaga one and Mortal Kombat one on best buy, that are "sold out" but it may just be that they're not out yet.

As of today I've completed my Arcade1Up Jamma Mod.

I'm just going to give a little recap of the process as it might help others who are considering this, in some areas it seems very simple and in others more complicated. I started out by buying a Pandora's Box JAMMA Kit on EBay. If I were to advise anyone in future I would actually say maybe don't go with the kit. You'll end up having to replace things anyway.

It's very handy in the sense that you get a JAMMA Harness, PB6 PCB, a fan, speakers, joysticks and a power supply but the cheap LED buttons and micro-switches were not an easy connect at all. So I ended up having to buy a Happ style set from Amazon. These were much easier to deal with. And even saying that, I'm going to swap out the Zippy Joysticks for Sanwa Micro-switch Joysticks down the road as I just don't find getting diagonals on the Zippy easy, even after removing the restrictor gates (fine for the four way classics but not ideal for fighting games - a pity as the Zippy's mounting hole naturally fit into the 1Up). So if anyone was thinking of doing this I'd actually recommend to get everything separately, not as a kit. I only went for the kit because it was very convenient price-wise. There's also the matter of ending up with spares - I decided not to use the amp or the second fan.

In terms of modding the cabinet itself to JAMMA, it's pretty straightforward. You basically just gut everything and replace. Retro Ralph and FourCo OpPop have very good videos on the process of modding the 1Up to a JAMMA so even as a first timer, following those videos helps big time and I understood everything. I actually would have preferred to stick with the stock parts but the 1Up's use proprietary micro-switches that aren't compatible with the standard arcade style ones. There are little things in the process that seem simple but are timely e.g. getting the stock joysticks off with the amount of superglue that is used, replacing the stock speaker (again, would have preferred to keep it but the stock + and - connectors were soldered to the point where it would have complicated things).

I also opted to have a new hole drilled for the new speaker grill. Didn't have to do that but I liked the aesthetics of it. I also put a coin mech into the front panel. Not completely necessary for a home mod but I like to challenge myself to be able to 1CC games, not having the coin mech for me just makes it less "arcade". ;)

I anticipated the Chinese JAMMA harness would have been an issue over the subtraction of ground wires, but this wasn't the case. In fact, the seller on Ebay had the Tekken 2 PCB at €90 with the kick buttons soldered into the spare JAMMA pins so no need for kick harness. The only part that really frustrated me was the trouble over that faulty GBS video converter board I mentioned in the other thread.

But all's well that ends well. Must just put in the Scanline Generator once I have an extra VGA cable then the better Joysticks down the road and then sorted, sorted. And I've kind of caught the bug for JAMMA boards so if anyone has anything that they're finished with, give a yell (but not straight away, I need to save up again first) :P 😉

Here's the finished product. Side note: I was very happy to see Heihachi's face today (from the attract video). Scared five year old me but for twenty-eight year old me it meant mission accomplished.

The street fighter edition is £225 on amazon at the minute.

Not quite the prior game stop deal but with the sterling rate at the minute it’s getting there

I still have to get around to fixing mine
I got the free plastic overlay but have to drill out holes for the extra buttons I have
Also I still have to determine if it is the RaspPi or the adapter board that is causing me to have no sound

Agreed, I've two of them (got them in the GameStop offer at Christmas). They're nowhere NEAR worth rrp. The absolute max is €199, buy ideally, they'd be €149

Bit of another stupid modding question here:

Is there a way of physically rotating the horizontal stock monitor to a vertical orientation? I'm interested in perhaps picking up the 60-in-1 multi or similar for the vertical based games and I don't have the room for a second cabinet.

Or is there a setting on those multiboards that can orient it with the horizontal monitor?
