These two days have summed up the Irish attack perfectly.

When there is some seam or swing about we have a very handy little attack, well able to exploit any sideways movement. It's why I think we'll always be a handful at home (if the groundsman plays along).
On the other hand on flat hard pitches the complete lack of pace and quality spin means we will never bowl out test batting line ups, the ammunition just isn't there. Until we fix that we will continue to be cannon fodder especially away from home.
All in all still delighted with this test.

    100% agree

That was a real handy wicket

Is there an Irish Barmy Army?

What sort of chants might they have?
"Are you tweeting, Are you tweeting
    Are you tweeting Jacob Rees-Mogg?
    Are you tweeting Jacob Rees-Mogg?"

    Just a suggestion :)

37c (potentially up to 39c!) strikes me as potentially dangerous heat to players of any sport. I wonder will play be suspended.

Just on this point they face temperatures like this in places like India, Australia and the like. It does not cause any hold-ups in play, and many of these players will have played in such temperatures

What chase would put Ireland at evens?

    150?

    200?

I'm not use to cricket - i'm not sure just how physically rigorous it is as a sport but I would consider that a really bad temperature for soccer, rugby, cycling etc...

They did mention earlier in the coverage that Australia played a test in Sharjah against Pakistan where it hit 51 C.

Here’s a YouTube clip from it actually. There had been complaints about the heat, among them Ponting said it was too warm for a helmet, and ended up being caught on the side of the head by a ball. Still got 150 mind :pac:

But there’s more than just the possibility of dehydration etc to consider.

Well the less the better but if we can't chase down 200 in two days or a bit less, we can have no complaints. A run an over would nearly get us that. First though, we have to get past Root and/or his partners, could be twists and turns yet. Advantage neither team really at the moment in practice.

There was a so called Blarney Army at one point

150 should be doable, 200 would be a bit of pressure I reckon.

    Another wicket!

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,551 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

    WICKET! England 219-6 (Ali c Wilson b Rankin 9)
Boyd Rankin has bounced Moeen Ali out! He fenced tamely at a lifter outside off stump and got a thin edge through to Wilson. That’s really good bowling from Rankin, although it was another soft dismissal for Moeen. Ireland now have a serious chance of an astounding victory.

Whatever happens from now on, this has been a magnificent effort from Ireland. Hopefully, they can carry on.

    ...

All dependent on whether they can pick up the final four wickets cheaply. Unfortunately it wouldn’t be the first time this England tail has wagged though. Woakes and Broad each have test centuries, Curran a 50 or two

Not so sure this tail will. The Irish bowling is very tight and all the English batsmen are having problems with it.

You just never know with cricket, one of their tail enders just made 90 a few hours ago
