Looking at changing my car. One that’s made the potential list is the Golf GTI or R.

With the GTI mark 7.5 18/19 year what’s the difference between a car with and without the performance pack other than 15bhp extra also is there a noticeable difference in the way they drive ?

With the GTI is there any important optional extras to look out for that only certain ones had ?

The Performance Pack has a front diff and larger brakes (from the R) as well as the extra power. The DSG has an extra gear over the normal DSG GTI too.

Were not all the Mk7.5 GTis PP as standard or was that only a recent thing? Either way I think PP is a must if going GTi.

It’s only since WLTP came in that PP is the only GTI option because it wasn’t worth the time and effort probably to get it in line with the standards. As said above though, the PP is the one I’d have.

Thanks lads. Yes there are 2018 ones going around non PP. But based on what’s being said PP is the one to have plus will probably be more sellable down the road.

    What's he driving now?

Basically I think he was looking for something 300bhp ish and had ruled out a gti..... I think he mentioned he was looking for something really fast.

The GTI is not a slow car. It will definitely scratch his itch.

Options to go for on any of the mk7s are dsg with acc and the full headlight assist or whatever it’s called. I couldn’t be without them.

    Mmmm I dunno.
I spent a weekend in one recently (in Germany so it got to stretch it's legs)....its definitely not slow but if you're looking for 300bhp I don't see it doing the job.

Now I don't think cip is heavy footed so it might well be grand too.... If he splashed out on one I hope it'd be perfect for him.

It's not slow but it's not particularly exciting either. It is a really capable car though and such a brilliant all rounder. I guess it depends what you are looking for from a car.

Have you tried any in manual yet CIP ?

That's 100% my view on them (it really, based on one I drove)

If I was buying a golf it would be a manual PP. Also the PP doesn't give the dsg an extra gear, that come with the 7.5 facelift.

Doesn't your man drive a low powered A4? Think it'll be fine.

Yes I have a 1.4tfsi A4 150bhp so would be quick compared to that. Might go for a look at the weekend. Would have to be DSG no interest in manual. Looking on the VW site they are quoting 46k on the road price for a brand new one is there hidden costs on top of that as there are 191 demo ones priced at that price.

If you bought a new one what kind of lead time would there be 12 weeks ? Or do VW Ireland have a decent stock of new ones in the country you can pick from ?

I am thinking a GTI May be a better all round car for me. I was looking at Leon Cupras and while the power is great the interior isn’t and I would class VW build quality a little better but that’s just me personally I don’t have anything to back it up.

You could count on one hand the number of cars spec’d with dynamic light assist, so he has a problem there right away. Yours and Darren’s are 2 of them :D

@CIP all of your questions are answered multiple times over in this thread... it would be worth scrolling back and reading it.

A factory order might be problematic. Last I heard, the lead time was crazy. Something like 6 months. Secondly, they’ll be scaling back MK7 production pretty soon now in advance of the MK8. Your best bet is to try the dealers and see what’s already in the country, in the “pool” of available cars. So long as you aren’t too fussy on colour/spec.

The demo ones probably have a whack load of options like a sunroof and leather seats. Some are happy with that but me personally they're expensive options on an already expensive car.

Brescia wheels, DSG, tech pack, keyless, DCC and heated windscreen are the only options I'd bother with.

If you stick with the stock 18" I hear you could do without DCC but it depends on the roads you drive. I could drive a Cupra in Cupra mode all day long as the firmness isn't far off my Highline on 17" but the GF probably wouldn't care for it.

If you haven't driven a Cupra I recommend you do just to see your options.

Sorry yeah, should have stated that only came with the facelift.

I'd agree on the build quality or at least the finishing anyway.
On a gti there's still body coloured bits inside the doors that's a bit ish on a guts of 50k car IMO ....its in my sorento too so I'm not talking down to it... I doubt it's on an a4 though

I posted two months ago asking if anyone was thinking about parting with their GTI having just missed the one is Beshoffs by a few hours that Sunday. Anyway got sorted last week by Daltons who brought one in from the UK for me. 152 PP DSG in carbon grey with 8k miles and a host of extras; leather, tech, Dynaudio to name a few. Daltons were great to deal with as always.

For those on the fence or looking at these the car is a serious all rounder as mentioned. Definitely feels better than the sum of its parts if that makes sense. It feels quicker than the numbers suggest. Turn in is excellent as is the grip. You feel the diff working when pushed in a corner. I’ve done a lot of miles in a well speced F10 520d M sport and the GTI feels every bit as good for motorway cruising - especially with acc and app connect. It’s also very capable at soaking up the bumps on our rubbish roads.

Explicitly went for the GTI over an R as I’ve always preferred the looks. Runnings costs will be easier too. No doubt the R is more capable but the GTI doesn’t leave me wanting more for now.

On the GTIs I think if I was going to that level of spending I would just buy brand new even considering the extras they seem to be knocking a max of 2k off them as Demo if there was 5k of them fair enough but there isn’t worth the bit extra to get a brand new one that hasn’t got the sh!t driven out of it for 10k km and have some random County number plate on it which will be 6 months old next week. I am far from a reg snob but if the savings aren’t there no point buying demo.

In saying all that I will need to ring around to see what’s in stock there may not be many new ones sitting in Ireland.

The white gti is a cracker.

Is app connect on all Mk7s or is it an option. If a Mk7 does not have Nav is it likely to have app connect?

Thanks for the nice comments and best of luck with the car. It’s a superb example, hard to believe it’s going on 4 years old. If you think it’s good now then wait until you get some Revo software onto it!

That 182 R has no options on it apart from tech pack and metallic and it's listed €3k less than a new one. Are they really that stiff in not discounting GTI and R models?

I have a manual Mk7 GTi PP on 18s and have been very impressed with it. I live near some nice twisties that I travel on weekly and have not found it wanting or unexciting. On the contrary, I've had some epic drives (including one yesterday evening) and consider the PP model a close to perfect all-rounder for Irish roads.

I drove a manual R and a non-PP GTi before buying mine. The R was fantastic, so much grunt and excellent road holding, but the additional running costs and purchase price over GTi along with the fact that I could see myself lose my licence very quickly put me off. The non-PP GTi didn't feel significantly slower than the R in real world conditions, but the lack of traction was noticeable and understeer did creep in when pushed. For me the PP strikes the perfect balance of power and traction with manageable running costs.
