Someone in Monaghan with possibly under 40K can win three times in the one draw. With small holdings like we have it is down to luck. With average luck your 60K will get you four wins in a year.

I got back in now and I changed my password as well just in case. I received some spam over the weekend which quoted the password I use for the Prize Bonds website so I hope they haven't had a security breach. The spam mail, coupled with the downtime yesterday made me a bit suspicious.

Anyway, I have been 'invested' in Prize Bonds for 4 months now - Feb 2019 - May 2019 inclusive - paying in €100 a month by Standing Order.

Haven't had any winners yet. I'll format my winning records (or lack thereof) in the same style as you guys next week, thanks.

Is it possible to date a bond, as in when it was bought?

I recently received a €50 cheque for a bond I never knew I had. It had been sent to my childhood address. I left there 30 years ago. I have a few euro in prize bonds, not much and have never won before. I would love to find out when approximately it was bought, I don't have the actual bond, but it starts CY354***

    Any ideas?

CM was Jan 2000 so CY would only be a few months later.

Interesting article this morning in The Irish Times:

"Are you mad to keep your money in prize bonds?"

Those articles pop up every now and then in the papers. I wouldn't want to be paying this expert too much for his advice.

    Problematic?
But if it’s only a bit of fun, and gives people the chance to win €1 million, what’s the harm? This might be true for people with small amounts saved. But the figures suggest some people may have six-figure sums in prize bonds; and financial advisers say this can be damaging to their financial health.

Inflation is one factor to consider. “This is something that people tend to not take into consideration as a risk, because they don’t physically see the value of their money going down,” says Steven Barrett, managing director of Bluewater Financial Planning.

However, if you put €100 into a prize bond 10 years ago - it’s still worth €100 today, but what you can buy with it is less. With deposit accounts, you will make a guaranteed return – even if it is low. “But with prize bonds you will never get money back unless you win it in a raffle,” he says.

Anyone with a six figure sum or even just one prize bond knows that they lose money by inflation. And six figures sums are common. There are plenty of seven figure sums from people who got in before the ceiling.

The article is a mixture of up to date information from the 2018 Annual Report along with out of date figures for the number of prizes. 4734 prizes per week at present, and going up every month.

What's your holding, if you've only 1 bond then it's unlikely you'll have a win in 100 years.

Substantial holding, but not nearly as much as some of the higher holders in here. Going on 3 years now, not a single win. Thinking of taking it all out soon and investing it in shares.

I haven't done that well in my other investment strategies either though in recent years, apart from my pension :(

If you did have the original prize bond, the month and year it was purchased is stated on the bond.
Nothing for me again this week, I'm losing heart, but there is always next Friday, having a bad run at the moment, weeks turning into months without a win:(

    Substantial holding, :(

Not being nosy, but what is SUBSTANTIAL, just a rough estimate to have a meaningful discussion, you don't have to give exact details, but we''re all here to share our ''prize bond experience'' I've been very open with my holding, it gives an interesting insight to the whole topic.

Another €50. I consider myself quite lucky actually.

Bought 10k 12 months ago, quickly won 50 euro. Second win today. 1% return I 12 months ain't too bad at all.

Gosh - you are certainly defying the odds - even if you hold the max now allowable of €250,000 (unless you already held that amount previous to the restriction) that's an incredible return and the only one on this forum I'd say who has won more each year.

Prepare to be amused even further. Your 60K should get you three prizes (2.8) in eight months, with average luck.

People win two prizes every week with possibly far less than 10K. I have a 10K holding plus other bigger ones. The 10K made 1% last year, but a bigger one made only 0.2%.
