It was epic . Visibility really peed me off but the later creepy scenes in crypt and with Arya hiding were excellent.
Not as good as bob on first viewing and disappointed with walkers not being involved, they are far less menacing than that opening sequence of episode one.

Episode synopsis: Zombies going from crazed mega-strength lunatics, to being non-existent during the retreat, to tip-toeing around inside the castle, to being incredibly weak so the main characters can hold them off when surrounded, to being so strong, they can break through stone in the crypt.

We are now half way through the last season, and all that's been achieved is one somewhat entertaining battle, and the deaths of the Night King, Theon, Jorah, Melisandra, Edd, Mormont, Umber and Beric. Fan-favorite armour is strong.

It was obvious by the end that Arya was going to kill the NK; I just didn't expect her to manage to jump 50 feet over all the NK's lieutenants and wights in the open without being seen.

It was but they are under his command, they didnt flinch when Theon ran 100 metres at him with a lance

The Dothraki were scary ****ers. When they got the fire damage buff I thought -well that evens the odds a bit. Then they were snuffed out in the dark, and I felt more dread than I thought possible from a TV show.

Racist? Against the Mongol horde is it? Overthinking things there. Better to try to immerse yourself.

That was exactly it, they had a "fcuk yeah" light the swords and charge moment. Bronn had a line earlier about the Dothraki being a swarm in open field, that's them in a nutshell, they're never going to man the walls or make formations like the other armies.

I didnt see it that way at all.
The Dotrakis ran straight into the entire army of wights unaware of what they where facing, the wights would have literally dragged the entire army under. They took down the dragon and climbed the walls of the castle, they were like insects. I dont think its so much about their individual strength, its more so about their power working together as a group so it makes sense they would over power the Dotraki. There was easily 100+ to one when the Dotraki attacked, they didnt stand a chance.

There was much less of them at a time during the battle scenes in the castle and they where confined to a small space with plenty of people ready to fight the wights.

They wearnt tip toeing around the castle, they only become violent when they see a living person, like a wild animal when it sees pray.

There is no pleasing some people. That episode was amazing.

The other WWs aren't. In S7, one of them was out and about with his wights when the A-Team went up past the wall.

Any thoughts on how Arya got past all the generals? Just raw pace, agility and guile...?

I thought she was the whitwalker behind the NK to the left as you looked at the screen.

Get over yourselfs. That was a bloody fantastic episode.

I'm not going to think it's a great episode just because it was a big spectacle. In the episode where the Night King dies, I didn't expect that the best character and most interesting scenes would be Melisandre.

F**k me, it's hard to please everyone eh? I feel like whatever episode was put out, there still would have been a sizeable group of people picking holes in it, such is the best expectation built up over the last couple of years, and various people wanted different things out of the final season.

Was it perfect? No, definitely not. I certainly disagree with the kneejerk opinions some had about it being the best TV episode they'd ever seen. I thought the writers played it a bit safe with the amount of big characters who survived,. And I'd have liked to have seen more of the Night King in the final season, and the actual White Walkers did effectively nothing in that episode other than look menacing. But all that said, it was an epic episode and I was thoroughly entertained. I understand not everyone will feel the same way, but some of the comments in here are a bit OTT.

Thought it was a great episode.
They took out most of Dany's army in the first half an hour with the Dothraki being eliminated (in an open field) and the Unsullied protecting the retreat. Her army is completely demolished. Thankfully she still has her dragons.
I think Dario Naharis and the rest of the Second Sons will have to bolster the numbers in the next episode or 2, there's no way they have anything close to 40,000 soldiers left (which is what the Golden Company have alone).

I loved the fact that it was Arya that took out the Night King, but I didn't like how it was done. Does that mean she is Azor Ahai? And if so are there any other implications?

Can't believe there's only 3 episodes left, can't wait for next week.

Nah just people not impressed by the bad guys the show has built up for eight seasons by a character who has been a waste of space for quite a while (braavos /faceless men stuff was awful), and has had nothing to do with the NK plot. Game of thrones started out as gritty and ruthless , it’s a ****ing fan pleasing Marvel movie now

Lol if you think the writers were thinking about any of that

Just before she lunged, one of the generals had a "what was that noise?" moment where he half looks behind him.

She basically is a ninja. :P

One of my favourite bits was when Sansa told Tyrion he was the best of the three!!
Also found their scene in the crypt very emosh

Loved every single second of that. Wrecked after it

But Azor Ahai was mentioned in the show already, it'll surely be at least referenced by a red priest/priestess.

But does Azor Ahai have to be the one that kills the Night King? I read the books years ago and the promised one narrative never overly interested me but the prince(ss) that was promised could just as well lead the fight but not necessarily kill the NK.

It was a great episode but still had its problems.

Every helpless woman/child/eunuch in the crypts should be dead.
Tyrion and Sansa looked ready to end their own lives --> they creep out of hiding for some reason --> See Varys and some children ---> ?????

We are left with a situation where the North, an area the size equivalent of Brazil is now solely populated with named characters... but essentially depopulated of all other life.

In a nutshell, it was implausibly disappointing that so many named characters survived.

I thought it was a great episode overall. Not without its issues, and I'd put both Blackwater and Battle of the B*stards ahead of it, but still a fantastic episode. My biggest complaints would be not enough named characters dying, which given how few episodes there are left it's hard to see why they kept some of them alive, or showed them in serious inescapable danger for so long (especially Sam lying in the middle of everyone being swarmed and Brienne/Pod/Jamie completely backed up against the wall), and Arya's sneaking scene in the library or whatever room that was. I get it kinda ties in to showing how sneaky she can be before she uses her skills to get to the NK, but it broke the flow of the episode and went on too long imo.

Episode was very dark and hard to follow in a lot of areas too. Just shots of torsos crashing up against each other.

Did Dany's third dragon (the one Jon was riding) die now too? And do we know if it was Gilly who died in the crypt?

I loved it for what it was - a great suspense filled battle. I kept expecting people to die and they didn't so now I am wondering who will die before the end of the show and that's a plus for me.

I'm happy the NK was killed, it's game of thrones and now much more interesting that the only army left is Cersei's because it will be 'Game' of thrones again and not 'Battles for the throne'

Aye, I'm a helt melt for wondering why trebuchets and cavalry were in front of the army, and the trenches behind. The forces were literally set up as if to siege Winterfell and protect the attacking forces from a surprise attack from within.

"Let's sacrifice the Dothraki by not giving them fire, dragonglass, or Valyrian steel. Next, we get absolutely slaughtered by the swarms of the dead. And finally, we retreat to a safe spot behind the trenches we just built, wave at Dany to come light them with her dragon, and then we're all good. Everyone agreed?"
"Dude, we're making dick jokes. No time for plans."

After such a strong start to the entire show for multiple seasons, it's a bit disappointing that a seven-year-old playing Rome: Total War for the first time would employ better tactics.

I really don't get the disappointment that loads of starring characters didn't die...?

The characters we know (vs the nameless) are some of the best warriors, no wonder they survived. I'm glad Brienne, Jamie, Pod etc. survived a battle and weren't offed by some nameless corpse in the corner of the screen. Deaths should mean something. The armies lost thousands, it's enough for me.

The bloodlust is insane here from some people. There were four or five significant casualties, that works for me. If the survivors marched South to Cersei and had barely anyone left but loads of generics, it would suck.

I really enjoy discussion and other people's opinions that are different to mine but these forums really turn into sh¡tshows full of people who just hate episodes for baffling reasons.

    Okay.

So I can put some more coherent thoughts as to why I didnt like that. I will try to put the criticisms in chronological order.

    1. Game of Thrones is character driven and no character is safe. That was the most enjoyable part of the show. You just knew that no one was safe and it added to the tension. Ned Stark. Robb Stark. Stannis. Jon Snow. Tywin Lannister. Jamie's right hand. The Hound. The Mountain. Oberyn Martell. etc. I really really enjoyed the Scene in Episode 2 as a consequence where a lot of people I expected to be imminently dead were sitting around before a battle, Man I thought, this is going to be so powerful on a rewatch when all these characters die next week.

    2. ENOURMOUS inconsistencies. Hello. I'm the Dorthraki horde. 50,000 Screamers. But we've lived our life like a candle in the wind. Chaaaaaaaaaaaaaarge. *Snuff*
Hello. We are 100,000 Dead Army. We have broken in Winterfell. Yipee. We have killed EVERYONE except the 5 main characters. Sam- NO fighting skills. Alive. Check. The Onion Knight- Not a shread of combat ability. Alive- Check. Sir Brienne and Pod. On the field- survival check.

    3. Sir Friend Zone. Sole Survivor of the Dothraki Horde attack. Teleports back to Winterfell ahead of the dead. Teleports into Winterfell ahead of the dead minus one horse. Teleports back over the wall. Over the 100,000 Dead to Dani to protect her from the horde who suddenly decide to obey the rules of Chivilery and attack one at a time.

    4. Speaking of Chivilery. Reek, aka Theon the Peon completes his redemption character arc which no-one gives a **** about by playing matador with the Knight King. Oh look I'm out of arrows and the dead are running back and forth like duck hunt. Lets have a chat with Bran and chaaaaaarge. *Snuff*

    5. Arya. I'm on the wall. Oh no. The wall is overfun and I cannot swing my broomstick. I guess I'll head inside and play the last of us. Sneak level increased to 56. I'n being chased by 50 dead but I am rescued by the knight brought back 7 times to save me so I can play Super Mario with the knight king.

    6. I'm a dragon. Oh. I am also a dragon. Nice to meet you. Lets play in the Clouds and the dark. WTF is happening. Its so dark. Oh wait the night king has fallen off. Oh look dragon fire doesnt burn him. Oh look at that cheeky smile.

    7. Hi, I'm Jon Snow. I'm BRILLIANT at hide and seek. Exit Dragon. Chase night king. Raises the dead- 50,000 Dothraki. 20,000 unsullied. Okay lads, one at a time. Oh my gf has started the barbacue. Great Sir Friend zone can I borrow your teleporter to somehow get past all the dead into Winterfell. Oh Look a dragon. Fire. HIDE, SEEK. Dodgeball chamption 2019.

The production was fantastic. The scene was set. Until it got more and more and more and more ridiculous.

I can suspend disbelief in a show that has dragons ffs. but that was an hour and a half cartoon that basically pissed away the 5 books and the last 7 seasons.

The Battle of the Bastards was the most realistic depiction of battle I have ever seen on a screen.

That was the most ridiculous. It was beyond bad.

Personally, it's because last week seemed to be all about setting up their deaths. Many posters who admitted the dialogue was gash excused the episode because it was "necessary".

It wasn't. Last week was wasted setting up deaths for major characters that didn't happen, which brings me back to my point from last week where I wanted more dialogue with Bran, about tactics etc.

The show subverted our expectations not my killing them, but by foreshadowing their deaths and letting them live.

I understand that and thats somewhat fair enough. But I'd argue that's a problem with perception that they were being set up for death. They were convinced that they were going to die - doesnt mean they have to. If they all died, I'd be on the other side of the fence being totally unsurprised thinking 'well this was telegraphed a mile away, that's not great television.'

I really think that if you're that offended by some narrative contrivances that are there to push a story along and in some cases close character arcs, you should stick to non-fiction television.

You could raise these types of arguments against most episodes of TV shows and most fiction/sci-fi/fantasy movies.

Yeah, but GOT wasn't just another fantasy TV show up until last season..
