Disgraceful of RTE and Virgin TV and fair play to Sky News for showing the very sad Funeral of Lyra Mckee.

May she Rest in Peace.

She did not deserve to be shot by these thugs stuck in a past that should be left behind now.

She died too soon and had so much to live for but in her short life she accomplished a lot.

My condolences to her partner, family and friends.

For a lot of the troubles they wouldn't have the technology to show them. And when they did, they wouldn't have the time to show them unless they cut into programming on RTE 1 & 2. And there were loads of them. so that's all we would have been watching on TV.

What's "disgraceful" about it? Maybe RTE and Virgin Media aren't able to show it. But why check into the reasons when you can go on a good rant.

I am not having a rant was just saying. They would have no problem having a news special if the Government collapsed tomorrow just like they did the specials in 2010 when the then taoisoech stepped down and the dreaded IMF came into the country. I only came across it on Sky news accidentally.

I never said that. I just said fair to Sky for showing it. I was not looking for it or expecting it. It was a very sad funeral do and no I did not watch it all.

This is more relevant for most people in this country than watching a funeral mass.

It was a tragedy what happened to Lyra and I hope the people responsible are found, locked up and the key is thrown away.

Having said that, getting worked up about a funeral for someone (that very few people had heard of before last week) not being televised is bananas, sorry. I also think televising the funeral (and broadcasting peoples' grief for all to see) is over the top, voyeuristic and an invasion of privacy. Let the poor family grieve in peace.

I've lost three immediate family members since 2014, all of them sudden and way before their time. I cannot even begin to imagine what it's like being photographed or recorded while you're saying your final goodbyes, not to mention dealing with those types of surrounding circumstances. Bizarre that people would want to watch it televised or feel that they are in someway paying their respects by doing so.

Totally agree. Funnily enough, I can understand the OPs surprise, RTE/Virgin broadcasting it would be more in line with Irish people's fetishisation of funerals than Sky doing it for a mainly British audience

Sky love nothing more than a good old tragedy. Natural disasters are ideal because they're politically neutral. Next in line are terrorist atrocities, or just plain lethal cowardice, as the lines are clearly drawn and we can all congratulate ourselves on being the good guys. If there's anything even remotely contentious it's time to switch over to Al Jazeera, a station that's not afraid to cover itself in other people's shít.

It's in poor taste in my opinion.

As said, what about all of the other funerals not being televised? Because Twitter.

Why would anyone consider something as horrific as the funeral of a lovely young brave person shot for no reason, to be spectacle worthy?

True in most cases,but the family and partner of Lyra would have given permission for the transmission meaning as many people as possible shared in the celebration of her life and got the poignant message delivered by Fr McGill chastising politicians out there

Disgraceful you say and you didn't even check if it was shown on the channels you criticise.

Did TG4 or Channel 4 show it? Are they disgraceful too for not wanting to beam a persons funeral into peoples homes?

Personally I wouldn't be put out if nobody showed a funeral as like others I think a family's grief should be private but I guess not everyone would agree with that.

Very true, but I've only ever seen Irish stations cover funerals the way they do. Usually Ciaran Mullooly or Plastic Sheeting after some horrific road collision, talking about how this tragedy has 'rocked' the small community of Ballynahiginasagart, with a soundbite from an octagenarian priest relayed over tinny loudspeakers outside the church.
Pretty much every evening on 6.1. Grim stuff

This is a funeral. Its not like it happened out of the blue (the funeral, not the killing)
