€130 per annum is not a large amount of money in a country with 1 of the highest dole/disability payments in the world. And in a country where today we learned we need to import tens of thousands of workers because we've a labour shortage.

As for your mentioning of unmentionables...whatever!

And yet if Conor McGregor is ‘fighting’ in Vegas, the same lot will beating the heads off each other to get on the planes.

    You couldn’t make it up.

It's insane that a topic like this, where the annual costs of said products was pitched at €130 per annum, can feature on Ireland's #1 mid-morning radio show.
It's also insane that such a term/thing as 'period poverty' was created.

It's a current affairs programme and the woman interviewed is currently doing her best to help.
I can't see how it's an inappropriate topic.
You are of course entitled to your opinion on the topic.

I guess at this stage there is going to have to be a change. SOR took a lot of time off last summer and then made a big deal of coming back and saying his batteries were recharged and he was raring to go again.

Clearly there is stuff going on that most are not privvy to

It looks time to fit a new presenter in here bit pleeeese not MOC on a permanent basis.

Maybe there is a "boardsie" who has ears in RTE who could update us all

    No, Meeriam couldn’t be permanent.

Nobody could put up with that accent for two hours..... surely there is some more talent out there who wouldn’t annoy the listeners.

O’Mongain got the jolly out to ‘Africar’ But couldn’t put up with his accent.

Not for two hours. He’d want to watch the letter ‘u’... like months vs munnths..

    No way.

I agree. Miriam is OK in small doses and I mean small doses, once a week. The more you listen to Miriam, the more you doubt her sincerity, she just sounds false.

She just isn't competent enough; Vincent Browne , Mick Clifford and Gene Kerrigan on rotation.

aaah c’mon ...the license payer doesn’t want that wall of negativity.

    Steady up there.

Claire Byrne would be good. Outside hires like Gavan Reilly or Sinead O'Carroll would be good. I really like when Miles Dungan covered. But Miriam is tough listening..

Could they move Dobbo from Morning Ireland?

Last week was ridiculous. You had Baz handing over to Miriam, it was loike Ross O'Carroll Kelly FM.

It hasn't been mentioned but SOR is 64 years old and an RTE staffer so he'll be retiring on 65th birthday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,331 ✭✭✭jeremyj1968

Very surprised to find out that he finds the job so stressful though. He's good at it, seemed to enjoy it, and always enjoyed a joke.

I'd say he'll be like Derek Mooney though. He'll be out of the place for about six months before he'll be looking for the old job back.

Miriams voice is awful and while I am at it so Is Ciara Kellys.

Really, really unpleasant to listen to.

Are the any new people being trained up to take over.

Keelin Shanley might be a good replacement. Gemma O'D would certainly shake things up!

    I vote for Rachel English

Gemma's putting out a good few youtube streams these weeks. Search her and you will see the most recent ones. Few interesting ones about Ian Bailey and Garda corruption.

Very comprehensive report by Gemma O'D on du Plantier and Ian Bailey case.
I wasn't aware of the full extent of Garda failures and smearing of Bailey.
Maybe a reporter of her calibre is best "in the field" not behind a mic in Montrose.

Good God no - Gemma O'Doherty is a headbanger, as a quick glance at her Twitter feed would tell you.

It's the most comprehensive report on the topic I've come across e.g more detailed than RTE or The Examiner.

No idea what Gemma sounds like or if suitable for radio but based on the above I'll be looking out for other reports.

SOR is still on his holliers. Fab contract there! He can be a grumpy git too. I am sorry but the hmming of MOC standing in is just painful to listen to, it's like she is pretending to be empathetic without any input from her side. Just me. OK.

    So next up is.....?

Won't make much difference really it's all shyte anyway.

Some people on here have a real problem with Gemma, probably because she wasn't a "champion of repeal". She's not exactly conventional, and some of her claims are fairly outlandish and unconvincing, however, a reasonable and intelligent person would not throw the baby out with the bath water. She has many well researched views on important topics barely covered by mainstream news outlets, certainly enough of which are thought provoking and likely valid views.

But no, she speaks to John Waters, asks questions about vaccines and flirts with the "alt-right".....ergo Gemma bad and absolutely everything she says is invalid.

My problem with Gemma is that she undoes her good work with bat**** craziness. So you end up not knowing what's genuine and what she has been reading in the tealeaves.

I see what you mean. Very provocative topics presented with not much attempt at balance - e.g. anti vaccine, an anti abortion livestream and her choice of re-tweets is very dubious.
She's really not a contender for RTE radio's premiere curent affairs programme.
Just waiting for the livestream to get to the topic of les gilets jeunes...

I've heard a couple of times that her twitter was hacked. Also presumably without wishing to cast any aspersions ; presumably she would be sober at 10 AM.

Also while I am not sympathetic to her apparent views on immigration (or at least the tone of those remarks) and am also in favour of the right to choose it might be useful to get someone more socially right wing on the radio to break the tedious socially soft left and economically hard right Montrose received opinions.

Socially soft left as long as the powerful are unaffected.

I agree that we need alternative views on Irish radio in general. Gemma is not the answer though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,331 ✭✭✭jeremyj1968

Pointless argument here. Ballagh is being disingenuous about "not naming" people when they are perfectly identifiable by their positions which he did name. And Hugh Lenihan is just being childish.

Put it this way,I had to shut down Meeeriam this morning with the third or fourth reference to the “Braxitt vaute “couldn’t take it any longer........ BANG!!

Can ‘Jammah’be any more annoying, does she speak thru her ‘nause’.

    Doubt it.
