Questions have to asked about how our 2nd football semi-final is only being played this weekend?? The county final is down for next weekend and Munster club the week after so if there is a draw in this weekend's semi-final between Courty and the Nire, we will have no representative in Munster again despite being our teams being out of both intercounty championships in June!

I know people will say Abbeyside got to the hurling final which is what delayed it but there were loads of weekends without games that would have had this championship finished weeks ago.

How many different ways can our county board prove they are a bunch of utter gob****es

It wouldnt matter if the co senior hurlers year finished in early January, they still wouldn’t finish the football championship on time.

    "@DermotKeyes on Twitter

Quite how #Waterford newspapers are meant to adequately cover @ballygunnerHc v Midleton (Walsh Park, 1.30pm), @CloneaGAA v Bruff/Garyspillane (Fraher Field, 1.30pm) and the likely @WaterfordGAA Senior Football Final at Fraher Field (3.30pm) on Sunday week escapes me."

According the Munster Council, both Munster hurling championship games on the same day in different Waterford venues as there may be extra-time in matches as they have to finish on the day (unless level after ET). Pity would have been a good double-header.
Munster Council also replied that the football final will be an evening match, possibly the Saturday or Sunday I suppose.

A pretty simple alternative to the potential football problem...play a few games in the summer. They had so many free weekends.

I'd normally defend them re scheduling to some degree as the inter county season is so unpredictable. But they had from mid June to play these games off. And we were one of few counties that actually played a couple of rounds of club games in April after the bad weather delayed the close of the league.

    This is indefensible.

4 club games 4 weeks on the spin was hardly ideal preparation for the county team either right bang before what was to be an attritional championship was hardly ideal!

Certainly wasn’t for any senior club players I know anyways!

Likes of jamie Barron must have played 8 games in 10 weeks!

The lads involved are so out of touch it’s frightening.

It’s kilrossanty I’d nearly feel worse for, got messed around last year & impossible to build any momentum this year either way it’s been structured!

There is no fixtures plan just play when your told the game is on!

    What alternatives do you need?

Both county teams have been out of their respective championships since beginning of July, just organise the damn fixtures so that all club competitions can be finished by October in time for the Munster club championships. And give players from both codes the respect they deserve. It’s not rocket science

There was a Ger Harris from Mount Sion who played with the county in the mid nineties, could be the same fella

Indeed it is, actually a Portlaw man originally. Joxer Burns was in charge of a good Waterford minor team a few years ago.

Roger Casey is the kit man

Doxer was in charge of the minors in 2012. They beat Clare up in Ennis in the first round but lost out easily to eventual All Ireland champions Tipperary in the Munster semi final.

he handled that particular job really poorly, don't really know what credentials he had to get that job in the first place ,its not as if he actually done anything with Ferrybank ,quiet the opposite, don't really know what he'd bring to the Waterford set up ,

Doxer is a sound man. An excellent coach and would be an asset to any team he is involved with. I'm sure if you ever talked to anyone from ferrybank they would have nowt but praise for doxer.
Instead you come on here with that ****e. Your becoming a broken record at this stage.

Get Harris was originally ballyduff lower then transfered to Portlaw then transfered to mount Sion and then back to ballyduff lower. Has been involved with ballyduff for a good few years now and was assistant manager last year out there I think.

Waterford probably had a better minor team in 2012 than the team that won the All-Ireland the following year, with Tadhg de Búrca, Shane McNulty, Kieran Bennett and Colin Dunford on board. They had a great win in the first round in Ennis. They had the upper hand in the first half against Tipperary in Thurles, but had a crazy game plan based entirely on getting the ball into Stephen Bennett at full forward. Players in good positions all over the place passed up straightforward scoring chances with the preoccupation with getting the ball into Bennett, which was easy to defend against. Waterford should have had a good lead at half time with the possession they had, but their heads went down instead and they were blown away after half time. I have to say that I thought after the game that whoever was in charge hadn't a clue. That was a seriously talented team which had a similar experience at under 21 level three years later when gross incompetence on the sideline cost them their first round game in Ennis and a probable All-Ireland title.

Ger Harris was centre back, and one of the best players, in the Waterford minor team that got to the All-Ireland final in 1992. He had a couple of years with the seniors, and lined out for them at centre forward against Limerick in the senior championship in 1994. However his lack of pace told against him. I'm not aware of him having any coaching experience, but he is a good lad with a total commitment to Waterford hurling.

We were destroyed on the night. Only for Seanie Barry in goal it would have been a cricket score

You should stay on the ditch hurler, if u know about hurling, decent people and what makes them tick us know Doxer Burns would be an asset to any team.

By ur comment ur saying he's dragging Ferrybank hurling backwards and being a disservice to them.

Doxer got Ferrybank to an eastern final two years ago and hasn't been over or involved with the team since and since he left they have done nothing at all

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 531 ✭✭✭Stopitwillya

Doxer was manager back then, now he is part of the backroom team. He won't be coming up game plans and I'm sure his brief is limited to the odd drill and helping our behind the scenes. Being a top coach this will suit him.
Doxer has given a large chunk of his life to ferrybank. Everyone over there have nowt but respect for him. By the end of the year I'm pretty sure the Waterford players will have the same respect. A top man.

Why is it any time a team from Waterford is leathered it's always the managers fault? Same team even has the same problem three years a part with two different management teams, still all the managers fault.

Its unreal, no matter who you are or what you're role is there's somebody thinks you're not up to it. Underage teams are notoriously unpredictable. At least with minor now, you get a couple of games with them but it's no basis to judge whether a fella is up to it with hindsight. These fellas mentioned are excellent now, but were they 6 years ago?

I think that fellas credentials are completely discounted on the basis of u21 hurling is even more ludicrous. It's literally all on the day in that grade, not akin to senior intercounty at all really.

On a personal level you will not meet a more genuine guy than Doxer Byrnes. A gentleman. I don’t see him involved in the frontline of the set up when it comes to the training/drills etc as that isn’t his role. I’ll ask the question though, has he any less experience than Eoin Murphy when he was brought in as a selector? Murphy had zero experience with any age group or any level of club team and yet was considered a great option for a selector. I wouldn’t worry about Doxer at all or Ger Harris in his role as team secretary they both will be more than adequate.

Was at the senior football semi-final, was a very enjoyable game and a good standard with a big crowd in. Probably fair to say that our football championship is better than the hurling in that there are more potential winners than the monopoly that Ballygunner have in the hurling.
Reckon Kilrossanty will bring a huge crowd and neutrals will travel next Sunday night to Fraher Field and it should be a great occasion under lights.
