I don't think it's innocuous, I just find it gas we went from 'being assessed for availability for the weekend' to 'death would be a very likely outcome of another similar injury until they're fully recovered'

    So, worst case scenario:

    Cronin, Scannell, Archer, Kleyn, Beirne, POM, Cloete, Stander;
Williams, Carbery, Sweetnam, Scannell, Goggin, Conway, Haley

Marshall, Kilcoyne, Parker, Holland, TOD, Stafford, JJH, Wootton

JJ is 26. Years to turn into what though? How much more do you wait?

    Only time will tell.
There is no huge difference between the two players at the moment that I can see.
In JJ's favour, he is a good bit younger than Keatley and he is from Munster.
I think it would be natural for Munster fans to want to see a young Munster-born player be given time to develop rather than give an older Leinster-born player a chance to finish out his career.
I believe if given regular game-time between 10 and 15 that JJ will develop into a steady backup to both positions.
We have enough cover at 12 at the moment with Scannell, Goggin and Arnold so I don't see a need for him to feature there.
I don't know what Munster should do with Tyler Bleyendaal, he has been injured for most of his time with Munster, perhaps it would be a risky investment to stick with him.
I'd rather they started Johnston in a few matches to see if he could cope with senior level.

JJ has been around for enough time to the point where I don't think he has a further ceiling to reach.

JJ being from Munstter shouldnt be a factor. I think there is plenty of difference between them at the moment and all lies in Keats favour.
JJ is 26. How much more time do you want to leave for development? If we talking about a prop/second row at 26 you may have more of a point but an outside back. JJ has to show more to get regular game time. That he cant even get regular game time then why should they keep him.
Johnson needs regular game time and to stay fit. If he does that consistently then go to pro14 but not yet.

    Psycho Killer - "Hands Away" (Prop-Prop-Prrrroppp-Prop, Prop-Prop-Prop-Prrrrrrop-Prop)
Team I'd like to see on the weekend

    15. Haley
    14. Sweetnam
    13. Goggin
    12. Scannell
    11. Whooton
    10. Carbery
    9. Cronin

    1. Cronin
    2. Scannell
    3. Ryan
    4. Klyne
    5. Bierne
    6. Botha
    7. Cloete
    8. Stander

    16. Marshall
    17. Killer
    18. Archer
    19. O'Shea
    20. PoM
    21. Williams
    22. Tyler
    23. Conway

Mostly first choice, but a bit of rotation and giving some needed experience/game time to one or two players.

Not taking a big risk by having keeping a few of the more experienced players on the bench rather then resting outright.

That wasn't a reference to Sammy Arnold. It was from my own experience. It was what a specialist told my son after a very similar injury. Which left him unable to breathe properly for three weeks.

I'll be honest PS. It's awful that your son went through that, but that's really jumping through hoops to make the connection. There isn't any detail as to what happened to Arnold and he may have just been monitored due to it being an area that could have repurcussions with an injury.

I replied to a post of Venjur's. It was specific to that post and particularly the second paragraph. Not sure why eceryone's taking it out of context. I thought it was pretty clear. I elaborated in reply to leakyboots who seemed to find it particularly funny for some strange reason.

Jesus what's with the preciousness!? The guy was hospitalised over night for observation, I said throat injuries can be tricky and prawnsambo shared a similar experience with a family member. No one is hoping Arnold is going to be the worst case, people are just pointing out it can be an awkward one to recover from if there is any level of damage to the throat.

In my case, he wasn't even hospitalised. Said he had difficulty breathing and voice was almost gone. Went to GP who reccommended a specialist at the Beacon and then a CT scan and then another specialist and then a third specialist and an endoscopy. By which time, he had recovered thank God.

It was an injury that was caused by something they are now trying to get out of the game. Tackled a guy who led with the forearm straight into his throat.

We can't afford to rest key players this week. It's absolutely vital that we win this game, and if we get a TBP, that would go a very long way towards securing our place in the knockouts.

JVG will play his strongest available team this week. Then we won't see most of our internationals play in red again until after the november internationals are over.

Would be highly surprised if theres that much rotation. Hopefully build a good lead and make early subs

JVG has no reason to rest players ahead of Ireland camp. Plenty rotation will be seen for the Glasgow game Saturday week

Bit of an odd one, and a kick in the teeth for Stafford. I'm happy with what I've seen of Cronin so far.

    John Hayes Ligind
Not sure if he's 2nd choice standard. I'd imagine the writing is on the wall for at least 2 of Cronin, Williams and Hart

Hart I would think hasn't worked out. They aren't hiding the fact that they clearly consider him A-standard. I'd imagine he will move by the end of the season, maybe back to France. Maybe to Leinster!

Williams will be 33 next year, might be weighing up his options and Hart clearly isn't working out.

Would like to see Cronin stay on.

Interesting move for McCarthy and I'll be intrigued to see how long the contract is for.

Hart is probably the odd one out unless he gets opportunities soon to prove his worth. The Exeter performance was a big one from Williams and I'd be happy enough to see him retained as third choice. I can see Cronin getting another year.

Based on his limited appearances I would have been delighted to retain Mathewson for another season but that's unlikely now.

So McCarthy would be 2nd then Williams 3rd? Yup Matthewson must be going back alright

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,096 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

Its too early to be making this McCarthy decision now, Munster need to decide which of their 10 or 12 halfbacks are crocked, crap or actually a prospect and do some weeding before Leinster are forced to part with any more assets.

There is such a drop off in age and experience below McCarthy at Leinster that, ironically, if he went it could leave Leinster threadbare during the world cup window and beyond while he ends up occupying the very same place in the pecking order at Munster behind Murray and any of Williams, Cronin or Hart.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 676 ✭✭✭turnikett1

Dont think anyone is "forcing" Leinster or McCarthy. Though I agree it's a bit of an odd call. Would be quite happy with a set up of Murray/Cronin/Stafford.

Thats Williams and Hart gone for sure? Will they still keep Matthewson?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,347 ✭✭✭Boscoirl

Mattewson is 50/50 for the bench on Sat.

Earls is back but N Scannell is 50/50

    And TOD to start

I guess McCarthy prefers being 2nd choice for Munster rather than 3rd choice for Leinster.

If true then I'd imagine next season three of Williams, Hart, Cronin or Matthewson will be gone.

I know it's the way contracts work but it always seem strange that this season has barely started and we are already looking at next season.
