    I know it's been said a hundred times, but I still can't get over the sheer pig-ignorance of not removing plates from bars once finished. It's an epidemic in my gym. These are people who no doubt pride themselves on their appearance and yet they don't even possess basic manners? Absolute morons. Congratulations, you can lift heavy. Unfortunately, you're also an ignorant muppet devoid of basic human decency.

    Neglecting to remove plates deems the equipment completely unusable for another person / other people who may not be strong enough to remove them, especially in the case of the heavier weights. It also takes time out of the other person's workout having to remove the last person's plates.

    It also pisses me off that the gym has the odd sheet of A4 paper, with "Please re rack weights" stuck on to a mirror in one or two places in the entire gym. That's the gym's entire attempt at fixing the issue. It's an insult, I'd rather the owners made zero attempt at all instead of this less than half-assed effort at fixing the issue.

    Saw the other day one of the staff telling a guy to put the plates he had just used back into the racks.
    Must be the first time I see staff doing anything about it

    In the gym this morning and the first sight that greeted me was a bar loaded up with 120kg left on the ground in front of the (only) rack. Obviously some wankstain was deadlifting the night before and didn't really feel it necessary to re-rack his weights.
    It's frustrating when people leave plates or dumbells on the ground and it's just as bad when they leave a bar loaded with plates on the squat rack or bench station but the absolute worst is leaving a loaded bar on the ground. It requires the most amount of time and effort to take apart and one could easily put their back out trying to slide 20kg plates off. Some who are smaller framed and not too strong may not even be capable of getting the plates off. A regular came along some time later to use the squat rack and had to strip the bar. She was clearly struggling to get the plates off and I jumped in to give her a hand.
    Would love to catch the arsehole who did it and give him a good boot up the hole. Absolute laziness of the highest order. Unfortunately, it's an all too common sight at my gym.


    Was benching at the BP station, looked down to my left at one point and noticed something bright green on the frame/leg of the station. On closer inspection it was a piece of chewing gum. What kind of disrespectful piece of sh!t would do that? There's a bin literally 2m away mad.png

    Practicing squats without any weights on the bar as I'm new to it and I wanted to get my form right before adding weights less I end up crippling myself. Lad walks by and says "works better when you out weights on it" and has a good laugh as he walks on.

    Thanks buddy. Does my confidence a load of good. Already nervous enough in front of people who've been doing weights for years before me.

    I don't even think he was doing it to be mean or nasty, probably just a joke to him. But I was just annoyed as it made me very self-conscious as I was now thinking "great, now everyone is looking at me and thinking the same thing".

    Insecurities on my part, but it still annoyed me no end. This was about 2/3 weeks ago!

    He was just being a massive dìckhead. Very few people don't start warming up with an empty bar. Ignore it.

    I was as self conscious as you are when I started going to the gym so I knew where you're coming from but genuinely he's just a diçkhead

    Don't worry about him, complete bellend.

    When squatting, I always warm up with an empty bar and then gradually load it, so it's absolutely normal in a gym and he was just being a prick.

    Only a moron would start squats with weights on the bar. First doing them vans deadlifts with weights on the bar is just asking for back issues.

    Besides, the bar weights 20kg alone.

    Sometimes you see the biggest guys in the gym doing stuff with a bar with no weight on or with 2kg dumbells in thier hands so would not worry.

    It doesn't differentiate between newbies and high level lifters who may start with 60/70kg.

    Nothing wrong with what Mellor said. He didn't suggest that a newbie or even an average gym goer shouldn't start with an empty bar.

    I'd always start with an empty bar. Even at my peak of bench pressing 140KG I'd always do 2 or 3 sets with a naked bar first especially if it was my first excercise of the day.

    It doesn't differentiate between newbies and high level lifters who may start with 60/70kg.

    Fair enough but what I meant was someone new to squats. Even though I'm not a newbie anymore, I always start with no weight on the bar to loosen my leg muscles. I would injure myself going straight into a working set of heavy weight.

    It sounds like he was probably just making a stupid joke, to be honest, rather than being nasty. We've all made stupid jokes with absolutely no malice intended and I'm sure we'd all hate to think that someone had taken our joke the wrong way, however unfunny it was. Let's give the lad the benefit of the doubt.

    I completely understand it making you feel self conscious though as I've been very self conscious in the gym in the past. But now I find it to be a generally welcoming and supportive environment, which is nice.

    There are alternative ways of warming up than empty bar squats. That are probably superior. A 50kg squatter and a 150kg squatter have vastly different capacities. 20kg is a arbitary load.

    I mentioned someone starting squats which at the time of writing, to me was an ok way to describe soemone who is new to squats.

    I never mentioned someone jumping into the heaviest squat. But even me jumping into 20kg squats would equal me not doing proper form or going deep enough. Which is in my view of things is why I and others should be warming up with an empty bar.

    Sure an empty bar is nothing for some lifters who can stack on weight after weight, we've all seen the huge guys do that but I was speaking relative to the guy who seemed like a newbie. I think you just took each word too seriously, I could have rephrased it if asked to elaborate.
