If the protest group are really serious about their campaign and have a half a brain between them, they must immediately see that the likes of Margaret Cash and her ilk have nothing to offer their cause. She is a fraud, plain and simple.
To allow her have a microphone and spout utter tripe is completely counter-productive for the protest.
Of course she is 'manna from heaven' for the media, particularly RTE news and suits their agenda perfectly.

Heard Boyd Barrett mention his constituency , FF and FG control the council and the provision of social housing is disgraceful.

Its not the overall number its numbers under a different scheme.

"Repair and Leasing Scheme was launched in 2017 to convert empty properties"

Its much easier throw out some fake numbers instead of facts.

“Almost one-third of families refusing social housing were homeless”

“Nearly one-third of families who turned down local authority social housing offers in Dublin last year were homeless”

Haha it’s gone beyond comedy at this stage.

This whole homelessness “crisis” is a farce and a scam.

The scheme was lauded as it was to deliver 3500 across the state. To-date it has delivered 15. If you have an issue you can take it up with the author of the article and the minister.

I read the article, a scheme mooted to deliver 3500 houses managed to deliver only15 since it's inception. All in the article.

The unfortunate thing in all of this is that there are some pretty simple and obvious steps to take to help the situation, but steps no FG government will ever take due to the impact it would have on their core voting base.

Other more left leaning parties while would likely introduce the measures, would go too far alienating key stakeholders in the economy. There is such a gaping hole in our political environment for a sensible, reasonable party that operate around the middle but use pragmatic decision making and can tackle issues head on.

Was listening to come commentary on this over the weekend and while I'd multiple issues with the guy speaking (Believe he is some political professor in UCD) he did make the point that there is a very clear and obvious landscape around the world at present. Where populations start to realise democracy isn't working for them, and the ability for governments to tackle issues is hamstrung by their re-election fears, people start to get radical and look into alternative methods of politics and governance.

Ireland is generally to safe, cautious and conservative for any radical shift in politics, but when citizens are able to see the solutions quicker than those we elect to govern is, that spells major problems.

    Yes, yes it is!

That article has f**k all to do with a house building scheme - I'm afraid anyone using that as an example to prove their "point" would be talking a lorry load of old bat poo.

I thought we all had a human right to housing?

And that everyone should have a minimum level of housing provided by the state?

    I want a free house

I didn't mention house building. The RL scheme is part of the provision of housing. I see though that pedantry is alive and well.

I know this is the bit that most want to latch onto to sully the protests.Have you no concern for those that are not interested in a free house but just want somewhere affordable to rent?

This whole homelessness “crisis” is a farce and a scam.

Was advocating that point earlier in the thread, and I tend to say it a bit.

Is it a homeless crisis, or is it a housing crisis, or affordability issue. They are too easily packed into the same heading by multiple different groups, and for me it cheapens one against the other.

So for example plenty of people use the homeless angle as their entry to debate or the conversation because its the extreme social and moral aspect, but it's their entry to move towards their actual grievance, not being able to afford a home in a location they want or are paying too high rent.

A valid and legitimate issue, but for some reason people don't feel confident stating that as their issue. I imagine it has something to do with the general vibe that's gone on far too long that actually opposition parties push harder narratives that are class based (lower vs higher) and for people to feel like they have support they nearly twist themselves into the lower class bracket.

When in fact there is an absolute cohort of what would be considered middle class proffesionals who have legitimate concerns and issues. But someone in that bracket maybe feels they wouldn't get proper support or traction.

Which is nonsense, as it's a major issue in Ireland. Third highest rent % in the world (the entire world) and a significant issue of foreign labour coming in through investment hoovering up property continuing this cycle of ridiculous rents.

As someone who works in the IT sector only know this too well.

But tackling this issue is probably not on the radar of most opposition parties, as its a hard sell. It's easier to go the extremes of poverty of the edge cases to get more traction

ILk. You might point out what is not fact in what I referenced in the Times article? The RL scheme was to deliver 3500 it has only delivered 15. Is this not fact according to the Times and by admission of the minister?

Latching on? Its one of the biggest bloody facts of these protests, and a point that their nominated speaker made numerous fecking times. So to call it latching on is a bit crap.

And that bolded bit, I can't see why you are putting words in my mouth, or even where you got them from because I absolfuckinglutely do, hence my highlighting the fact that people who don't need free housing, want free housing & get free housing because they stamp their feet and play the media despite never having contributed a red cent to the pot. They are the ones who are taking away the homes from the people who you know - actually need them..

Are you claiming everyone affected by the housing crisis wants a free home? Plenty of working people are affected by this crisis.

That's not putting words in your mouth. Do you understand what a question is? The rest of your reply is not even worth addressing.

Ahaa, can't respond to the indefensible stuff eh??

But anyway, to answer your question:

No, when did I say that? I do however think that Margaret Cash - spokeswoman for TBTC wants free houses for everyone - I can post links if you like.

I am a working person affected by it, forced to rent a room from my mam because I'm a few bob over the threshold for social housing, and I cant afford rent my own place while I scrimp together whats left of my income for a mortgage deposit. I mean I could go and declare myself homeless, but - I'm not, and I don't feel the need to play the system.

I would be of the opinion that we absolutely and immediately need to introduce better rent controls, but what I don't want is: free houses for everyone, because you know - they aren't actually free.

And I particularly don't want free houses for people who aren't arsed work. Because fcuk those people, and I mean that.

Ms Cash is currently the gift that keeps on giving.

However,in order to do this, she has to be effectively managed, and her backing group are playing a blinder here.

The Irish print-media,in particular, deserve a commendation for the speed and totality of their abandonment of basic journalistic principles in relation to how they cover the issue.

Very basic issues fundemental to Journalism have been flung onto the funeral pyre of truth.

Today, yet again, the Irish Independent,or at least some of it's Staff (They cannot ALL be devoid of competence......can they ?) embark on the same ould crusade, once again wheeling out Ms Cash to offer a pithy quote...

The main focus of the article, the living arrangements of an American couple in Co Clare,is quickly dispensed with,to allow for the required interlude of Ms Cash's wise words...

    https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/well-lose-our-home-over-50pc-rent-rise-it-should-be-illegal-retired-couples-fears-over-soaring-rents-37346957.html
Mother of seven Margaret Cash, who made headlines when it was revealed that her children slept at a Garda station in Tallaght overnight, talked about the homelessness she saw on her commute to the Garden, saying “nobody cares.”

“Nobody cares, nobody even stops to ask why these people are there,” she said.

“You walk through Dublin City, and nearly every second or third doorway is full of homeless people. They’re not all on drugs and they’re not all alcoholics. But even so, the ones that are, do they not deserve our help? A hand up? Do they not deserve somewhere to go?

“Everyone makes mistakes, but do they not deserve somewhere to go where they can reflect and say - what have I done with my life?” Ms Cash said.

“Eoghan Murphy needs to resign!!!” she called to a crowd of cheers, referring to the Housing Minister.

    Well spoken Margaret.

However,in your quest to give these folk a "hand-up",I'm assuming you will be in the vanguard of those willing to sacrifice a portion of your own income to offer this ?

It is compulsory for me do this "hand up"gig every week, and I have done for the past 41 years, continuously, as a full rate PAYE and PRSI contributor.

I have paid every income levy imaginable, property tax, rates and all without being asked,or complaining,as yes,I do believe in the State having a duty to support those in need,as it has,and continues to support You.

Yet,Margaret Cash, and her supporters continue to push for their Nirvana....
“There are people all over Dublin living in deplorable conditions. I have a family member and there are eight of them living in a two bedroom squalid house owned by Dublin City Council. Him and his partner have been sleeping on a mattress for the last five years. They’re forgotten people,” she said.

“My sister is homeless as well,” Ms Smith said. “My other sister is in a BnB in Clondalkin with a baby.

“All my little niece wants is a back garden with a trampoline to celebrate her birthday and bring her friends. She’s now six years old and hasn’t had that. So that’s heartbreaking for the children.”

Failing to point out,of course, that the Trampoline Space is a prerequestite for ALL of those they classify as the "forgotten people" (in the single quoted case,it's now THREE individual "homeless" claims in the one Family)

It brings us right back to the Private Property Ownership debate....when the Local Authorities provide communal areas, with playground equipment to world-class standard, these are soon laid awaste to,burnt out, physically ripped from the ground, all within a very short time frame,so the preferred answer appears to be a Play Area in EVERY Publicly Provided residence, with the shoebox sized multi stories being reserved for the Private Purchasers....sounds a good plan for sure ?

Now,where do I make my increased contribution ?

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.
