I don't understand why you've posted that as a response to my post. It isn't a riposte in any way.

You said: "When they win it's great but when they lose it's because they're black"

How is that true of Lewis Hamilton?

'There is barely any diversity in Formula One. Still nothing's changed in 11 years I've been here. Kids, people, there are so many jobs in this sport in which anybody, no matter their ethnicity or background, can make it and fit in. #diversity #ucandoit.'

Entirely accurate and uncontroversial. Why would you have a problem with him saying that?

I’d say from that performance a lot of ppl will lose all respect for her.

They’ll be wondering was she cheating all these years?

Given that the line between cheat and non-cheat is whether or not the substance you use is banned rather than use of substances.....

She's like lewis hamilton in F1 and any of the many black american football players.

Or god forgive, black and female.

She's had a hissy fit, you think she'd show some maturity and come out and admit as such. What sort of a crap example is this setting for her child.

Where in her outburst did she mention anything to do with her race?

She's a woman, physically strong, successful, feminist, opinionated and black.

    A veritable broflake nightmare.

Absolutely. But in this case, she was bang out of order.

She was right in both her words and actions.

I think the coaching thing was harsh but Serena demanding an apology was completely over-the-top. Tennis players always seem to have their melt-downs and break their tennis bats when the match is slipping away from them.

I feel sorry for the Japanese player who considers Serena one of her heroes, I believe.

It seems that the broflakes are way less tolerant of bad behaviour when it's from a black woman.

The bias in this thread is shocking, like all the minimum wage plebs would know even the slightest thing about pressure and success.

Her words and actions were a dignified response to an egregious affront she was dealt.

Do you think she should take the umpire and the WTA to court over this affront?

Shes badly behaved. A bloody diva. Not all that talented.

Im very disappointed in her as she's normally a good loser but she lost the plot and ruined the winners very special day but how can the greatest female tennis player ever not be talented?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 339 ✭✭frankythefish

I like Serena, but she s a role model to many and her conduct was poor. Like it or lump it the umpire went by the rules and on each of the 3 occasions he was right

Did you watch the two videos posted? In the second one, she threatened to kill the female official. Female official complained to the female umpire, Williams denied the threat and the crowd backed up the official.

It’s not about sexism, or racism, it’s about her breaking the rules and trying to squirm out of it any way she can.

She should be banned, any player that pulls that crap should be banned.

I think this was an example of 1. her inability to lose with grace and 2. the celebrity going to her head. She apparently thinks that every single move she makes is WOMEN'S RIGHTS and she's also had a year of the media blowing hot air up her ass, turning her into some sort of god-like superhero figure just because she's black and female, much like they did with Beyonce.

She had a baby and is back on the Grand Slam circuit YAY FOR WOMEN'S RIGHTS! She nearly died and is still making Grand Slam finals YAY FOR WOMEN'S RIGHTS! She's challenging tennis tradition with her court attire YAY FOR WOMEN'S RIGHTS!

I've no doubt she's faced discrimination and sexism and racism over the course of her career, but she's now standing to cheapen and totally discredit her reputation as some kind of rock star feminist by pulling the sexism card as a way of justifying some seriously appalling, self-centred and bratty behaviour.

I feel so sorry for Osaka, only 20 years old and having the joy and victory of her first Grand Slam title torn away from her by her own hero who couldn't get over herself and accept that she wasn't the better player on the day. Never meet your heroes I guess.

I am gobsmacked there are people on this thread who think her behaviour was anything other than the above.

She is professional athlete, and who says she has to a role model for anyone. She acted like she should have in this situation.

The osaka girl pulled her visor over her face upon winning it was like here, I’ll be embarrassed for you then

The match officials acted like they should have, and the tennis authorities have also done the right thing by fining her.

Yeah, she lost it and behaved badly, like so many other great sportspeople have done in the past. People seem a lot more heated about it than they would be if she was a white man. That's just my opinion though. No doubt I'll be told why I'm wrong.

Yeh. $17k lighter today. That'll learn her. Regrets it now I would say.

Small price to pay for her dignified response to reprehensible treatment.

She still didn't get an apology from the umpire. He is hardly likely to issue one now, since the fine confirms he was in the right.

How did a black woman become so wealthy in our white patriarchal society?!

Some shameful posting in this thread, even for AH standards.

Glad most the pros and experts seem to see sense in this at least, and don’t want to crucify her like the rest of the rabid frenzy.

Serena didn't back down and carried herself with class.

Did you post any of your opinions in the Tennis forum?
