Serena's meltdown

Being an admirer of what she has done on court and proving that mothers can be excellent athletes after giving birth, a different side of Serena Williams may have been exposed in her outburst at the US Open yesterday.

But here's the deal after watching a number of reports of the incident, I am amazed by the amount of people rushing to support her. Experts in tennis validated the sanctions imposed by the umpire; yet still she publicly called him a liar and a cheat, and said that she was "here fighting for womens rights" and the umpire sanctioned her because she was a woman. She said if a man was on court, it would not have happened. So the umpire, according to Serena, was a sexist, liar, and cheat. And she said all of this on the court in front of a massive crowd and on live TV.

Speaking to the media after the event, she said it was "sexist" of the umpire to take a game away from her. "But I'm going to continue to fight for women.", she said. Some of her supporters have accused the umpire of being racist and that he was on a misogynistic power trip. Get a grip, it was a tennis game; not a human rights march.

You can go online to see her outbursts yesterday, but I find it mind boggling that so much these days is attributed to sexism/racism/whateverism when things don't go their way.

Meanwhile, Naomi Osaka, who became the first Japanese player to win a major singles final, was left in tears as a result of the incident.

I think the coaching thing was harsh but Serena demanding an apology was completely over-the-top. Tennis players always seem to have their melt-downs and break their tennis bats when the match is slipping away from them.

I feel sorry for the Japanese player who considers Serena one of her heroes, I believe.

The bias in this thread is shocking, like all the minimum wage plebs would know even the slightest thing about pressure and success.

Her words and actions were a dignified response to an egregious affront she was dealt.

I like Serena, but she s a role model to many and her conduct was poor. Like it or lump it the umpire went by the rules and on each of the 3 occasions he was right

Did you watch the two videos posted? In the second one, she threatened to kill the female official. Female official complained to the female umpire, Williams denied the threat and the crowd backed up the official.

It’s not about sexism, or racism, it’s about her breaking the rules and trying to squirm out of it any way she can.

She should be banned, any player that pulls that crap should be banned.

I think this was an example of 1. her inability to lose with grace and 2. the celebrity going to her head. She apparently thinks that every single move she makes is WOMEN'S RIGHTS and she's also had a year of the media blowing hot air up her ass, turning her into some sort of god-like superhero figure just because she's black and female, much like they did with Beyonce.

She had a baby and is back on the Grand Slam circuit YAY FOR WOMEN'S RIGHTS! She nearly died and is still making Grand Slam finals YAY FOR WOMEN'S RIGHTS! She's challenging tennis tradition with her court attire YAY FOR WOMEN'S RIGHTS!

I've no doubt she's faced discrimination and sexism and racism over the course of her career, but she's now standing to cheapen and totally discredit her reputation as some kind of rock star feminist by pulling the sexism card as a way of justifying some seriously appalling, self-centred and bratty behaviour.

I feel so sorry for Osaka, only 20 years old and having the joy and victory of her first Grand Slam title torn away from her by her own hero who couldn't get over herself and accept that she wasn't the better player on the day. Never meet your heroes I guess.

She is professional athlete, and who says she has to a role model for anyone. She acted like she should have in this situation.

Yeah, she lost it and behaved badly, like so many other great sportspeople have done in the past. People seem a lot more heated about it than they would be if she was a white man. That's just my opinion though. No doubt I'll be told why I'm wrong.
