I feel sorry for her husband. I wouldn't be able to look at my wife if she behaved that way.. Like it could end a relationship if I thought my wife was a piece of shlt.

Seems pretty simple to me. She’s right. Men have said far worse and gotten away with it.

Did she see the coaching? Only she knows.

A game penalty seems insane. In a final. Of a grand slam.

    Stupid umpire.

    1. Men may have said worse but that doesn't take away from what Serena said and did.
    2. As pointed out by another poster the fact she may not have seen it isn't the point. It seems the rule is against the intent.
    3. Why should it matter what game and what tournament it was in ? The rules are there for a reason. A game penalty was for three violations of the rules.

Coaching is not allowed regardless of whether she see's it or not.

She continued arguing over and over with the umpire, most players have a pop at them and then shut up and get on with it, she kept on going back at the umpire when she should have let it go.

If this is a men don't get punished women do scenario that she is portraying how come no other women were deducted a game in this tournament?

Basically, then, this post equates to ............ I don't know really what happened but sure I'll hop in on the thread, go against the common (and correct) consensus on her behaviour/the umpire decision and settle down for a "debate"

    Not like you JP81 !

I’m 100% aware of what happened, watched it happen, Love tennis and even play it.

Wtf are you sh!teing on about?! Do I know you?

Ridiculous reffing. The “coaching” happens all the time and goes unpunished. The heated arguments happen all the time and go unpunished.

He punishes both, in a grand slam final. Obscene.

Can i just but in here and remind y'all she is one of the greatest sports stars that has ever existed.

    Just sayin.

Neymar is one of the best players of all time. He got roundly criticisd for diving and playacting at the world cup.

Having outstanding talent should not give you the permission to behave like a brat.

Ok so was when she used the same arguement in 2009 simple as well.

She is not fit to be USO champion.

What has this to do with sex or race. I heard Serena Williams on the radio talking about sexism.

    Why?
    That's just ridiculous.
And the RTE radio 1 that I'm listening to now not questioning it.

I'll concede I confused you with another poster.

But the rest, is nonsense assessment of hat happened.

Yes you can, but it is an utterly pointless post, given the context of the thread,

No.. no its not. If she believes that an injustice was carried out that she should be listened to. The amount of sexism and racism in this thread sickens me to my stomach. Im old enough to remember John McEnroe and how he was lauded for throwing temper tantrums

    1. True, but the game as a whole need to act on this and make the rules more specific.
    2. Again it happens all the time and there is a certain grey area here.
    3. It matters hugely. What a place to finally instill some of the vaguest and rarely instilled rules in the game. Grandstanding by the umpire.

Using multiquote Please point out the posts where racism and sexism has been displayed on this thread.

I'll check back in an hour to see your findings.

McEnroe's first names are John Patrick, you just might be debating with the great man.

Because men get away with more abuse in every single tournament.

    Damn straight it was sexism.

The rules are specific, no coaching and Patrick Moratoglu admitted he was coaching Williams during the match so she has zero defence here.

They don't get away with constantly abusing the umpire during a match and calling them a thief.

Serena lost the match mentally more than physically.

With her experience, she should have known in which direction things were going and smashing the racket is totally avoidable if you can control your feelings. Same thing for insulting the ref. Easier said than done of course, but she is a champion and this is what is expected from champions.

She did well in the post match interview though not to bring it up. It would have made her look bad and unfair towards Osaka

They don’t get accused of coaching in a final when it was very very questionable if she even saw the HAND SIGNALS!!

A point violation for your coach shaking his hand at you from the crowd. Ridic

Whether she believes it or not is irrellevant and has no correlation to her talent. In fact, being so talented and experienced, she should have the cop on to know how her reaction would be received both by the umpire and general public and, indeed, the lack of dignity and respect to Osaka.

She has a card of victim hood and she knows well when to pull it out. Strangely enough, mainly when she isn't winning.

She didn't get a point violation for the coaching incident she got a warning for it.

she got the point violation for smashing her racket which was a second offence and very black and white.

a quick Google taken from Wikipedia

"The year did not end without controversy. While playing and winning the tournament in Stockholm, McEnroe had an on-court outburst that soon became notorious. After questioning a call made by the chair umpire, McEnroe demanded, "Answer my question! The question, jerk!" McEnroe then slammed his racquet into a juice cart beside the court in anger, and the stadium crowd booed him. He was suspended for 3 weeks (21 days) for exceeding a $7,500 limit on fines that had been created because of his behavior"

so you are saying Mac's outbursts where never sanctioned?

McEnroe was hated in his hay day, so your memory is poor at best. As time progressed, and his career ended people looked back in more of a lighter view of it.

The same will happen with Nick Kyrios. He'll have lots of YouTube highlights, people will look back and laugh but forget that he was a massive bellend.

Anyway, just had to add a voice of support to her side of the argument in this thread.

It’s pretty toxic and many of the experts have likely never even watched a single game of tennis.

Most of the pros and former players seem to be on her side at least.

    Such a shame for Osaka.

I don’t hold any I’ll feeling toward Serena for passionately defending her integrity out there. Maybe the manner of her argument could have been better, but in the heat of the moment I think it was understandable.

As Sue Barker quite rightly said, the loser here is tennis.

The rules need clarifying, especially the ridic “coaching” one.

That umpire picked a helluva moment to make a stand.

Errr no I never said anything of the sort. You may be quoting the wrong person there...

She should be blaming her coach, they're both aware of the rules and the consequences of breaking them.
