This is the transformer I use. I ordered it from Amazon. I use it with the existing bell which is something like this.

:D that's exactly the bell we have already... It's the screw in the centre of the bell that gives enormous grief.

    Thanks for the transformer link

Yes the bell takes a bit of a set up. You can rotate the black piece as the screw hole may not be in the centre.

Also there is a setting in the nest that limits the amount of time the bell rings for. You could remove the bell altogether and just power the nest from the transformer. i.e. you would connect the two wires connected to the bell to one terminal. You could then use a google home to announce when the bell is pressed.

So I've a question. I can see that many people on the thread are using 24V transformers. Is this voltage ok for the chimes? For example, Nest customer support say (see the topic about list-of-compatible-chimes-that-are-available-in-the-uk on nest customer support) that the Friedland D107 is suitable at 16V. Would 24V not damage this chime?

It needs 16-24v based on the support article 'How to tell if your current doorbell’s wires will work with Nest Hello'
    Nest wrote:
Nest Hello needs to be powered by wires delivering 16- 24 VAC, and at least 10 VA.

Most here I guess just decided to go for 24v as opposed to 16v to ensure its getting the juice needed, but 16v should work also.

Thanks for the reply slayerking, but I really meant would the 24V transformer be ok for a 16V doorbell chime (not the nest Hello itself)?

My current chime is fine but is fed by an 8V transformer. There are no markings that I can see anywhere on it (I've taken it off the wall) so I'm not sure if 16V or 24V would be compatible with it or not.

My chime is onky 12 volt rated or something but working fine with 24v transformer

Ah I see. My chime is rated 12v (I think, it might even be 8v) and seems fine on the 24v. No issues yet.

OK thanks. Maybe I'll just get the 24V transformer for now and see what happens to my chime. If it dies I'll replace it with one with a higher voltage rating.

Now to choose a transformer to replace my 8V one in my circuit board...I guess the BREVE TUFVASSONS PSS10/230/24V one from tme should work based on other people's experiences. It's also cheaper than the PSS10/230/24V Transformer one on amazon :)

i had the 8v chime ( manual job with a spring and actuator ), feeding it 24 v and its working fine ;)

I recently got a new composite door installed, I don't have a doorbell or a chime, how exactly would this doorbell be installed?

I’m just wondering if any of you who have the Nest Doorbell notice any skipped/dropped frames when playing back video? Also, when you are in live view/answering the doorbell are there any skipped frames/image freezes?

I had an incident last night and the IR really blew out the thiefs face. I wasnt impressed. He is not clearly identifiable. I have a spare indoor nest cam so going to try it outside with one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B018RRVA2E/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Will put up some sensor lights too.

    skipped dropped frames do happen.

I read into it. no matter what quality you set, it can only upload with available bandwith. So you cant guarantee quality.

You're saying it like that's a problem with the nest!! You are always relying on your broadbands bandwidth, there's nothing nest or anything can do about that. Same for any cam or any device that uploads data.

Unless Nest start to do local storage, that's a given.

I guess I'd rather have had some sort of bandwidth warning or control over the output. I understand local storage would eliminate this issue. Less of a frame rate but decent quality would have been better than a blur.

Looks like I'll need to drill through about 1 foot of brick to install a wire for this.

I've been wondering about this myself. For these sort of doorbell cameras and other outdoor cameras, is IR best or would they do better in daytime mode and combined with an old fashioned motion activated flood light?

Which gives a better picture quality?

I also wonder if a floodlight is more of a deterrent. A lot of home security is about making your security obvious and drawing attention to burglars.

I do not use the IR, however I have the benefit of a street light and a motion sensor light.

You can also buy stand alone infra red lights as well which might work better.

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/KKmoon-Illuminator-Security-Illuminators-Waterproof/dp/B01M10RZ98/

    As an example.

Let us know how it goes. I think it is an important point that doesn't seem to have been looked into much. Cheers

Just to be sure, this is my transformer...it's a 12V and needs to be changed....correct?

Spec says needs at least 16v. I think some ran on lower and had issues with it dropping off the WiFi

Thanks a mil, best change the transformer so to be on the safe side and better get an electrician to be on the even safer side!

Picked up a Garo 8 - 24V tranformer for my fuse box for €10 in the local electrical wholesaler this morning. No need to use Amazon lads.

Well all working fine, on another note I see Ring offer free replacements if stolen. I don’t see anything for Nest, anyone know what their policy is?
